The Jaguar Smile | Salman Rushdie

Pickpick

In the mid 1980s, Salman Rushdie went to #Nicaragua and talked to people about the Sandinista/Contra conflict. He chronicles the trip here. It‘s always fascinating to see the different between how real people on the ground experience something and what is reported in the news. Plus, this book has been in circulation at my library for over 35 years. So cool!

vivastory I love Rushdie but for some reason had never heard of this one! 12mo
Hooked_on_books @vivastory The only reason I found it was because of this reading challenge. Which I think is the whole point! 😉 12mo

I found this nonfiction read for #ReadingTheAmericas to be well written and for me brought #Nicaragua to life for me. This is the first time reading this author and I found his account of his time in this country eye opening and intriguing. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks @librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle I need to read this! 14mo
BarbaraBB I love Rushdie and I read this one a long time ago 14mo

Operation Nicaragua | Collin Glavac

A deep undercover US agent is tasked to get a tech CEO out of #Nicaragua alive, which along with Cuba and Russia, has interest in his survival because his tech could make or break their undercover operations. So it‘s a thriller, with lots of chases & fights. This is the second book in a trilogy, so I shouldn‘t be upset that it ended mid-action—not a cliffhanger so much as—let‘s stop the characters in the middle of a mad dash just because. ⬇️

Texreader Also I read the first book last year and have only vague memories of it. Even so, the book is good with a lot of complexity. So a soft pick. #readingtheamericas #scarathlon (& all the readathons) #batbrigade 1y

While I admired Teddy Roosevelt after reading The River of Doubt, I‘m pretty ticked off with him for his aggression in Central America. Of course the Panama Canal is vital for many reasons, not least of which its value to Panama, but to take the land by force and Roosevelt‘s aggressive Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine are reprehensible. #readingtheAmericas #Belize

Managed to fit a #AuthorAMonth book in before the end of the month, that also took me to #Nicaragua for #ReadingTheAmericas2023.

An interesting book that takes you on a voyage through Nicaragua and its people during the time of Reagan‘s Presidency.

Bookwormjillk I read this one too. It was like a time capsule. 1y
Andrew65 @Bookwormjillk Very much so, it also made me think where has the time gone! 1y
Amiable Great job with making it fit more than one challenge! 1y

I just finished the first chapter with short histories of each of the 7 countries covered in this book. It‘s really well done and I‘ve learned a ton about our neighbors to the south. So I was quite disappointed to see the short history about #Nicaragua with pretty blatant typos, referencing #CostaRica. 😟

I enjoyed this, but it didn‘t quite live up to expectations. I expected more little details about places along the way. For example, we continuously hear how difficult the Darrien Gap is going to be, but they get completely through it in a couple of 20 minute audio chapters. The friendship between Lev and Alberto was fantastic.

BarbaraBB Looking forward to it. I have a copy too. And I loved his book on Arabia (the Nile less so) 1y

I wasn‘t feeling clever enough for Rushdie‘s fiction so I decided on this non fiction account of his trip to Nicaragua in 1986. It was a very specific snapshot of a moment in time, but I appreciated it. #AuthorAMonth #ReadingTheAmericas2023

BarbaraBB I still remember this one even though I read it a long time ago 1y
