Cutting for Stone
Cutting for Stone: A Novel | Abraham Verghese
A sweeping, emotionally riveting first novelan enthralling family saga of Africa and America, doctors and patients, exile and home. Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mothers death in childbirth and their fathers disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politicstheir passion for the same womanthat will tear them apart and force Marion, fresh out of medical school, to flee his homeland. He makes his way to America, finding refuge in his work as an intern at an underfunded, overcrowded New York City hospital. When the past catches up to himnearly destroying himMarion must entrust his life to the two men he thought he trusted least in the world: the surgeon father who abandoned him and the brother who betrayed him. An unforgettable journey into one mans remarkable life, and an epic story about the power, intimacy, and curious beauty of the work of healing others.

“What first aid treatment in shock is administered by ear?”

“Words of comfort.”

Absolutely LOVING this book. Might be in my top 5 books of all time! It has some The Cider House Rules vibes— young adults learning medicine from makeshift parental figures— and thus growing up up grappling with difficult medical ethics. Strong themes of spirituality, family, and forgiveness. (And a good history lesson on Ethiopia!) 🇪🇹

I liked it overall. Loved experiencing Ethiopia, being a twin, and a new perspective on surgery and medicine. The ending saved it for me. A lot of gut-wrenching intense moments. It didn't have a strong narrative drive to keep me reading. It felt long, a bookclub deadline helped me finish it. But...good...

Mehso-so

(Author photo from Stanford University blog)

I‘m glad I finished this one, and I went back and forth on whether to rate it “pick” or “so-so” - but ultimately, despite loving the first 100 pages and the last 200, there were 367 pages in the middle that were less emotionally resonant, less gripping, and less interesting. But - still glad I finished it.

Thanks for the encouragement, @auntie_jenn ☺️

I have heard so many amazing things about this book and it‘s an Anne Bogel favorite (and she and I share similar tastes), so I expected to love it. I don‘t dislike it enough to put it down (especially now that I‘m 492 pages in), but I also don‘t especially look forward to picking it up. It‘s slow moving without the lyrical writing that I adore in long, slow books. Maybe it‘s just not the right book at the right time?

auntie_jenn i had a hard time getting into it too. keep going. i also switched to audio and that helped. it‘s a slow start, but so worth it. 6mo

“I grew up and I found my purpose and it was to become a physician. My intent wasn‘t to save the world as much as to heal myself. Few doctors will admit this, certainly not young ones, but subconsciously, in entering the profession, we must believe that ministering to others will heal our woundedness. And it can. But it can also deepen the wound.”

At first I wasn‘t sure about this book. I had expected a quiet, simple tale, although I don‘t know where I‘d got that impression from.

Once I got used to this loud, exuberant, colourful book I soon grew to love it.

Some “events” in my life:
1. The tagged book came to me just when I started a new job working with hospitalist doctors from all over the world. I‘ve never felt the “I‘m supposed to be reading this at this exact moment in my life” feeling as hard as I did then.
2. This is going to reveal a guilty pleasure but...Twilight. This one brought me back to reading for fun after years of college assigned reading.

I wish I had the space to keep going...

What an absolutely beautiful book! I now have an addition to my top five books of all time. Beautifully written, it tells the tale of conjoined twins and the intersection of love and forgiveness, mixed with intercultural issues. I loved the medical backdrop, which is paramount to the story. I‘m so glad to be reading this again. I started it back in 2010, and got about 25% in and left the book at a doctor‘s office. Goodwill came through and sold this replacement to me for $2. Marion and Shiva Stone are twin boys growing up in Addis Ababa, the children of a British surgeon and Carmelite nun from India. Marion relates this coming-of-age epic saga in reflective, elegiac prose as he explains how he had gotten to where he is today and deals with passion and betrayal. I enjoyed this reread for book club.

What an in incredible book. I‘m left stunned, and tired because I couldn‘t go to bed without finishing this today. This is a family saga, but it is also so much more. Finished this one for #24b4monday. I enjoyed this book, but it wasn‘t quite so OMG Amazing like I kept hearing. Overall a great story, but certain parts of it made me uncomfortable, which while not necessarily a bad thing, it felt a little more than necessary.

MelissaSue81 @a.bookish.byrd - well, the 10 hours is reading time from Friday until when I finished this book. I think I had about a 50 page head start, but Also almost 2 hours of the 10 was listening to an audiobook of The Luckiest Girl Alive.. so I would guess my total reading time was somewhere between 9-10 hours. This was a LONG book though. No way I‘d have finished it in 2 days without the #24b4monday readathob 1y

This glorious, sprawling chunkster is part medical drama, part family saga, and part historical record, and I loved it. Verghese forces the reader to inhabit his characters' lives--but since the novel is in first person, you've also gotta wonder how accurately narrator Marion Stone has pegged his family members (and himself). The story works on multiple levels and gave me exactly the wallowsome experience I needed, with one caveat. ⬇️

xicanti Or two, actually. One's a general warning: Verhgese does NOT fade to black during the medical scenes, so if you're at all squeamish you probably want to go with the print book so you can skim whenever necessary. Also, there's some REALLY dodgy sexual content, including extreme dubcon and scenes where adult women make explicit advances to 13-year-old boys. Marion sees nothing wrong with either, even from his narrative distance. 1y

I made Charlie a sweater this weekend! It's a bit hard to tell in any of the pictures I managed to get, but the sweater has thick stripes that fade from white at the neckline to muted green at the bottom. #audioknitting

@MinDea & @Robothugs Thanks for the #favoritebookgiveaway I remember being blown away by Cutting for Stone. I couldn't believe that an actual doctor could write like that.

India, Ethiopia, and America. The atmospheres, cultures, and histories of each place stand independently while at the same time blur into each other as the characters in the book move from place to place. The characters and places they inhabit are complicated and it was genius to use medicine as the backdrop for all of it.

Abby2 This was a powerful book! 1y
Nebklvr @Abby2 It would have been perfect had he stopped after the liver surgery! I was thinking I just might get a happy ending... 1y

An epic and diverse story about twin brothers and their journey through life. You really come to know the characters and feel for their points of view. For me this was a book about familial love, both the family we're born/adopted into and the one we choose for ourselves.
