Bless Me, Ultima
Bless Me, Ultima | Rudolfo A. Anaya
Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will test the bonds that tie him to his people, and discover himself in the pagan past, in his father's wisdom, and in his mother's Catholicism. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world - and will nurture the birth of his soul.

Anaya‘s book had me thinking about faith and family and what does it mean to be a part of something bigger than yourself.

What a strange tale of faith and discovery. Anaya paints beautiful pictures with his words and some of the interactions between his characters read as if I‘m watching children on a playground. Yet, I‘m not quite sure what readers find so appealing about this book. A strange path to goodness, indeed.

What an insanely beautiful book! The writing was lush and loving. This coming of age story isn‘t like any that I‘ve read: it‘s a spiritual coming of age. What will Antonio become? Can he hang onto the magic that Ultima shows him? Will he ever have his questions answered? #pop23 #bookishouldhavereadinhighschool

Another classic that I think I would have gotten more out of if I had read it in school when I was much younger. Unfortunately I was a bit bored, to the point that about half through I put it down and struggled to pick it back up.
The writing is good - solid with just enough embellishment. A perfect book for an English class. The main storyline is interesting and gives much to discuss. But I did find the side characters to be extremely flat.

Excellent novel that combines New Mexican myths and Catholicism. It's a coming-of-age story about Antonio and family and a good shaman named Ultima. I can see why it has been banned before. It has some adult situations, language, and treats Catholicism kind of lightly. Still it was very well written (originally 1972), and has humor as well as poetic language, and I will most likely read more by Anaya. Had to look up some Spanish terms being used.

2️⃣
The second read for my Mexican American Literature class

This story takes places during WW2 & in New Mexico. The protagonist is a little boy who feels torn between his parents contrasting dreams for him, & has questions about God, sinning, forgiveness, & how to forge his own destiny. Ultima, a curandera, becomes his guide.
Some themes felt a little repetitive, but overall I can see why this is an iconic novel in the Chicano literary canon! ✨

Inspired by @vivastory & @BarbaraBB here are my #midyearfaves Only got it down to 12 so I‘ve done them in one collage.
I had trouble getting it down from 17! I‘ve read some amazing books this year. And it‘s surprising which books stick with you. I find it hard to explain the hold Memorial has on me for instance.
I think Bless Me Ultima is my leader for book of the year, thank you @Reggie for gifting it to me! ⬇️

Centique Child protagonists coming of age/family epics are one of my favourite things, add in a little spiritualism/magic and an environment and culture that is new to me and I‘m in book heaven. Loved it to bits. (edited) 3y
Centique And if anyone hasn‘t read Homegoing yet I highly recommend the audio read by Dominic Hoffman. Amazing 🤯 3y
vivastory What a wonderful list, Paula. Several favorites here! I plan on reading Summer Book soon. 3y

TrishB Have screenshot for a proper look 😁 3y
Ruthiella Interesting mix! Happy to see the Becky Chambers title! 😀 3y
Graywacke Great 6 months. Nervous Conditions is easily one of my favorites too (not sure I will post a list). And I loved Real Life. 3y
Centique @vivastory thank you Scott - the Summer Book is so unlike anything else. I just want to carry it round with me forever. 😍 3y
Centique @Ruthiella I‘m so mixed up with my book loves 😂😂 The Becky Chambers is just So Heart Warming and I really needed my heart warmed. I‘m going to have to reread that series soon just to give myself another dose of happy alien spaceship vibes. 3y
Centique @Graywacke I‘m so glad you loved Nervous Conditions too. I‘m looking forward to getting the next one. And Real Life - I can close my eyes and be back in that book in an instant it was so immersive. 😍 3y
Graywacke @Centique i just finished The Book of Not. Not everyone likes as much as NC, but I really enjoyed it. Real Life is so - it‘s all one thing, all of a moment and yet there is so much there‘. He wrote it in like 5 weeks. (Sorry for getting carried away here) (edited) 3y
Centique @Graywacke I‘m so glad you‘re passionate about it! That‘s so interesting that he wrote it so fast - it must have been burning inside him to get out 🙌🙌 3y
Graywacke @Centique fascinates me. I agree, he must have had it burning there. 3y
AutumnRLS I adore your edition of Homegoing. Such a beautiful cover! 3y
Centique @AutumnRLS I actually only have the audio of it so this is an image of the latest paperback edition (UK I think) 3y
BarbaraBB I loved some of your choices too (Homegoing, Memorial, The Summer Book, Remains of the Day) and I have Real life on my shelves. That it‘s a favorite of you and @Graywacke makes it a must-read for me! 3y
LeahBergen I must get to The Western Wind soon. 👍 3y

Thank you @Reggie for this book! I picked it up off the shelf while I was in a book funk and it captured me from the first sentence. I‘ve just found out that Rudolfo Ananya died last year, so RIP to a great writer.
This is a book that has been both banned and burnt. It questions the church and the existence of God - but it does so from the pure heart of a child seeking to ⬇️

Centique Understand. Antonio is a child pulled in many directions. His fathers people live the vaquero life, his mothers people are farmers. His mother wants him to be a priest, his fraternal grandmother (Ultima) shows him the wisdom of the old ways. Antonio is shaken by the evils he witnesses humans commit and tries to find some source of goodness to cleanse the earth. ⬇️ 4y
Centique The parts of the book about Ultima and her fight with the evil brujas, and the fights and intrigues amongst the school kids were captivating. The visions and contemplations around religion and good versus evil were harder going but I can see their importance. A really visual, immersive read. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 4y
Reggie Yayyy!!!! I‘m so glad you liked it! That part with the golden carp to this strictly raised Catholic was so mind blowing when I first read it. 4y

mandarchy Such a good book. I read it almost 30 years ago and remember it fondly. I may need to read it again. I want to revisit books from my past. 4y
Centique @Reggie I loved the golden carp! 🐡🐠🐟 I can‘t imagine being raised religious and love learning about it - I was raised atheist and then at 10 turned up to Sunday school having read the bible by myself (skimming the boring bits) with such hunger for the community and singing and traditions - my parents rolled their eyes. 😂😂I haven‘t been to church for a long long time - would be keen to try an LGBTQ+ accepting place if I find one. 4y
Reggie @Centique that‘s cute! I think it‘s cool when kids find it on their own. There were some great aspects to it for me like the community part. It‘s hard to deprogram when you leave it. The first time I ever did any thing with a guy I remember repeating ‘you‘re going to hell‘ to myself for a while. The only time I‘ve been to church in the last 22 years is for funerals. I subscribe to the we‘re an alien race‘s ant farm project theory. Lol 4y
Centique @Reggie yeah that sucks. You‘re too precious to have that harsh voice in your head! 💕 I had the freedom to figure my own way out as a child - not even the pastors really interrupted what was going on in my own head. That‘s probably the best way it can be. I had already internalised my mothers independence I think. But I want a book about the ant farm project of the aliens now! 😂🙌 4y
CarolynM I've just seen you're locking down again☹️ Hope the week passes quickly. Hang in there. 4y
Centique @CarolynM aargh isn‘t it frustrating? People who should‘ve isolated and didn‘t caused this one. And they went to large events. ☹️ But we‘ll do the right thing in this family anyway. Thank you so much for thinking of us! 4y
CarolynM That's really annoying! So selfish. 4y
Reggie Hey Paula, just heard you guys had an earthquake. You ok? 4y
Centique @Reggie all good! Gosh you are keeping up to date with the news! Apparently it was quite big but also it was out to sea so I don‘t think there was any damage done on land. Tsunami risk has passed too. Thank you for your caring my friend! 💕💕 4y
Reggie Every time I hear of NZ I automatically think of you. I‘m glad you guys are ok, then. ❤️ 4y
Centique @Reggie you are so kind! I think of you when I read things about the US too but NM doesn‘t get in the news much here. 4y
Centique @Reggie I just upped my rating in Goodreads to 5 stars because I‘m still thinking about this book! It has a spirit of its own this one 😍 4y
Reggie @Centique 😁What or which part came to mind? Those are the good ones. The ones that come back to visit. ❤️ (edited) 4y
Centique @Reggie oh many things. Him hearing the owl at night, dreaming of his brothers, following the river to find the golden fish, riding to his mothers family house in the wagon, following that drunk man through the snow, standing up with his father to protect Ultima. I have so many images in my head including little domestic details. 😍One day I‘ll have to visit NM and see those landscapes for real! 4y

This coming of age story had so much potential. I appreciated the cultural elements the author wove into the story of a witch who helps a young boy learn life lessons before she‘s killed. And yet the story still managed to not hold my interest completely. It‘s a controversial book and one you need to form your own opinion about.

For a book with hardcore violence, sexual harassment, silly schoolboy antics, bullying, magic, witchcraft, and even a giant golden carp god, it really could not be any more boring. The characters (except for Antonio) are 2-dimensional. The symbolism was so heavy-handed; it's as if Anaya wrote it specifically to torture high school students. Is there nothing more modern & relevant we can force our high school kids to read?

Reggie Also I was in my 2nd year in college in 1999 Las Cruces when they burned Harry Potter books just an hour away in Alamogordo and had some poor young boy say how they were protecting themselves against the devil. You just never think these things happen near you, until they do. 6y

Wow, what can I say about this book? It‘s very different, that‘s for sure. It follows Antonio (Tony) on his journey of self discovery. His mom wants him to be a catholic priest and his dad wants him to be a cowboy, but Antonio is growing up in a different time that is teaching him many things. He has to balance the teachings from his parents, the church, and Ultima (a shaman/medicine woman) to discover who he truly is. Loved it! #GAR

wanderinglynn @SexyCajun In the U.S., it‘s done more locally—it‘s school districts, it‘s libraries, it‘s communities. It happens a lot in the U.S. but it happens in other countries too. But in the U.S., there‘s not been nation-wide banning/censoring. 6y
TrishB It‘s very rare in U.K. that I‘m aware of now. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
SexyCajun @wanderinglynn thanks 😊 That book I read The Witches was banned in England. I read why it was banned but I have no idea if it‘s still banned as of now. The reason was surely funny ! 6y
rwmg Apparently certain libraries refused to stock it because they considered it misogynistic. @SexyCajun 6y

Reggie This is one of my favorite books, ever. There is a healer in here called a curandera, Ultima. She reminded me of my grandmother‘s sister, our Tia Martha. My brother was sick one time when he was small and no doctor could figure out what was wrong with him. My Tia put him on a blanket on a floor and rubbed an egg over him while saying the Hail Mary prayer. After a while she cracked the egg in a bowl which showed some ugly stuff on the yolk. She 6y
Reggie Disposed of it but told us someone had given him ojo. Which is the evil eye. He was up and around like an hour later. But there are other stories like that one about her. I also like Bless Me Ultima because there is a Golden Carp in the story that challenged everything my strict Catholic upbringing taught me. It was amazing. I hope you like it. 6y
DGRachel @Reggie Gah! I love this added story. Thank you for sharing! So far, I am really enjoying the novel. I‘m only about 40 pages into it, but the writing is gorgeous and the story is holding my interest. 🤩 6y

This is one of those gems that I missed the first time around. In some ways, it‘s comparable to To Kill A Mockingbird. 2. There are a few more I could add to my bingo card, but the tagged book is the top of the list.
3. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘ll probably go in a few times and vote for several. Today I voted for One Hundred Years Of Solitude. I‘m also working on a blog post about why I hate when people want me to choose just one favorite book.

Samplergal I want to add to my list as well. #GARBingo has been sitting quietly while I do a few other “first things first”. I have voted for To Kill a Mockingbird and Anne of Green Gables so far. 6y
ephemeralwaltz I'd love to read that blog post! I never understand how people think that's a valid question. I mean.... 6y
