I read this as a result of enjoying the first in series from my LMPBC group, and I enjoyed it even more than the first one. It‘s very dark and shocking with a crime within a crime and 2 different perpetrators…always a neat concept.
Continue to like and be intrigued by Kate‘s character as I learn more about her heritage and the isolated Alaskan community around her. Definitely will continue with the series. 4.5/5⭐️

Jerdencon I‘m hoping to get to this one too. 1mo
bookandbedandtea I liked the first one enough to be interested in reading on so I'm glad to hear you think the next one is even better. 1mo
robinb @Jerdencon @bookandbedandtea I‘m really enjoying Kate‘s character more and more. And this one is really dark and has an interesting plotline. 1mo

A new author for me, this first in the Kate Shugak series, is centered around Kate, a native Aleut who works as a PI in Alaska. As an expert in her local Alaskan environs, she is asked to search for a park ranger who has been missing for 6 weeks and the FBI investigator who was sent to look for him.
I really enjoyed this book which is high on character development, a tight storyline, a suspense-filled plot, 🔻

robinb a surprise denouement and surprisingly, lots of humor. Kate is a force to be reckoned with…tough, resourceful and strong-willed. Along with her half-wolf, half-husky dog Mutt, there are a colorful array of community and law officials introduced and along for the ride as well. And I‘m happy to join the journey. 4.25/5 #LMPBC 2mo

Written in simple language, this novel provides a stark look into the life of an Alaskan Inupiat Eskimo family and their joys, triumphs, and tragedy over the course of a fateful winter.

5⭐
I haven‘t cared about the characters in a book this much in a long time. Especially Leni and Matthew. Kristin Hannah made the state of Alaska come alive for me. This was so very good. From the moment I started to the very last second, I was fully engaged. The narration by Julia Whelan was exceptional.

First time I read a book by this author, can you believe it?😳I have this book since 2018 thinking that I would not like it...but...
This book is intense and has the trigger of domestic violence. It is very explicit in the physical and psychological abuse. I will say this part was clinically well described. Also it was symptoms related with PTSD were well described.

Ernt and Cora married very young, Cora was 15 or 16 and Ernt was 25.⬇️

Gissy Cora hast not siblings and her parents didn‘t approve her marriage with Ernt. Cora said that Ernt changed after he came from the Vietnam War where he was captured and tortured. Cora asked him not to d listed. Since Ernt return, he cannot maintain a job, drink too much and has mood outburst. He maintains his family isolated. He inherited a home in Alaska and decided to move there with Cora and their 13 year old daughter Leni. ⬇️ 3mo
Gissy (Cont.) Living in Alaska turned Ernt into an abusive husband but also in Alaska Cora and Leni found good supportive friends. The story goes narrating what Cora and Leni lived with Ernt abusive behavior. Then something happens that the lives of Cora and Leni changed. Not much to say after this without spoiling the story.
I will say that it was hard to read in these parts and I felt frustrated with Cora decision even when I know...⬇️

Gissy (Cont.)...her behavior is part of that abusive relationship cycle. The co-dependent relationship between these characters is so dysfunctional. In real life, is worst. I didn‘t like one part at the end which I think was unrealistic. The end? Well I will like to think that there will be hope in this type of relations. But how realistic was the end? I don‘t know. 3.8/4⭐️ 3mo
