With so much time on Zoom and reading while sitting indoors, I've been having terrible eye strain, and today I woke up with it barely improved from where it was last night after classes. By the afternoon I had a terrible migraine, which is still terrible, so I treated myself to the first book on my #bookspinbonanza list that's available as an audiobook! (It's a good few down the list...) #migraineandaudiobook

Current #audiobook. (Got some #migraineandaudiobook listening time in yesterday.) So far I'm finding the characters very unlikeable and the book feels kind of flat overall? But I really want to love it. Have you read it? What did you think?

I like to use celebrity memoir audiobooks, despite knowing almost nothing about celebrities, TV, or movies, as #migraineandaudiobook reads. They're light, low pressure, and sometimes funny: perfect for whiling away the migraine hours.

My most recent two listens also happen to be by openly gay celebrities, about whom I know even less than usual, because of my parents/hometown. They're mildly funny, and NPH is adorable talking about his family!

MatchlessMarie Some of my favorite celebrity memoirs I read this year were from Bryan Cranston and Billy Crystal 👌 6y
Cinfhen Sorry about the migraine 🤕I find celebrity memoirs work really well on audio! Best one EVER 6y
Caterina @MatchlessMarie Thanks for the recommendations!! 👍😊 @Cinfhen Thank you 💛 Yess Born a Crime is still the only celebrity memoir I've loved, and I've listened to it twice it was so good! 😍 6y

#readathon update: when I finally got home last night, I had a migraine. 😩 I listened to Her Body for a little over an hour, then I had to sleep off the migraine. Now I'm awake and digging into Black Tom, and I'm loving it so far! It's 6:30 AM here, so I still have a while before church! #deweysreadathon #litsymigraineclub #migraineandaudiobook

I find Moran's rant about shoes utterly unrelatable, despite her insistence on its universality to all women. A)Why does she keep shoes she hates and does not wear? B)Why does she spend money on all these heels she knows she'll hate when she could be buying books? C)The two pairs of heels I do own I find to be comfortable, confidence-boosting, and easy to walk in. If this were not the case, why would I buy and keep them? 😑 #migraineandaudiobook

BookishFeminist 😂😂 are you hate reading this now? 7y
WhatDeeReads I bailed on this book because I found it completely unrelatable. 7y
OrangeMooseReads I didn't care for this book. She got really annoying with odd topics. 7y

ReadingEnvy This book! So the opposite of what I expected, didn't find her perspective on being a woman positive at all. 7y
Caterina @BookishFeminist Haha yes I absolutely am!! I often prefer hate reading to bailing on books, it's somehow more satisfying! 😂 7y
Caterina @Lucky_LaDee I'm also finding it completely unrelatable! This is one example of so, so many! 7y
EloisaJames I bailed. But I thought her points about porn and waxing were interesting. 7y
Caterina @OrangeMooseReads She does, doesn't she? It's like she aggressively pushes certain random things. 7y
Caterina @ReadingEnvy I agree!! 7y
Caterina @EloisaJames I agree! The book seemed to go downhill from there, but it was really interesting to hear porn and waxing discussed so openly and I liked some of the points she made. 7y
BestOfFates I got like ¼ through that book before deciding I couldn't take it anymore! 7y

How to Be a Woman | Caitlin Moran

This has been a #migraineandaudiobook evening (curse you, weather changes!). Something I couldn't put my finger on earlier in this book is becoming more apparent: Moran's feminism makes me uncomfortable. I'm still a little new to the very exciting world of feminism, having just discovered it while in college, but Moran's strikes me in a negative way. Particularly the bit about women doing "fuck all" for 100,000 years. Any thoughts, friends?

Caterina @BookishFeminist You're someone I look up to in the world of feminism, have you read this book? 7y
Bibliogeekery Sorry to hear about the migraine! I'm in migraine-land too! 🤕 7y
Caterina @Bibliogeekery Thank you! I hope you feel better soon! 💛 7y

Bibliogeekery @Caterina Thx. You too! 😘 7y
EllieDottie I felt the same way about this book... It didn't quite sit right with me, some parts I enjoyed but some parts I found hard to read. I hope you feel better soon! (edited) 7y
xicanti I haven't read this myself, but that's because I've seen so many criticisms of Moran's feminism from thinkers I trust. 7y
Bambolina_81 I've tried liking Moran's work but...no. I can't stand her manner. She has some good ideas but then goes over the top and can be needlessly crass. To me she is, sadly, what a lot of young women see as 'Feminist' and that troubles me. 7y
Caterina @EllieDottie Good to know I'm not alone! And thank you! :) 7y
Caterina @xicanti I'd only heard good things before starting it. I should look up these criticisms! 7y
Caterina @Bambolina_81 Her manner is fairly crass, and I thought that was all that was making me uncomfortable at first, but I think some of her ideas bother me too. She makes a lot of unwieldy generalizations that I can't agree with. 7y
Bambolina_81 @Caterina I just can't buy into her. She writes as she speaks...AT you. Not my brand of feminism at all. 7y
Caterina @Bambolina_81 Do you have a favorite feminist book you'd recommend? 7y
BookishFeminist I have. Fuck this book. There are: slurs against trans people, transphobic definitions of feminism, racist remarks, slurs, equating being bullied for ones weight to racism, slut shaming for women who do sex work in any capacity, and insinuating that women "can't be friends" bc we're catty. ?????? needless to say I'm not a fan of her or this book and it's a shame people look up to her for feminism. It's even bad for "white" feminism. 7y
BookishFeminist Not to mention the remarks you noticed about erasing women's contributions to history when we were largely oppressed. I appreciate your kind words to me. It means a lot. ❤️❤️ lol I have lots of thoughts on her, bless you and anyone else who asks me about them 😂 7y
Bambolina_81 Adichie is great but also for me fiction is a great source of feminist voices. Handmaid 's Tale, for instance offers a vision of everything that can be wrong in society. It makes you think about what is wrong and how we can be different. That's feminism to me. Something that encourages thinking and action not something that hits you over the head in an ill considered way (Moran). 7y
Bambolina_81 @BookishFeminist ugh...she drives me a bit nuts. She comes across as feminism is all so easy for her but really Moran just stomps about in her DMs spouting off at the expense of many other groups. Just ugh...No! In total agreement with you. 7y
BookishFeminist @Bambolina_81 Yes, it's so gross. I agree. I threw this book across the room a few times while reading bc her racism & internalized misogyny were so blatantly obvious and disrespectful to many. I had to force myself to finish bc it was for a book club. Won't ever buy or listen to anything from her tbh. 7y
Caterina @BookishFeminist It's great to hear your thoughts! It helps me pinpoint what bothers me about the book and analyze it. I wonder if you could elaborate on the trans issues? I know very little about that, although reading Redefining Realness was a huge help and very eye-opening, and I'd like to get better at taking trans people into account in my feminism and in general. 7y
Bambolina_81 @Caterina also this is a good read. I hadn't heard of some of these extrordinary women. While Murray has obviously chosen these women as she admires them she accepts her bias but tells their stories in an engaging way. Perhaps Moran hasn't heard of them either if she thinks women have been sitting around doing nothing?! Sorry, I'll hush now. 7y
BookishFeminist @Caterina been a while since I've read this so I'm paraphrasing but she uses trans slurs throughout: "tr*nny" for instance. She also defined feminism in a way that said you can only be feminist if you have a vagina & believe in equality. Janet Mock's memoir is amazing. I recommend Julia Serrano's as well. Her book Whipping Girl (her memoir) and this book about being more trans inclusive with feminism are great: 7y
Caterina @Bambolina_81 Reading Americanah last fall was life-changing for me! Watching her TED talk (We Should All Be Feminists) afterwards became the basis for my ideas of feminism. I haven't read the Handmaid's Tale yet, but I certainly will soon! 7y
Caterina @Bambolina_81 Oo that does sound interesting! Haha Moran should give it a read! 7y
Caterina @BookishFeminist Thank you so much for the two book recommendations! They sound amazing! Reading Janet Mock's memoir really made me aware of a huge, detrimental gap in my knowledge. Before I read it, I had only the vaguest awareness of the trans population and just knew that everyone where I'm from considers them ultimate sinners and will not speak of them. Consequently I have so much to learn! 7y
BookishFeminist @Caterina no problem! I have a lot more where that came from. You can also check out the #transbooks hashtag here and find lots of recs :) this is written by a trans author who lives in the south and might be an interesting perspective. It's YA romance 7y
Caterina @BookishFeminist Oh, that would be a very interesting perspective! Growing up in my small South Carolina town, I always assumed no one in my town was anything but straight and cis, and that anything else was for atheists who lived in California or New York. 😂 It's been mind-blowing and terrifying to start considering what life would be like in places like my town for anyone who isn't a straight cis person. 7y
Moray_Reads I have to admit I've only read a few of her columns and most of them were about television rather than feminism - I didn't even like those. She's like a bulldozer and anything that doesn't fit her ideas of womanhood is either wrong or a lie. I hugely recommend the book in the link, fresh, young, diverse, funny, angry and current (but STILL not on the Litsy database!) http://www.404ink.com/nasty-women-coming-2017/ 7y
ReadingEnvy Do you still live in SC? I'm in the upstate! 7y
Caterina @Moray_Reads I absolutely agree! I'm planning on saying some of the same things in my negative review of this book! And thank you for the recommendation, it looks really good!! 7y
Moray_Reads @Caterina it really is and it was crowd-funded too! 7y
Caterina @ReadingEnvy A fellow South Carolinian! 😄😄 I'm at college near Charlotte, and in the summers I'm a camp counselor near Asheville, but my permanent address is still my parents' house in the Midlands, near Columbia! 7y
Caterina @Moray_Reads That's so cool!! 7y

It can be so painfully tedious to have a migraine, so I'm thankful audiobooks like this one exist! My sound sensitivity isn't quite as bad as my light sensitivity with migraines. #audiobooks #migraineandaudiobook #litsymigraineclub

Pickpick

I've loved this series since I was a kid. The audiobook is good, and it's perfect for #migraineandaudiobook nights. This is one of my favorites in the series, but it can only be truly appreciated after reading the others. The Chronicles of Narnia, and especially this book, are heavy-handed in their Christianity, but as a Christian I've never minded. I began my first theological discussions from these books! Love the stories and characters too!
