Everett has a way of writing characters that just draws me in, even if the plot confuses me. I wish I could identify what it is he does because it's really effective. I really enjoyed this one, although when I got to the third story, I wondered if I'd been reading the whole thing wrong. In the first and third stories, Ogden had been in the army, and in the second, he'd been in the Marines; I assumed this was an oversight, but now I'm not sure.

ImperfectCJ I could be annoyed at having the rug pulled out from underneath me, but something about how Everett writes has me looking around for what I might have done wrong to get me confused. That speaks to the trust Everett builds between author (or at least story) and reader, I think, because I usually have no problem getting irritated at an author if I'm feeling confused. 4d

I am trying out this old novel about cliff dwellers near Los Alamos, NM. Author was a scientist who died in 1914.

After a long day helping set up the high school gym for the Grad Night party, having an awesome time subbing a prealgebra class, and playing tennis with my spouse, I have a precious few minutes to read the tagged under a lovely sky before my kid is done with orchestra rehearsal.

“Are you afraid?“ she asked in turn. She put her bowl aside and stared into my eyes.

“No,“ I said.

“Why?“

“I don't know,“ I said.

“I will tell you why,“ she smiled. “It is because good is always stronger than evil. Always remember that, Antonio. The smallest bit of good can stand against all the powers of evil in the world and it will emerge triumphant...“

Reggie I love this book so much. The part about the Golden Carp was so crazy to me as a kid. 2w

Thank you @TheSpineView for creating this fun play-card & for the tag 💕🐎📚.

1- One of my ancestral American Indigenous languages, mainly Oʼodham.

2- American English is my only language. Wasn't interested in learning Spanish (I do know a few words). The tagged has a lot of Spanish dialogue without direct translations.

Thank you @TheSpineView for creating this fun play-card 💕🐎📚.

1- I usually only read at bedtime, so at an incline 😂. My favorite is sitting in the garden or inside beside seasonal decorations or a fountain.

2- I expected a Grandma-like character, and a cozy-kind of story. This is a very serious, deeply meaningful story.

This was a quaint little book, following two catholic priests, their friendship and their missions in New Mexico and newly aquired territories of the time. I believe it's based on real missionaries which I'll have to look into.

There is aclot of casual racism sprinkled throughout, but aside from that it is pretty tame.

I am used to reading Willa Cather‘s writing about the Nebraska frontier. This was a shift reading her writing of the Southwest. It‘s time was the mid lo late 19th Century. I found it such a beautiful narrative of priests‘ lives and those of the Mexican and Native populations. I have lived and traveled through much of location she writes of and I could feel everything about it in her writing. That‘s why she is one of our best American writers.
