House Without a Key | Earl Derr Biggers

Mehso-so

I was curious how the books compare to the Charlie Chan movies. Surprisingly, I didn‘t have a strong picture of Chan as I read this. He was just one of a number of characters, and I didn‘t find as much detail of his investigations. There is quite a lot of description about 1930s and past Hawaii/Honolulu, however.

The story itself is really kind of a downer, (maybe a little noir?) so while it was interesting, I wouldn‘t say I enjoyed it.

mabell Thank you for sending it @Gissy ! 5mo
Librarybelle Great pick for 1925! 5mo

mabell @Librarybelle I realize it was that old! So I should have said 1920s 😆 5mo
Librarybelle 😂 I didn‘t even catch that in your write up about the book! I saw the year in your tag! 5mo
Gissy @mabell So bad! I was planning to read it when I saw the book in your wish list. I enjoyed those old episodes of Charlie Chan. That‘s what I enjoy about swaps or when I send gifts, I look over those wish lists, which means more books in my wish list. I think I will be immortal to read all the booksi I like🤣🤣🤣 5mo
mabell @Gissy I‘m glad I read it! Every time I watch a Charlie Chan and see “Earl Derr Biggers”, I‘m curious! Now I know 😆 Interestingly, there is a restaurant called the House Without a Key in Honolulu! I know what you mean about adding to the wish list 🙋‍♀️😂😂 5mo

Pickpick

This is a cute book about Greenery Street, a lovely street with small houses, perfectly suited for newlyweds. Felicity and Ian do move there and we follow them through their first year of marriage. Set in the early 20th century it feels very old-fashioned but that‘s exactly the charm of the book. A light pick.

The Flight of the Heron | D. K. Broster

Pickpick

D. K. Broster seems to be mostly forgotten these days, but I've enjoyed very much several of her historical fiction novels . This novel is the first of a trilogy about the unexpected friendship between two soldiers on opposite sides of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion in Scotland.

AKA The Artamanov Business, this novel looks at 3 generations of former serfs who run a linen factory and have become successful merchants. As they try to fit into their adopted town and grow the business, they hear the whisperings of the peasant uprisings of the early 20th century. A slow read for me. #1001books #192019 #1925 #intranslation

The Heroes || Charles Kingsley

Short stories about Greek mythology, initially written as short stories for children – I have no idea how I came to own this 1925 edition but it's beautiful and includes poetry as well.
