A day late (and a dollar short) for #weirdwordwednesday — but wanted to share anyway! I just finished the tagged book about the Dutch colony that first settled NYC. This section mentioned some of the Dutch words that were mutated into the English language and are still part of our lexicon 400 years later. As a word nerd, this type of stuff fascinates me!
@CBee

Ruthiella I nerd out on that kind of thing too! 😅 3d
BarbaraBB So funny to scroll and come upon words in my own language! Two very old fashioned and ordinary names in Dutch are Jan and Kees. That‘s what they called the Americans back in those days. Hence the American word Yankees! Just saying 😀 3d
Amiable @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I love seeing how languages merge and intermingle! 3d
CBee @BarbaraBB I had NO idea!! How cool is that? 3d
CBee @Amiable thanks for sharing 😊 3d

FRIENDS!! Posting late but I didn‘t want anyone to miss out on the absolute cuteness that is the pygmy marmoset! Sometimes I veer off course with the “weird” part, because cute animals 😂 Here‘s an article about them: https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/pygmy-marmoset #weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday

AmyG I love all monkeys! 🐒 4d
ncsufoxes My 15 year old is obsessed with the golden lion tamarins (he‘s obsessed with all types of monkeys). We saw them last summer at the zoo in Rhode Island. He still talks about them. We live close to the zoo in DC & just found out they have emperor ones (they have a long mustache). We used to live in San Diego & were frequent visitors of the zoo but I don‘t remember the marmosets. (edited) 4d

Leftcoastzen So cute! 4d
TheSpineView Adorable 3d
CBee @ncsufoxes I love them too! We have cotton-top tamarins at our local zoo. They look like what Einstein would look like if he were a monkey I think 😂 3d

#WeirdWordWednesday

I don‘t know why but this word always makes me stop in my reading. It never sounds “right” to me for some reason.

@CBee

CBee A weird one indeed 😂 4d

I‘m positive this word has been shared before for #WeirdWordWednesday , but I had to take some books off of a bookshelf today because the shelf has developed a concerning curve to it. So it‘s been on my mind. 😂😂 #WeirdWords

I‘m going to need to buy another bookshelf. 😅

shortsarahrose I grabbed a free, recently deleted book from the library I work at yesterday. Put it on top of a massive stack on top of one of my shelves. It fell off within minutes. So I put it on a different massive stack 😆 I have a problem 🫠 2w
BookmarkTavern @shortsarahrose Sounds like a good problem to have! 😆 2w
CBee Same problem here 😂🤪 2w

#WeirdWordWednesday @CBee

Another word that is not necessarily weird; however, it is new to me.

Hooked_on_books I like this word. I definitely see it in books but I‘m not sure I‘ve ever heard anyone actually use it. 2w
TheBookHippie I like it. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I love this word! I have multiple shirts that say it 2w

Prairiegirl_reading I used this word a lot as lockdown dragged on and on and on! 2w
TheSpineView @Hooked_on_books @TheBookHippie @ChaoticMissAdventures @Prairiegirl_reading Don't know how I missed out on such a cool word. Probably just wasn't paying attention! 🤪 2w
Bookwomble I have lived this 😮‍💨 2w
TheBookHippie @Bookwomble daily lately 😵‍💫👀😅🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures @TheSpineView it's very French I watch a ton of French movies in my teens and 20s I think maybe I got it from that maybe Amélie 2w
Bookwomble @TheBookHippie My life as a working-class aristocratic fop has led to much ennui, enervation and melancholic lassitude. It's only my daily tincture of laudenum that keeps me going! 2w
Prairiegirl_reading I don‘t know if this was the first time I ever heard the word but I always remember the Gilmore Girls episode where Sookie says the opposite of ennui is “off-wee.” 🤣🤣 2w

Allusion #2: POUND OF FLESH

I still can't believe that THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is on our district's 7th grade reading list alongside A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT'S DREAM. If you had your choice, which play would you rather read as a 12-13-year old?

TheSpineView Merchant of Venice... maybe. Not sure at that age I could have appreciated either. 2w
dabbe @TheSpineView It was a really hard sell to the kids. I only taught it one year. They loved MIDSUMMER. 2w
TheBookHippie Midsummer I imagine. As I‘m a nerd I loved all Shakespeare from age 12 on. 2w

dabbe @TheBookHippie You are NOT a nerd; you're THE Book Hippiest! 🤩 2w
TheSpineView @dabbe Surprising that they liked anything Shakespeare. Just goes to show... you can never underestimate kids. 2w
dabbe @TheSpineView 🎯🎯🎯! 2w
CBee I loved Midsummer. But, I didn‘t read it at 12 or 13! I was older. A favorite of mine for sure! 2w
CBee @TheBookHippie nerds are awesome. I know this because I, too, am a nerd. AND PROUD 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😂😂😂 2w
dabbe @CBee I can say unequivocally that MERCHANT OF VENICE is not one of my favorite Shakespearean plays. 🤣🤓🤩 2w
CBee @dabbe I‘m totally stealing #weirdwordsfornerds 😂😂👏🏻👏🏻 2w
dabbe @CBee It's yours! You inspired it! 🩵💙🩵 2w
CBee @dabbe ♥️♥️🥹🥹 1w
lil1inblue Most 12-13 year olds I know (and knew) would prefer Midsummer. I personally think that the themes in Merchant would be better understood in high school (I personally didn't read it until college). Although there's several other Shakespeare plays that I would put on the 7th grade list with Midsummer (mostly comedies). 1w

Not really weird but it‘s an opportunity to brag on my oldest kiddo (he will always be a kiddo for me despite being almost 13 😱). He was watching a play through of a favorite video game and mentioned how one villain shows up at the start, but you don‘t actually fight the villain until the end. He said “and that‘s an example of foreshadowing.” LORD I love this kid. #weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday

CBee Scott, wasn‘t sure which account to tag so, I tagged both 😊 @vivastory @eclectic-reader 2w
