I tried to research and the best I could find was the “left-handed compliment“ has been around a lot longer (due to that idea of “left“ meaning “evil“), but “backhanded“ also has negative origins in the fact that it originated as a “backslap“ instead of a direct one ... it still hurts! 💛💜🧡 1mo

I‘ve never heard “left handed compliment” before, although I know left-handedness has long been associated with things being wrong or bad (eg, “sinister”, “gauche”, etc.) I suppose it‘s like how my kids‘ generation grew up only hearing “criss cross applesauce” and never … well, you know. 1mo
