House Without a Key | Earl Derr Biggers

Mehso-so

I was curious how the books compare to the Charlie Chan movies. Surprisingly, I didn‘t have a strong picture of Chan as I read this. He was just one of a number of characters, and I didn‘t find as much detail of his investigations. There is quite a lot of description about 1930s and past Hawaii/Honolulu, however.

The story itself is really kind of a downer, (maybe a little noir?) so while it was interesting, I wouldn‘t say I enjoyed it.

mabell Thank you for sending it @Gissy ! 11mo
Librarybelle Great pick for 1925! 11mo

mabell @Librarybelle I realize it was that old! So I should have said 1920s 😆 11mo
Librarybelle 😂 I didn‘t even catch that in your write up about the book! I saw the year in your tag! 11mo
Gissy @mabell So bad! I was planning to read it when I saw the book in your wish list. I enjoyed those old episodes of Charlie Chan. That‘s what I enjoy about swaps or when I send gifts, I look over those wish lists, which means more books in my wish list. I think I will be immortal to read all the booksi I like🤣🤣🤣 11mo
mabell @Gissy I‘m glad I read it! Every time I watch a Charlie Chan and see “Earl Derr Biggers”, I‘m curious! Now I know 😆 Interestingly, there is a restaurant called the House Without a Key in Honolulu! I know what you mean about adding to the wish list 🙋‍♀️😂😂 11mo

Here‘s my last #bookspin of 2023. Displayed in order as they await to be placed on the bingo board. This challenge has helped me read more books than ever before and so many off my TBR shelves. Thanks @TheAromaofBooks for doing this every year!

Also, I wanted to highlight how beautifully you wrapped the gifts! Your creative folding and tucking in the bookmarks was fabulous! You aren‘t allowed to deprecate your wrapping skills anymore! 🤣🤣

Gissy I watched some videos to do this, something different and not too complicated 😄 2y
mabell @Gissy It looks fabulous! Watching videos is such a great idea! I‘ll have to look up some! 2y
Gissy @mabell That one is very easy🤗 2y

This has been my Labour Day so far. I was out under the crabapple trees and then the weather started to change.

I absolutely loved this book!!! This book followed Jin as she tried to find her freedom while describing the history of Korean picture brides, the Golden Age in Honolulu, racism, plantations, prostitution, and the creation of Hawaiian shirts. I cried so much towards the end. 5⭐️

Note: Ebony would not get out of the picture. She hates taking pictures so I was surprised that she kept posing. I think she wants a snack. 😅

KristiAhlers I have loved all of this authors books! 2y
Ruthiella I hope you gave her a snack then! 🐶🦴 2y
vonnie862 @Ruthiella she sure did 😉 who can say no to that face? 2y

As a teenager I loved hard boiled detective fiction. The policemen of McBain‘s 87th Precinct, Travis McGee, Lew Archer all intrigued me just as their predecessors like Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe. When I saw the old school cover and premise of Five Decembers I added it to my TBR. When it won the Edgar, I started reading. Is it good? Let‘s just say Hammett, Chandler and both MacDonalds would be very impressed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EvieBee I‘m currently reading this and it‘s soooooo good! Just the thing to pull me out of a slump. 2y

I really enjoyed this. I not only learned about the life of a picture bride, I learned about Hawaii in the early 20th century, and about Korea and the interactions with Japan that I really knew nothing about. I was impressed with how many real-life people Brennert brought into the story
