Waiting for Tom Hanks | Kerry Winfrey

@megnews is hosting the #RoadTripUSA2022 challenge, trying to visit each state (via book, of course!) this year. Love the idea of these #TravelTuesdays !!

I'm a lifetime Buckeye & think Ohio's big must-not-miss definitely has to be the Hocking Hills region. I'm rather passionately fond of my state & get a little defensive when people blow it off as “just“ corn, when, first off, corn is awesome 😂

I was delighted to realize the tagged book is ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) set in German Village, including scenes in the famous Book Loft bookstore!! My other favorite Ohio reads are probably the Kate Burkholder mysteries by Linda Castillo. Set in Ohio's Amish country, Castillo does a great job realistically portraying the Amish community and the ways they are the different and the same as their English neighbors. We have an Amish population in my neighborhood as well and while they obviously choose to live ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) differently, they are just as human as the rest of us.

Can't wait to see what other Ohio reads any of you have to share, and I'm intrigued to see where #TravelTuesdays take us next!!!

megnews I love The Book Loft! So many great places to visit in Columbus! I also love the Toledo area. I haven‘t made it to Hocking Hills yet but definitely on my list! 2y

JamieArc I love Hocking Hills, so in that vein, the tagged book is a great non-fiction read that ends there: (edited) 2y
Bookwormjillk People who make fun of Ohio are boring and don‘t know how to discover possibilities. 2y
StaceGhost My cousins live out there and my best friend went to OSU in Columbus— Ohio is gorgeous! 2y
megnews @JamieArc @Bookwormjillk @StaceGhost it‘s great to see all the shout outs to “discovering possibilities” in Ohio. I didn‘t realize Grandma Gatewood‘s Walk ends in Ohio. It‘s been on my tbr forever. 2y
JamieArc @megnews it‘s been a while since I‘ve read it, so the walk to Old Man‘s Cave may have been separate from her Appalachian Trail walk, but the book still ends talking about Hocking Hills. I remember that because it was an unexpected surprise - it‘s a place I love. 2y
Amandajoy My husband is on a business trip in Dayton. He spent the morning lost. He‘s not a fan of Ohio. 😂 2y
Lauram Ohio corn and Amish fry pies are amazing! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @megnews @JamieArc - Granny Gatewood is from Ohio & a section of the Buckeye Trail that goes through Old Man's Cave is named for her. I have that book on my shelf but still haven't gotten around to reading it!! I've heard good things about it, though. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - I think it's beautiful here and love it so hard haha I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea, but still! Recently I read a book where the MC had moved to NYC from Ohio and literally spent the entire book whining about how horrible/life-ending it would be if she had to move back there, and it REALLY annoyed me lol 2y
TheAromaofBooks @StaceGhost @Lauram - It's so happy here!!! And Amish fry pies - total win!! 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Amandajoy - I have similar feelings about New Jersey, so it's probably fair LOL 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I bought Waiting for Tom Hanks at The Book Loft the last time I visited and didn't know at the time there's a scene set there.😂 I'm selling for our downtown hotel and will be visiting soonish. I like Columbus. Maybe I'll venture further out on a future trip. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick - it's only about an 1.5hrs from Columbus to Old Man's Cave, so if the weather is decent, I definitely recommend it as a worthwhile adventure!! There are several other connected parks in the region as well. The om Hanks book, the MC says something at some point about it being a great place to commit murder because you could hide the body & no one would find it for days, and I was losing it because... true! 😂 2y

wanderinglynn What a neat idea! 2y
ravenlee I recommend the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson (a plane my dad flew is on display there, though you can‘t go inside to see what used to be a flying museum) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. And the Cleveland Orchestra is world-class. 2y

megnews @ravenlee so cool about your dads plane! I think the rock n roll museum is the only Cleveland museum I haven‘t visited. Never been to the orchestra but I love playhouse square. When I first started reading Lemoncello I didn‘t realize it was set in Ohio. That made even cooler than it already is. (edited) 2y
ravenlee I visited the R&R HoF a few times over the years I lived there and found a very different experience each time. And I loved the art museum, too. I wish I‘d done more in Cleveland proper while I was there (college in Berea) but I didn‘t drive. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Roary47 Well, I‘m not sure about books. My family (Dads Side) came from Ohio. My grandparents moved South because of work. My grandpa‘s photography business didn‘t pan out. They were from New Philadelphia. The school my grandma went to still has the same steps (Last time I checked) when she went to school there in the 1920s. (edited) 2y
megnews @ravenlee the art museum is such a great place and free! We used to go there several times a year when the kids were young. 2y
megnews @Roary47 my family went the opposite way for the same reason. My grandpa‘s dad came up here from North Carolina to work in the early 20s. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The Book Loft in Columbus is a large independent bookstore and its newest the German Village which is a super cute neighborhood for a stroll. 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I haven‘t been and I couldn‘t think of any without a sneaky google… I‘m pleased to report that I have read some (all in the same series) set in Cincinnati, Ohio 😜 2y
megnews @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The Book Loft came up on @TheAromaofBooks post. Everyone loves it! 😊 2y
megnews @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘ve never heard of that series. Checking it out. Thanks for sharing! 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @megnews, I think this challenge will be very educational for me - I‘m very geographically challenged - I disregard places when I read because usually I don‘t know them or haven‘t heard of them 😅😂 (I‘m lucky to exist in the time of google maps or I would spend much more of my time lost) 2y
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - The Airforce Museum is one of our favorite long-day destinations. So many interesting things to see there, and they frequently have visiting exhibits that are cool, too. Love it!! 2y
ravenlee @TheAromaofBooks I haven‘t been in almost eight years, the last time I was in Ohio. But my parents visited then, too, and we all went to the AF Museum together. I got to show kiddo her grampa‘s plane (she was about 8 months at the time and wasn‘t terribly impressed). But if you see the Hanoi Taxi there, that‘s the one. My dad was one of the pilots on that first POW pickup. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - That is such a cool piece of family history!!! 2y
sblbooks Hi, Can you tag me I'm going to try to join in some. I enjoyed Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper. I want to read this book that also has a North Carolina connection. 2y
megnews @sblbooks will do!! 2y

"That's the thing about books, they let you travel without moving your feet."?
Pamuk is the best person to take you around Istanbul. ???
The cover shows a snowy day in Istanbul, and I'm melting in scorching heat. ?
