This book talks about America‘s low income & poverty housing in Milwaukee, WI. Desmond did such a thorough research, he moved into these housing areas to get to know both the tenants and landlords called ethnology (new vocabulary for me.) He shares stories of the people who have been or continue to get evicted from their homes; the how and the why and also the side of the landlords. It‘s really sad all around and reminds me how fortunate I am.
The cover is gorgeous, the story okay, her description of Milwaukee wonderful! Go Brewers and cheese curds, lol.
Not including graphic memoirs (that would be a separate list):
*Matthew Desmond's “Evicted“ IMO required reading for anyone running for public office. And in general I am not someone who typically believes in required reading.
* Ibram Kendi's “Stamped From the Beginning.“ Exhaustively researched account of the history of how racist ideas took shape here. Not an easy read, but an important one.
* Michelle McNamara's “I'll Be Gone In The Dark“ (CONT
Desmond is visiting our local bookstore tomorrow, which prompted me to pull this from my TBR pile and finally read it. It‘s unflinching and powerful. I‘m curious to see what his latest will offer.
I decided to listen to this book to give this author another try after I didn't like a different book I had read. So, I went into this with low expectations. But, it surprised me. The story drew me in from the beginning. It was predictable, but let's face it, most romance books are. This one was cute, yet I didn't find it overly sweet. There was a good balance to it.
