I finally read this #bannedbook and was not disappointed! Yes, the violent subject matter is tough but I think it‘s worth it. I thought maybe the use of the Nadsat language would trip me up, but it‘s easy enough to glean from context the meaning of the words. And Tom Hollander did a great job with the narration! This one definitely leaves you with much to think about.

#autobiography completed #jennyis30.

Audiobook is narrated by Maya herself, which makes it 10x better than anyone else.

Also #bannedbook for #booked2020 @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

4 1/2 ⭐

Cinfhen I‘ve been meaning to read the Maya Angelou / would it work for classic??? 1d
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen probably, but it would do literary or possibly feminism... 1d
Cinfhen I might have used those already... I‘ll check my board 1d

Katie and I are having an ‘informal‘ buddy read of this book during January, if anyone else would like to join us.

As well as fitting the #belarus prompt for #readingeurope2020 this would also fit #bannedbook for #booked2020 as well as many other prompts in different challenges.

Katie - I‘ve split the book roughly into four sections, to read to the end of each, if that suits you? We can discuss briefly each weekend.....

Daisey I was just looking up books by this author the other day and saw my library has this available. However, I don‘t think there‘s any way I can fit it in this month. I will be interested to see what you think. 3w
Librarybelle A great idea! 3w
4thhouseontheleft I don't think I can read along this month, but I'm stacking for later in the year! 3w

Butterfinger I'd love to join. I need to order from the library so it may take awhile. 3w
squirrelbrain @youneverarrived - could you postpone a few weeks to let more people join in? I know you can‘t push it too far as you‘ll have other more important things on your mind soon! 👶 3w
BarbaraBB Happy new year Helen 💕. I have another book by her lined up already: 3w
youneverarrived This is perfect! So organised 😁 I‘m going to start reading it tonight. 3w
youneverarrived Oh I‘ve just seen your other comment. That‘s absolutely fine with me to postpone for a few weeks. I‘m going to try and squeeze as much reading time as I can before baby arrives 😁 (edited) 3w
squirrelbrain Let‘s stick with the plan Katie @youneverarrived as otherwise we‘ll clash with the baby 🤣. I‘ve been looking forward to this one anyway so I‘ll start it tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully it will be better than the rubbish I just read! 3w
squirrelbrain @daisey it would be great if you could join in, but we all have so many books, so little time! 😁 3w
squirrelbrain @4thhouseontheleft - hopefully it will be a good one! @BarbaraBB - I‘ve heard good things about this author. 3w
squirrelbrain @Butterfinger - it will be great to have you join in if you can get the book in time. 3w
youneverarrived Haha 😂😂 okie doke I‘ll start tonight then. Shame your first book of the year was bad but think this will be a good one! 3w
Cinfhen Sounds great / screenshot for a later date 😉🧡👍🏽 3w
charl08 This one is amazing. Wishing you good reading. I have the one about children's wartime experiences lined up for when I am feeling strong (this one and Chernobyl Prayer pretty much wrecked me). 3w
Butterfinger @squirrelbrain I should be able to get it by the 10th. 3w
squirrelbrain That‘s great news @Butterfinger - we look forward to you joining us! 3w
squirrelbrain @charl08 - it sounds amazing, although I‘m ready for the emotion.... 3w
Butterfinger @squirrelbrain I have my copy. The library was holding it for me. I'll be ready. 1w
squirrelbrain That‘s great news @Butterfinger - unfortunately this week I probably won‘t be able to join in with you and @youneverarrived . My lovely mother-in-law passed away last night so won‘t be posting much on Litsy. I look forward to seeing both of your posts though and will try to join in when I can. 1w
youneverarrived Oh I‘m so sorry Helen. Thinking of you ❤️❤️ 1w
squirrelbrain Thank you Katie @youneverarrived 😘 1w
Butterfinger I am so sorry. My condolences to you and your family. 1w
Suet624 Gah! Wish I‘d seen this earlier. I‘m now backlogged with books I have to read. I have this one on my shelf and you‘re making me really wish I were reading it. 7h
squirrelbrain Oh no @Suet624 - too many books, too little time.... Sorry you can‘t join us 🙁 4h

#GratefulReads @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620 #BannedBook

I am not a person who understands the need to ban any book, and I was lucky enough to have a teacher who read us this banned book in 4th grade and it changed me as a reader. This is the first book I remember making me cry. It made me feel so emotional that I just wanted to curl up and live inside its pages forever. 💚 Beautifully moving book about childhood and friendship.

Me reading The Hobbit on the beach a few years ago — a banned book that, sadly, I haven‘t finished yet! I keep falling asleep in the forest. 🤦🏻‍♀️

But I love the writing and the opening was just so magical!

First published in 1928, the tagged book became the subject of a trial under the Obscene Publications Act 1857, and was banned in the UK because it defended “unnatural practices between women.” The ban was not lifted until 1959, 16 years after the author‘s death.

I wasn‘t aware that this one was banned.. I didn‘t care for it at all... Banned for addressing teen suicide... 💔💔

Reviewsbylola I loved this one when I read it. So powerful. I am not surprised it‘s been banned unfortunately. 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Reviewsbylola I‘ve read other books addressing this issue and I‘m not sure why I disliked this one so much... 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2mo
OriginalCyn620 I loved this one! 2mo

mom2bugnbee Huh. I thought this might become required reading for high schools, since most require an anti-bullying curriculum. 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @mom2bugnbee I‘ll tag you in the link... maybe it is incorrect 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2mo
mom2bugnbee I'm sure this is right. Gotta love how the book that was banned for atheism is immediately followed by the Bible. 🤦🏻‍♀️ And Captain Underpants? Mercy. 2mo
LibrarianRyan It‘s been banned frequently because some think it glorifies teen suicide. It got heavier banning after the TV show. I personally liked this book and thought it was a great way for adults to talk to teens about the bad things in life. 2mo
mom2bugnbee @LibrarianRyan Totally agree. I didn't watch the show b/c I heard so many bad things about it. My oldest read it at, age 15 or 16, loved it, & also didn't watch the show, for the same reasons. 2mo
LibrarianRyan @mom2bugnbee the show wasn‘t bad... I liked seeing what was happening with the other kids. But I think it lost something to draw the time line out from one day to a month. And it left some things get more graphic or gossip girl like then I would have expected. 2mo

#Gratefulreads #bannedbook saw that @Branwen posted about this book as well.Great minds think alike.😁Way up there on my list of favorites, I have yet to read the other book about everything that happened to finally allow Ulysses to be published in the states.Though reading a lot about Joyce I know much of the story. No extra charge for the cat tail!

Branwen Great minds TOTALLY think alike, my friend! 😄 👏 I love your copy, it is gorgeous! 😍 What year is it from? I think mine is from 1946? The book on the left looks amazing! I'm going to have to look into that and see if my library has it! I am so fascinated by the book itself and all the controversy surrounding its publication and distribution. It's just so interesting!

Also I totally didn't see the cute kitty tail at first! 😻

Leftcoastzen @Branwen Mine is the 1946 with the dust jacket.I found it years ago at a used bookstore. 2mo
Branwen @leftcoastzen YAY! I think we may have the same edition! Mine is just sans dustjacket! 😆 Don't you just love used bookstore finds? 💕 2mo
