This is a fun little Poirot short (the actual book includes several other short stories, but they aren't particularly Christmasy, so I only read the title story this time around). Poirot reluctantly heads off to a country estate for an “old-fashioned Christmas“ - and a bit of undercover sleuthing. Poirot is very Poiroty in this one, and I quite enjoyed rereading it.

Thanks for the tag, @TheSpineView! 🥰

1. Hmm. Living in Phoenix my whole life, I wonder what I would pick ... 🤔 ... the absolute coldest wintry cabin high in the mountains of course! ❄️
2. I love winter mysteries usually at big estates, for some reason... like the short story I tagged with good ol' Hercule Poirot.

All are invited to play.

Given the on-going Canada Post strike I have had the #jolabokaflodswap package sent directly via Amazon to my match. Takes away some of the fun, but they are on their way! (And should be in gift bags.) Christmas baking prep picture for interest.

KadaGul @CuriousG Thats a Great Idea 💡 to use other shipping methods for Canadian Littens. 🫡🫶👍 3w
CuriousG @KadaGul Although not as fun as assembling and shipping, it at least gets the job done! 2w

Interesting experience listening to a Miss Marple mystery, in audio only format. In some ways the bits that are frustrating are more so, when a character is designed to be insufferable, he is now insufferable with an English accent that makes him sound like a person with a blocked nose that needs to sneeze. When the old man is being callous or the elder brother is being smarmy, I feel like it takes an age to get past the moment of unpleasantness.

Robotswithpersonality 2/? On the other hand, at 1x speed, the pace of a Marple mystery allows me to do all kinds of things with my hands and not lose focus on the mystery. Any clues are spelled out, any surmises are often repeated. While I prefer the Marple mysteries that mean her involvement throughout the story, as in They Do It With Mirrors, Lucy Aislesburrow was an enjoyable alternative, acting in Marple's stead and getting involved in intrigues of her own. 3w
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 The multiple proposals were a bit of an eye roll, as was the general attitude toward domestic servants and women, but I'd be happy to see Lucy pitching in future entries in the series. By my count I've got five left, including the one I've so far had to skip because my library doesn't have A Pocket Full of Rye. Hopefully, interlibrary loan service will come back in the new year. Until then, on to the next! 3w

I loved the ridiculous amount of coincidences in this mystery 😅 Still so good, and great characters that I liked getting to know. Miss Marple as always so clever

Mehso-so

I'm glad for Miss Marple's having a larger and more immediate role in this twisty mystery, because all the other characters were varying shades of irritating and unpleasant, the epilogue doesn't really make up for a good bit of the behaviour seen before hand. Nastyness and pettiness and apathy, and that's before you add in some very old attitudes and prejudices. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 Not the Miss Marple I'd recommend, though come to think of it, this series as a whole is more brain teasers with a clever old lady than a set of novels I'd promote. 🤷🏼‍♂️ ⚠️racism, slur, xenophobia, sexism 4w

Originally this quote derives from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. It is said that Agatha Christie took the title from this poem.

Another week of daily commute - another Afatha Christie audiobook. This time no Poirot, but a Miss Marple. I really like the story of the mysterious poison pen letters and their possible consequences. And of course, I did not see the end coming. 🙈

This was an interesting Miss Marple mystery. A string of hateful letters in a village lead to a suicide, but maybe it's a murder after all? I liked the main character Jerry Burton, who is new to small town life and shocked by the proceedings. He reminded me a bit of Poirot's Captain Hastings, eager to solve the mystery but a bit in over his head

“No,” said Miss Marple. “You believed what he said. It really is very dangerous to believe people. I never have for years.”

Gwenda arrives in England from New Zealand. She's been sent ahead by her husband to buy a home for them & after several days house-hunting, Gwenda happens upon the charming village of Dillmouth. There is a house there up for sale & it's perfect for Gwenda & husband, Giles, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf but Gwenda starts having strange déjà vu feelings so she escapes for a short break to some friends in London.

There she meets Miss Marple & after an outburst during a play at the theatre, Gwenda confides in her that she thinks a murder was committed in her new home. When Giles arrives he's not convinced at first but when evidence is found suggesting a mysterious disappearance around twenty years before,

OutsmartYourShelf the couple decide to investigate further despite Miss Marple's warning to 'let sleeping murder lie'.

This is my least favourite episode of the 1980s TV series with Joan Hickson in the title role, but I actually really enjoyed the book. Although this is the 5th book in the series chronologically, it wasn't published until the 1970s & you can tell there has been a distinct improvement in the flow of the story & the fact that Miss Marple is more
