Day 8 coffin - Marie Lavaeu cemetery tour. Nothing says NOLA like a tour to give your respects to a powerful woman of fact& legend. Also October is Hoodoo heritage month

Thank @BrittanyReads for recommending this amazing book! I‘m a sucker for MG ghost books when I want something light to read, and this one was above and beyond. It was actually pretty creepy. The character of Hoodoo was a great narrator, very true to the tone and time, and multi-dimensional. Also helps that I loooove a good book about hoodoo and/or voodoo. Taught about the magic & culture as well. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

brittanyreads Yay! I'm so happy you enjoyed it!! 😆 I have his other book on my shelves but haven't read it yet! I hope it's just as good! 2y
Jess_Franzino @BrittanyReads I‘m so reading more of his books ❤️ You also inspired me to pick up some books by Darcy Coates! Sadly, BAM was out of “The Haunting of Ashburn House”, but they were having a “Buy 2 Get 1 Free” sale on her other books, so I got those. You have some killer taste in books 💕 2y
brittanyreads Aw, thank you! We have similar tastes! I'll keep an eye out for your reviews of books you love and add them to my TBR!! Definitely all the good ghost stories 👻 2y

4.5/5⭐
This is a remarkable MG book! The character of Hoodoo Hatcher is done so well. His voice, and the way he comes into his own throughout this short novel is perfection! While Hoodoo is 12 and I believe this is classed as MG, this book got DARK! Some serious hoodoo practice, murder, hanging, racial topics, and demons. Maybe save this for older kids! But a beautifully written book overall. Very deserving of the Coretta Scott King award.

FEELING the Fall vibes this morning! 🍂
Got up and baked pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting to accompany my coffee & book this morning! 🌅
Just started the tagged book and it's so good! I love 12yo Hoodoo and his family and the atmosphere is perfection! 👌
I think I may have stumbled upon a new fave MG author! Loving his writing and his book The Mesmerist looks great!! I need to hunt down a copy, stat!

I enjoyed this re-read. I first read this when I was in middle school. It was interesting to read it again as an adult. I definitely noticed of 2011 YA tropes, but somehow it made me nostalgic.

Let‘s talk about underrated books. These are a few that come to mind. They are all awesome, but I haven‘t seen them talked about that much. If you have read any of them let me know! What book do you think deserves more love?
