#hysterics

Traveller Richard Ayton was shocked when he visited the genteel resort of Parkgate, Cheshire in 1813:

Few of both sexes thought it necessary to hide themselves under the awning of bathing machines: posts, with ropes fastened to them, are fixed into the sands, and these were taken possession of by numerous groups of women, six or seven in a row, jumping, ducking, laughing and screaming, evidently as careless of being seen as of being drowned.

mabell Sea-bathing is such fun that you may lose your sense of decorum. (And go into #hysterics !) #200PnPcovers 2y

#200PnPcovers @CrowCAH @mabell When I think of a woman in #hysterics I think of Mrs.Bennet, and the fact that Mr.Bennet must roll his eyes #hundreds of times a day…

Day 13. What‘s better than a quote about justice than showing Mrs. Bennet in one of her fits of hysterics! Here she‘s distraught over learning about Lydia‘s disappearance with Wickham!

EvieBee Her poor nerves! 2y
CrowCAH @EvieBee we know not how she suffers! 😆 2y

I‘m sure one could experience #Hysterics taking adventures in this book. Choose your own adventures for Jane Austen fans - who will you end up with at the end? Choose wisely, or there may be a Wickham or a Willoughby in your future… #200PnPCovers

CrowCAH I seemed to always end up with the same endings, no matter if I changed course. 2y
TravelsWithBooks My Lady‘s Choosing by Kitty Curran is a choose your own adventure for the Austen fan as well! 2y

Sometimes it feels like an author has an idea for a P&P variation but it isn't enough of an idea to make a whole story, so she just kind of slaps on a second story to make it longer. Here, the first half of this book was pretty good. During Elizabeth's visit to the Collinses, Darcy and Elizabeth have more opportunities for conversations before Darcy's proposal. Charlotte is more vocal in her support of Darcy and helps Elizabeth see some things ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) from Darcy's perspective. But in the second half, after D&E are engaged, Elizabeth suddenly goes from being self-confident and saucy to being constantly on the verge of #hysterics about whether or not she's “good enough“ to be Mrs. Darcy. It was so repetitive and boring and didn't fit with the characters established in the first half at all. It was a shame, because the book started so strongly.

CrowCAH Hmm I see what you mean. Yeah, some ideas are much better suited to a vignette or short story. They don‘t carry enough conflict to make a full story. 2y
mabell It drives me crazy when a consistently strong character all of a sudden becomes wishy-washy, and unsure of herself! (The same thing happened in the Murder She Baked series) To have a character act so “out of character” makes it difficult to follow the flow of the rest of the story. Nice job fitting in hysterics! 2y
