My Sunday afternoon read is a novella that‘s considered a masterpiece in the style of magical realism. It was influential to many Latin American writers, including Gabriel García Márquez. ❤️

I‘m just glad I didn‘t skip the forward by Susan Sontag or I wouldn‘t know what‘s going on! So far I‘d call it surreal...and haunting! ? #mexicanauthors

Ruthiella I always read the forward last for fear of spoilers! 😬 Glad it worked out in this case! 6y
rachelk @Ruthiella That‘s a good point - this forward might not be for everyone. Even though I like magical realism, I don‘t read it very often and tend to find it confusing without some explanation. 6y

Just started this...40 pages in and loving it so far! 😀#mexicanauthors

lynneamch I really enjoyed this one. Funny how I never think about folks bowling in Mexico, but, why not? Strong female characters! 7y
AlaMich @lynneamch Yes! It's charming and funny and tragic and infuriating all at the same time. 7y
lynneamch Exactly! 7y

Catching up on my photo challenges! I took this photo in Mexico when I was there for an archaeological dig several years ago. The only books I have read recently by #mexicanauthors are this one and Like Water for Chocolate, but I have several more on my TBR! It was such a beautiful place and I want to go back. #maybookflowers

Lovely, heart-warming, heart-breaking story of 19-Nayeli and friends who cross the border into the US to bring back her father and other men who left her small Mexican town years before to find work. Full of rich characters like Tia Irma who still makes me smile. Urrea brings them so much to life that I feel I shoud be able to meet them in person. #MexicanAuthors @RealLifeReading

Texreader Sounds amazing. And timely. 7y
hyacinth Ahhh I have so many Urrea books on my TBR. I really need to get to them. They sound so beautiful. 7y
lynneamch @hyacinth This is the only one I've read, but the others do sound good, especially 7y
lynneamch I see there are no posts for it yet. Wonder what other littens think. 7y

Vivid & sensual. You may hate Tita's lot in life, but you can't hate a witty, romantic novel that includes recipes! Pic via Cakechooser-a better cook than I! #Loveandfood #Maybookflowers #MexicanAuthors

"Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?"

"I leave you my portrait so that you will have my presence all the days and nights that I am away from you."

I bought this after being so awestruck by this woman, her life, and art when the Detroit Institute of Arts had an exhibit of her work. She epitomizes "though she be little, she is fierce".

andrew61 That looks like an incredible book. 7y
Jess_Read_This @DebinHawaii Oh! I haven't made any of the recipes yet. Is there one that stands out as a must make first one? 7y

I loved this book so much! I sat in bed for a few hours and devoured it. Such a bittersweet book, just like the best kind of chocolate. #mexicanauthors #maybookflowers

I was going to take a picture of The Inexplicable Logic of My Life by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, but forgot before I left this morning! I saw him speak in March and that one is still on my TBR.

One thing I enjoy about doing these photo challenges is finding new books to fit the themes. In the library today I found this series of memoirs from Francisco Jimenez about immigrating to America from Mexico, his childhood as a migrant worker and life beyond.

My two favorite #MexicanAuthors: Sandra Cisneros & Valeria Luiselli. This essay by Luiselli just came out and is about undocumented immigration to the United States—can't wait to dig into it but I've heard it's amazing. 🇲🇽 #MayBookFlowers

ohyeahthatgirl It's so good and so important! I love her, too. 7y
WordWaller Just started it (TMHIE) and wow. Wowowow. Hard to read but so important. 7y
