Bewilderment | Richard Powers

so-so

There is an earnest quality to Powers‘ novels that irritates me. I agree with his message of conservation but have trouble with the medium. Single dad Theo is raising a 9 yr old son who has behavioral problems. Animal rights lawyer wife/mom died 2 years earlier. A cutting-edge neural feedback experiment may promise not only a cure for Robin but also bring his wife back to life (sorta). Meanwhile, 🌏 goes from bad to worse. #ToB22Longlist #20in4

Ruthiella @BarbaraBB This one was much shorter than The Overstory, thankfully! I did like the interludes where the dad “discovered” new planets for his son. 3y

Civilizations: roman | Laurent Binet

Read for #ToB22LongList . Between a pick and a so-so. I LOVED Binet‘s HHhH but while this had a similar playful style, I thought the alternative history was a little dull. The book is a thought experiment: what if instead of Europe invading the Americas in the 16th century, the Incas invaded Europe? I probably would have gotten more from it were I better acquainted with world history. As it was, I did a lot of googling.

Ruthiella @Tamra It really is. There another alternate history novel I read a few years ago now with a similar premise, only instead of an Incan invasion, it posits what would the world look like if 99% of Europe had been decimated by the plague instead of 30%

squirrelbrain I didn‘t love The Seventh Function ( a bit too clever-clever for me) and I haven‘t read HhhH, so this one isn‘t high up on my list. I‘m definitely waiting to see if it makes the shortlist. Great review though! @Megabooks @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen 3y

The Echo Wife | Sarah Gailey

Hell yeah!! I REALLY enjoyed this twisty tale. Evelyn Caldwell is a geneticist who is hyper focused on her career, her husband Nathan wishes he could tweak her just a tiny bit. Parts Frankenstein/ parts Stepford Wives this book about AI cloning was a zillion times better than Klara & the Sun. Im so glad I discovered this gem on the #ToB22LongList I thought the audio narration was deadpan perfect for Evelyn‘s sterile personality. #Hoopla 🙌🏻🎧🧡
