The tagged book was published under two names, Tokyo and The Devil of Nanking.

When I got this book a lot of years ago, I knew the person who gave it to me got me, even though we'd only met a few weeks earlier.
It's a dark, bloody, sinister, but very good thriller.

I always try to avoid repeating books for this challenge, but Codrescu's Faustian dark comedy came to mind for this prompt, and when I looked it up, it only had a single post....from me, last November when none other than @Robothugs was co-hosting! The prompt was #soldmysoul Creepier still because Wakefield had exactly one year to find an 'authentic life' or the devil takes his soul. ⏳😈😬

A colleague with excellent taste in books has told me I must read this, by the talent that is Abraham Verghese. It‘s his memoir, and focuses on his friendship with a med student who has experienced the #DevilSide and is recovering from a drug addition. So far, the writing is exquisite.

Amiable Have you read "My Own Country: A Doctor's Story" already? I'd read that one first. That is the prequel memoir to this one. It is a stunning piece of work. It details Verghese's work with HIV patients as an infectious diseases physician in rural East Tennessee in the 1980s. It's nonfiction but reads like a novel.
