Bailedbailed

I tried very hard to get into this book, but I just couldn't. I realized when I picked it up it is short stories and I've never been able to get into short stories. I'm quite interested in learning about Norse Mythology, but the short story format just didn't work for me. I'm sure it is a great book, and this is a me problem! It was time for me to bail as I wasn't getting any reading done. I'll probably try to come back to it at some point.

dabbe #hailthebail! 🤩🤩🤩 No problem with you at all! I prefer mythology in a novel format myself, and I'm so glad some are finally coming out (like Madeline Miller's CIRCE). The short stories can be quite dry, can't they? Life's too short, and there are too many other great books out there! 2mo
Smarkies I didn't realise this was short stories... those are not my preferred format either... 😞 2mo

I'm really not finding much time to read because I've been so busy with work lately. Hope I get more than a few pages in before I fall asleep tonight 😆! I'm really looking forward to this book and I'm hoping it can transport me to a different world.

Devoured it in a day, already well into book 2. I love this take on Loki and Manny (ahem, sorry - I mean Muninn 😂) is the best side character.

Why is Loki like this?! And all the other gods, especially Odín… like, maybe try judging people by their actions, and not making your own prophecies come true by treating them poorly? ?

It‘s kind of odd to review the story when it‘s literally the mythology (as much as is known today) of a particular religion. Gaiman tells it well. I still don‘t like audiobooks; I wished I could go back and check things, and I got bored more easily than usual.

Amiable I‘m not an audiobook person, either. I manage to get through one a year, if that. 8mo
Ruthiella What I thought interesting about this collection is how uninterested the gods were in humans, compared to the Greek gods who are always messing in human affairs. 8mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Good point! The Norse gods are busy worrying about each other and the giants, I guess. 8mo

Making my annual audiobook attempt! 😂 I may switch to the ebook if/when my hold comes in, but I do like the way Neil Gaiman reads.

rachelk I recently listened to this too. I love the way he reads and just the sound of his voice. 8mo

If every author had a voice like Neil Gaiman there‘d be no work for audio performers. I could listen to him all day long! Though the retelling of ancient myths (in this case Loki, Odin, Thor, etc) isn‘t usually my thing, I thought this was very well done — exciting, cohesive stories with Gaiman‘s sense of humor and of the darkly theatrical shining through. Overall, it was a lot more fun than I expected.
