Ketchum‘s curated version here is the most readily available. Rather than reprinting all, or even a bulk, of the Anti-Federalists it showcases the more “popular” ones.
Most of this is a report on the debates between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. An important book for sure, but its presentation tells on itself.
I wanted to take a moment to pay homage to Portlanders who, instead of being cowed by a dictator, embraced their first amendment right to peaceful assembly and continued protesting, but in costume, to prove the lie to their city being “war ravaged.” I cannot think of a better response. I love their creativity and stance for their, and our, rights.
I‘ll read anything Lepore writes and her latest, out today, which is about the constitution feels especially timely. I know she thinks originalism is deeply flawed (she‘s right) and that our inability to amend the constitution is a threat to our democracy (again she‘s right). Can‘t wait to read more. I m expecting an informative, compelling and occasionally frustrating/maddening (because politics!) read. Top of the nonfiction pile it goes.
National Constitution Center just released their interactive Declaration of Independence, to match their interactive US Constitution. So many people are claiming these documents, but few people take the time to read and understand them. In America, there has always been this push & pull about what the Founders intended. Now, I can‘t say this book makes it obvious, partly because I believe Hamilton was insincere, but I feel most people can walk away from this wondering why in the hell the Supreme Court has such a problem understanding.
I just opened some book mail to discover this atrocity. 😭 I hope it comes off.
pickGreat collection of classic American documents, speeches, poems, etc. George Washington‘s speeches had a lot of big words that didn‘t say a whole lot. I also didn‘t know that it used to be first choice was made President and second choice was made Vice President. Teddy Roosevelt liked long, run-on sentences. The pledge of allegiance didn‘t originally have “under god” in it! President Eisenhower insisted it be added by Congress in 1954.
