Mehso-so

Has anyone else read this book??? The magic system is very interesting but also not the most in depth description on how it really works… I think the story is really original and a very cool premise. HOWEVER. It took me over a month to read this 300 page book. Which I can generally finish in a couple of days and now that I have finished it I still feel so meh about it…

Fantasyfan I just had this deliver today. I realized I have owned the entire rest of the series except this one book for years. 2w
BookmarkTavern I love this whole series! 💖 And yeah, I don‘t remember the magic system ever really getting an in depth explanation. If you like audiobooks, I highly recommend the first three in this series. Tim Curry reads them. 💖 2w
451Degrees @Fantasyfan oh man I hope it works better for you! I just felt like I never clicked with the book the whole time 😩 2w

451Degrees @BookmarkTavern I might try them there… I feel like I should really love this book and potentially the rest of the series! Idk what has happened! 2w
Fantasyfan @451Degrees I will go into it with low expectations, which I already have. I already knew the world building was not great from other reviews. I have read a lot of older epic fantasy and YA fantasy, so maybe I can enjoy it for its age and view it more as a classic than fantasy. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I love this book and the whole series! I don‘t mind when magic systems are not fully explained. I don‘t understand how my phone works, either. 2w
451Degrees @Fantasyfan oh for sure! I didn‘t really mind the world building I thought that aspect was great! The more I think about it the more I am feeling like the characters were where it went a little more flat for me. I just hope you enjoy the read! 2w
451Degrees @Clare-Dragonfly that‘s a good point!☺️ I feel like I was just wanting a little bit more to the characters to match the world building. I loved the unique magic system and setting even if I didn‘t really understand it well😅 2w

Thank you @BookmarkTavern for creating this fun play-card.

The Old Kingdom Series by Garth Nix. Love his writing style 🪄✍️📚💝.

Also, while my interests would have one day led me to discover necromancy (I love reading about anything magical and ghostly)...it was in this series by Garth Nix that I first encountered this form of magic 🪄👻💝 in fantasy.

Thank you @debinhawaii for creating this fun play-card and thanks @Deblovestoread for tagging me.

1- Wonderful that U.S.A. was one of the countries involved in the Historic prisoner swap 😢🙏🥲.

2- Caught an episode of Captain Planet this week. Haven't seen this show since elementary age. The foundation of the show's storyline always stayed with me, yet the episode was like brand new. 💍🌎💍🌏💍🌍💍🎬💍. Hopefully I can catch more episodes🤞. 👇

AnnCrystal 3- Learned last night that CBS will premiere the new Matlock with Kathy Bates on Sunday, September. 22, 24. Been waiting for that show!

4- Saw a wild cat today, who watched me with these beautiful gem like eyes and a “trickster's“ glee. Wacky me recalled Mogget from the Old Kingdom books by Garth Nix.

5- Discovered a new song today and fell in love with the lyrics, “I believe in music“ sung by B.J. Thomas written by Mac Davis.

Deblovestoread Oh my, I haven‘t heard that song in so long nor thought about those two artist. Great memory! 5mo

1. Anne or Rosalind, the middle names of my grandmothers.

2. Love all of the names of the characters in this whole book series. Sabriel, Lirael, I just love that -el sound at the end of the names.

Lirael | Garth Nix

ebook ISBN 9781741769562

Where Sabriel came from Ancelstierre to the Old Kingdom and travelled all over on her adventure, so far Lirael has only been in the Clayr's Glacier. Mind you, she's only 14.and I'm only up to part 2, ch 14.
I notice that in Sabriel, we never learned the (old) Abhorsen's real name, nor Touchstone's.

humouress Ancelstierre seems very much like the English countryside of PG Wodehouse's time - despite Nix being Australian. But cricket is played in all 3 countries. (edited) 9mo
humouress Told in 3rd person from Lirael‘s POV and also Prince Sameth‘s (Sabriel‘s son) 9mo

Two weeks of #bookreport but not much to show. I'm making steady progress on audio, but reading with my eyes has been slow going. That's ok.

My #weeklyforecast is more just a bunch of possibilities. Who knows what I'll actually get to.

📚☺️💕📚💝.

Note:

The Old Kingdom books currently include:

Sabriel · Lirael · Abhorsen · Clariel · Goldenhand · Terciel and Elinor.

Plus some shorts.

Branwen I keep meaning to read this series! It looks fantastic! 💕📚 11mo
AnnCrystal @Branwen 👏I love this series. My absolute favorite. ☺️👍. The only work I've read by Garth Nix as of yet. Oh, he's a magical storyteller! I still need to read Terciel and Elinor. (edited) 11mo

Hahahahaha - at me from 5 years ago being like “gonna read this soon” THE OPTIMISM! I am still totally planning on reading this soon!

I also miss this fence from the clothes line courtyard of my old apartment building. It was just aesthetically pleasing!

ravenlee “Soon” is such a relative term… 11mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @ravenlee 🤣😂 - you are so right! 11mo

Sabriel | Garth Nix

Most of the book is set in the Old Kingdom, with medieval-type magic, but parts take place over the Wall in Ancelstierre, which seems to have WWII era technology (cars, b&w films, tanks, guns, planes).

Pickpick

Epic. Battle. Ending. This book more than makes up for its predecessor with the cliffhanger ending. Nix delivers another masterful novel, continuing the fascinating world-building that he began in “Sabriel”. 1000 ⭐️ out of 10.
