Bailedbailed

Even though I was really excited to start this in September, mentally I think I started it at the wrong time. And instead of forcing myself to finish it and not enjoy it as much, I‘ve decided I‘ll hold off. Hopefully I‘ll be able to pick this up again later in the year when I‘ll be able to enjoy it more.

Bailedbailed

🎧Maybe this reads better in print? I bailed on this audiobook after an hour in (it's a little over 5 hours of listening).

Why? The author is trying to be funny as she pokes fun of her patrons, gripes about aspects of her job, and jabs at various books. I think the narrator makes the message she is writing about sound worse than it is. I will definitely try this in print because I still love the idea of this book. 📖

ReadingEnvy The second half, with all the lists, was my favorite part. But I read the whole thing as a skin, so audio might be a challenge. 7y
Izai.Amorim In my opinion it‘s different if you listen to something that was supposed to be read. Similar to reading a theater play you‘re supposed to see. A story supposed to be listened to should be written slightly differently. The voice introduces an extra layer of information. But maybe I‘m only old fashioned. (I‘ve never listened to an audio book) 7y
wanderlustforwords That bad huh? I just ditched Dracula! I've tried to read it in the past and thought it might be different this time, but the blathering, the endless blathering! I wanted to pull my hair out! 7y

Jess_Read_This @ReadingEnvy I'm pretty sure if I get a print copy, it will be much better! I keep seeing positive reviews and I think the narrator ruined it. 7y
Jess_Read_This @Izai.Amorim You make an excellent point. I've found the right narrator paired with the right book can introduce so many extra layers to the story. My last experience like that was The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury. But without that perfect pairing; it sure falls flat and would have been better read. 7y
Jess_Read_This @wanderlustforwords Oh no! I've wanted to read Dracula too. Have you read Frankenstein? 7y
readinginthedark @wanderlustforwords Which version did you listen to? I'm listening to the Audible one with a full cast and am enjoying it so far. 7y
readinginthedark @Izai.Amorim I think fantasy books lend themselves really well to the audiobook medium, maybe because of what you're saying. The fantastical element makes it like listening to fairy tales. But I love audiobooks in general. There are some narrators that could probably read anything and I'd listen to it...like my mom! 😊 7y
Izai.Amorim @readinginthedark @Jess_Read_This My problem is that I can‘t concentrate for a very long time when listening to stories, my mind starts to wander, and then I‘m gone. I‘m enjoying MAAN very much. How about Hamlet afterwards? 7y
Jess_Read_This @Izai.Amorim @readinginthedark 🙌🏼Yes to Hamlet! I'd love to dive into that one next. On audiobooks, I never thought I'd enjoy them until my commute became 45min-1 hour and then I became a fan! Radio gets on my nerves so I thought I'd switch to audiobooks. But the narrator has to be a good one or my mind is wandering. 7y
readinginthedark @Izai.Amorim My mind does wander sometimes, I'll admit. I generally just backtrack to wherever I was, but like @Jess_Read_This said, driving back and forth to work is what sold me on them! Hamlet would be good! Someone else suggested a historical one, so I'm thinking we'll definitely do a drama...and maybe take a vote in a couple of weeks? Or just do one regular and then one historical? 7y
britt_brooke Finally, after scrolling through tons of “picks,” I found your review! 😉 I just finished the print version and thought it was pretty meh. I just didn‘t find it that funny. 7y
Jess_Read_This @britt_brooke I‘m so glad we found each other in our mutual meh on this book! I had a stronger dislike review written; but once my minority opinion became obvious... I toned it down. 😂 I didn‘t find it funny or charming at all. 7y
britt_brooke @Jess_Read_This 😆 Yeah, I try to be careful with my unpopular opinion reviews. With this one, I liked the idea, but not the execution. She was trying way too hard to be funny which really just made it seem like she didn‘t care. 7y
Jess_Read_This @britt_brooke You summed it up perfectly. I liked the idea too. But the try hardness at being funny and her sarcasm at times just made it less impactful and enjoyable. 7y
