As I clean the guest room so it is suitable for guests I had to take a small bookcase out (never fun) I still am obsessed with these little Booksellers stickers they used to put inside the books. How can there be so many books in a small bookcase ? 5 boxes ? Really?

LeahBergen So cool! 2w

In 1982, despite an absence of boating experience, Jonathan Raban decided to sail around England. Here he presents his travels on sea and stops on land in a snapshot from a different era. He also does a little random noodling. I enjoyed it.

Texreader Such a sweet photo too! 3mo

5/5. Based on the shipwreck of the Essex. A whaler based out of Nantucket, it was sunk when an angry sperm whale rammed it. This story was the inspiration for Moby Dick. The portrayal of cannibalism the crew was forced to resort to in order to stay alive is horrifying. (Side note-apparently cannibalism became so common after shipwrecks that when survivors were rescued they were quick to say when they hadn‘t resorted to cannibalism 😳)

Like a giant bird of prey, the whaleship moved lazily up the western coast of South America, zigging and zagging across a living sea of oil.

1. I sold 10 resin bookmarks to one lady who wanted to give them to her book club.
2. I went fishing, and of course, my husband caught most of the big fish. 23 in pickerel for one.
3. Lily of the valley is blooming
4. My pansies
5 My lilac tree finally had 2 blossoms.

Read4life The bookmarks are gorgeous!! 5mo
julieclair Those bookmarks are beautiful! Do you sell on Etsy? I bought some very similar ones there and now I‘m wondering if they came from you! And, I adore Lilies of the Valley. 5mo
dabbe Yay for #1! 💙💚💙 5mo
LiseWorks @julieclair, no, I only sell them at local markets. I'm sure I'm not the only one that makes them. 5mo
DebinHawaii A lovely list of joys! 💛💛💛 Lilacs, Lily of the valley & pansies are 3 of my favorite flowers. 💐 And your bookmarks are gorgeous! Thank you for sharing & spreading the joy! 🤗 5mo

Whew. Fascinating, grim (how would it not be), but a solid read. I‘m about halfway through, and have also been enjoying the historical context the author provides — social and political status of all the people on board, how unbearably crowded it was, the influence of the Thirty Years War on the soldiers on board, etc.

rwmg I don't know where you're based, but have you seen the remains of the Batavia in the Shipwreck Museum just outside Perth, Western Australia? 5mo
Kinniska I‘m a Yank up in the New England area, and I haven‘t as yet gotten to explore anywhere in Australia, but I hope to do so while visiting friends in NZ some day. I saved the museum that holds collected items from the wreck to my Google maps list. 5mo

June 1972. Attacked by killer whales, their forty three foot schooner sank in 60 seconds. They survived on a raft and then just a dinghy for 37 days. This is their story.
