Challenged in 2006 for using a derogatory word to describe the young Japanese American MC, this book touches on the Japanese Interment camps in the US during WWII and how baseball helped the MC cope and excel. This #PictureBook is probably better suited for an older child, and one that especially likes baseball. The illustrations add to the dusty, hot atmosphere of the camp setting. #BBRC #LetterC

LibrarianRyan Not heard of this one. Stacked 2y
Leftcoastzen I love this book! 2y
mandarchy This book pairs well with Dear Ichiro by Okimoto. 2y
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan @Leftcoastzen This particular edition came with the book on audio. I did not listen to it, but I think that‘s an awesome way for kids to immerse into the reading - listening to the book while following along with the printed text and viewing the illustrations. 2y

It's 1942: Tomi Itano, 12, is a second-generation Japanese American who lives in California with her family on their strawberry farm. But everything changes after the attack on Pearl Harbor…

🎧 A well told story of a Colorado community and a nearby internment camp during WWII.

An American story. A story of Americans. Frankly I think this should be in every middle grade class in America. I cannot recall learning about WWII Japanese relocation camps until I was out of school. If we did it was so glossed over I didn‘t recall it. So important to tell the story of all Americans. Reading this makes me want to read Dallas‘s adult novel on the subject, Tallgrass.

OutAndAbout @megnews If you haven‘t read it yet, George Takei‘s graphic novel They Called Us Enemy is another eye opening first hand account. I highly recommend it. (edited) 4y
megnews @Out-and-about I read that this year and agree it was excellent. Another great one I recently read is 4y
OutAndAbout @megnews nice. I‘ll check that out. 4y

I feel like I‘ve been MIA for a few weeks, going from posting three or four times a day to once or twice a week. I think some things just got to me more than I realised. Anyway, I‘ve finally had some time off work, I‘m feeling a little refreshed, and it seems I‘m ready to bore you all again. Sorry 😂 Does a picture of my cat with her tongue out soften the blow? 😁

sharread Glad you're back what a cutie. 😻 4y

Good World War II historical fiction about the Dutch population in Java and a family‘s internment in a Japanese prison camp...I can‘t remember reading a novel set in this world of WWII history before.
