“But the sea was full of wonderful creatures, and as he swam from marvel to marvel Swimmy was happy again.“
I would use this book to inspire students to create art with water color, and teach them about the ways a paint brush can be used to create shapes and feelings. I would talk about the intentionality it takes to use water color paintings.
The illustrator uses shapes and lines to create different animals in the ocean. She uses the organization of shapes to create great sea of fish, creating a realistic, yet painting vibe. The colors add a calming feature to the book.

With my last name being Fisher, I absolutely loved how this book focused on a fish and how beautiful the illustrations are. I will absolutely add this to my classroom library.
Leo Lionni‘s Swimmy (1963) is a timeless tale of courage and teamwork. The watercolor and collage art brings the ocean vividly to life, from glowing jellyfish to dark rocks. Lionni‘s color choices highlight Swimmy‘s difference, while the final image—small fish forming one giant fish—shows the strength of unity. The art deepens the story, making it both powerful and unforgettable.

In all of the High Republic books this one is the most hopeful. Reath Silas leads an expedition to Kashyyyk to stall the Blight. Unfortunately, the drengir also show up and the wookies have their own secrets 💚

I have given this book a lengthy review elsewhere (GR, my blog) substantiating my “pan”. But while I think roughly half of the book is a great reference for the actual (his)story of sushi, the sensationalism and hypersexualizing of Kate (alongside other fixations with women‘s bodily presence) was a huge turn off. That, paired with the “see Spot run” style of writing made this a no-go for me. Watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi instead.

Nominated for the Washington State children's choice picture book award 🇺🇲, this starts out silly. The super power has an element of surprise and I don't want to spoil it. Let's just say that this would be an excellent book to share when you need to prove that one small thing can make a huge difference. #WSCCPBA #bethechange
