#NoPlaceLikeHolmes @Cuilin
#LadyCarfax

IMHO, this one was a dud. We never even get to know what was really up with the Lady Carfax! And Holmes was the rudest to Watson in this one; he was quite the jerk.

Thoughts, Sherlockians?

eeclayton The plot was interesting and it held my attention. But I wasn't amused by Holmes' attitude in this one. 1w
CogsOfEncouragement I figured out the two bodies in the casket. I was on the edge of my seat to see if she was going to be found dead or alive. I thought Watson was being quite bad at the job and then Sherlock told him the same. Though, it almost seemed like Doyle was mad at Watson to write it this way. lol 1w
Librarybelle I didn‘t mind this one. Holmes‘ attitude was a bit off putting and reminded me of a strict adult reprimanding a bad child. 1w

Cuilin @Librarybelle @eeclayton agreed. Sherlock‘s temperament in this one is off putting. 1w
AnneCecilie I‘m always fooled and it doesn‘t seem to matter that I have read quite a lot of these stories by now. I wish we had gotten to know more about the how 1w
dabbe @eeclayton 🎯! 1w
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement The possible murder part was interesting; I don't recall such an urgency in past stories as in this one. I didn't think Watson did that horribly, considering he doesn't have the criminal encyclopedia that is in Holme's head. And Green was a stalker who could have killed him! Watson goes through all of that only for Sherlock to severely rebuke him. Not happy with SH in this one at all. 1w
dabbe @Librarybelle I keep wondering why SH sent him there anyway and then ended up going there. Watson does him a favor and goes, and gets nothing but shamed by Holmes. #notcool #imho 1w
dabbe @Cuilin 🎯! Just when we think he's showing growth, too! 1w
dabbe @AnneCecilie It bugs me when something is pulled out of the air--like Sherlock knowing about Shlessinger's ear and who he really was. For a detective story to be truly fair, shouldn't the reader have all the clues, too? Like you, though, I just love reading them and having them be solved for me. Most of the time. 🤩 1w
AnneCecilie @dabbe In theory I agree with, but no matter how many clues I get, I never manage to get it right. Sherlock is probably doing some investigating off the page, like Poirot later would do. 1w
dabbe @AnneCecilie We're not always privy to those little gray cells! 🤩 1w
kelli7990 I liked this story. 1w
dabbe @kelli7990 I'm glad you did! 🤩 1w

dabbe @lil1inblue I adore Steve Perry; his voice (like Robert Plant's) makes me weak in the knees. Of course, there could be other reasons, too. 🤔😂🤩 4mo
Lesliereadsalot I love this song! When I first met my husband and we would drive back and forth from our homes, this song was always on the radio. It‘s one of the few songs that actually means something to me. 🩷 4mo

Pickpick

This is always my least favorite book of the series, but this time I appreciated seeing Harry‘s first trip to the Burrow. I love how he immediately feels at home and makes Ron understand that he shouldn‘t be embarrassed by it. Fawkes is the other highlight. Harry would have been killed in an instant without him. It‘s also the book where Harry feels confident (at the end) about his placement in Gryffindor.

KadaGul Look 👀 @ the puppy 🐶 face 😍 8mo
Jess861 This is also my least favourite...I don't feel like the story moves forward too much in this one.....and just big spiders 😬😬 8mo

Seabreeze_Reader @avidreader25 @jess861 I recently listened to this again on audio and it still remains my least fav book in the series, too. Some aspects of the story that don't make sense, like Ron and Harry flying the car to Hogwarts. Ron's parents could have made sure they made it through the platform. Plus, Dumbledore always seems to disappear right before some big showdown. There are a lot of coincidences which allows the plot to slowly move forward. #imho 8mo
AvidReader25 @Seabreeze_Reader oh my goodness, yes! And once you read it after having kids, you start thinking how is this school allowed? This is incredibly dangerous for kids! 🤣 why couldn‘t Dumbledore have shared more information and helped everyone out in every single book! 8mo
AvidReader25 @Jess861 yup, I always feel like I have to get through this one in order for the series to start. 8mo

Pickpick

I set myself my own version of my favourite challenge #booked given it is not, for understandable reasons running. My husband and I had fun setting date related challenges and my book of poetry for WH Auden birthday was an enigma. I find poetry super intimidating but was pleased with this choice. The structure of many of the poems are deceptively simple (4 line verses, mostly alternating rhyme) but there were many poems here that will stick ⬇️

Itchyfeetreader The aurhor writes with wit but also real heart and there is an underlying sense of ‘sad but will work out okay‘ here. With that level of literary analysis I am sure no one is surprised as to why I didn‘t follow English literature beyond gcse ! 13mo
dabbe As a former high school English teacher, don't sell yourself short! As a student, I hated dissecting a poem to death. As a teacher, I hated making kids do that. Overall, poetry is meant to be enjoyed and FELT. No poet ever wanted his/her/their poem analyzed to death. I love your thoughts on this book of poems, and am so glad you're embracing poetry. Don't be afraid of it; you know so much more than you think you do #IMHO. 💚💙💚 13mo

I‘m not sure we can trust goodreads there‘s some fantastic books 📚 on there not rated as highly as you‘d expect but then again reading is such a personal thing ; anyway I‘m only 50 odd pages into this and I‘m loving 🥰 it , if it hadnt have been recommended to me I doubt I‘d have picked it up , must admit I can‘t remember Rosaline in Romeo and Juliet so reading the play alongside it

Suet624 I agree that Goodreads can not be completely trusted. Rotten Tomatoes too. 1y

dabbe I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the reviewers can be quite harsh on goodreads with their ratings. #imho 😃 1y

This is how I like Miscommunication as a plot device. Resolved in 1 Chapter rather than taking almost 45 hours. ??

Mehso-so

I will never be able to read a Heroine with a dirty petticoat and not think of this book. That being said, this was not for me. It's well written just not to my taste. Yes bodily functions happen and hygiene was different then; but I don't actually want to read about menstruation and unshaven armpits. 😳

Bailedbailed

Wow. My 4th Bail this year. That's a record. The older I get the easier it is for me to say nope moving on. Lots of people love this book, I just wasn't in the mood for a mother who died sleep swimming. Since it's for a Book Club that I don't always attend decided to Bail. #imho

Honestly I'm reading this because someone on Goodreads gave it 1Star Review instead of Shelving it as DNF. Don't know how to make a dedicated DNF shelf? Delete book and move on. It's not fair to give a bad review just because it's not 'Cozy' mystery you prefer. While they didn't actually finish the book; they did count all the Swear words they came across. 🤪

rubyslippersreads I read this review. I can understand briefly stating that the book is not for you because of language, violence, etc., because some people want that warning, but listing it all is ridiculous and seems rather vindictive. 😏 6y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @rubyslippersreads That's what got me. There's a big difference between 'It's not for me' and disparaging. 6y
