“It's not just a keel and a hull and sails; that's what a ship needs. Not what a ship is. What the Black Pearl really is, is freedom."

Jack also frees the shipload of slaves, which the Wicked Wench (turned Black Pearl) was transporting.

Pickpick

I finished this one earlier today on audio, and it seems like the perfect pick for the #soaringscores prompt. Cudjo Lewis was the last known survivor of the Atlantic slave trade when ZNH wrote this book in 1927. The audio, not to mention Zora herself in writing the book, did an excellent job maintaining the integrity of Cudjo‘s speech. Definitely a worthy read. #nowwearefree

#SoaringScores #NowWeAreFree Day 23 (or Day 1 for me): I'm jumping on this bandwagon late, but jumping on it nonetheless!

Woolf's heroine searches within and learns to free herself of the past, and of her grief. She realizes that life takes what she loves, but the memories are forever. In doing so, she finally becomes able to look to the future with certainty and move forward. I think this needs a re-read.

CrowCAH Sounds lovely! Thanks for joining Soaring Scores 🎶 3w

Plenty of gladiators in these and Boudicca trying to get the tribes free 😢
Love this series, love Boudicca and always cry at her story.

GingerAntics I‘ve only read the first two, but I‘m hoping to get the second two eventually. 3w
TrishB @GingerAntics definitely worth it 👍🏻 3w
GingerAntics I just know how it‘s going to end, and I don‘t want it to end. I love the world she‘s created. I‘ve got to see what happens with her brother. I‘m still reeling that her husband-ish guy (I know it‘s not the same as our culture) just didn‘t come back. That made me sad. 3w

TrishB @GingerAntics cried buckets at the end 😢 3w
Cinfhen Warrior Queen 👑 🥰sounds awesome 3w
GingerAntics At the end of the 4th one? That‘s what a fear!!! It‘s not like she can just go completely against history...although that could be a fun alternate universe type story. Hm. I may have to explore that a bit. 3w
CrowCAH I‘ve it when cover art stays consistent through the series! 3w
TrishB @CrowCAH it‘s just the little one that annoys me! 3w
CrowCAH @TrishB agreed! 3w
GingerAntics The digital copies have different covers and it drives me nuts. I almost don‘t want to read the ending of the series because I know I‘m not going to be happy. 3w
TrishB @GingerAntics understandable! 3w
LeahBergen I should read this series. I love Boudicca! 3w
GingerAntics @LeahBergen it‘s very well written. So we‘ll written, in fact, my brain has attempted to convince me it might end different. lol 3w
TrishB @LeahBergen you‘ll definitely cry! 3w
TrishB @GingerAntics it doesn‘t 😢 3w
GingerAntics I know. Sadly. It‘s just so well written, you have to remind yourself of that sometimes. 3w
LeahBergen I read a great big doorstopper of a novel about her by a Canadian author and yes ... 😭😭😭. 3w
LeahBergen Ah, I just saw that you‘ve read that one, too. 😆 3w
TrishB @LeahBergen I brought that one on your recommendation and cried again! I always cry when RIII dies too.... 3w
GingerAntics @TrishB @LeahBergen I‘ve added The Eagle and the Raven to my list. It looks really good. I‘ll start stalking myself for the obvious conclusion, now. lol 3w
Cathythoughts Hi Trish , a friend recommended the Boudica novels 🤔.. don‘t know them. But I see your post here coming up ... please what would be a good one to start with .. ? When you have a minute 7h
Cathythoughts Sorry Trish .. I see it hear Dreaming The Eagle seems to be the first one 👍🏻❤️ 6h
TrishB @Cathythoughts it is 👍🏻 hope you like it, I really loved this series ❤️ 6h
Cathythoughts I‘m going to try it - even though it‘s not my usual .... I‘ll let you know 👍🏻😘 6h

I have several books that explore slavery in the United States and a few that look at those individuals who fought against this evil institution. This one I had purchased because of the topic - the Underground Railroad was a network of safe houses and “conductors” who helped spirit runaway slaves to freedom. #NowWeAreFree #SoaringScores

Cinfhen True heroes 3w
CrowCAH Here in Michigan there are several houses that show the “underground railroad” used them as a stop. 3w
nichollinlove This period of time aligns with much of my favorite historical fiction/non fiction. I learn new pieces of history with every story and I am completely enamoured with the human spirits in them. I would love to hear some of your suggested reading on slavery to add to my TBR lists. 3w

Librarybelle @nichollinlove I‘ve read a lot of slavery nonfiction for various college classes. The tagged book is a good start, as it contains four biographies of former slaves. Douglass is the most well known of the four. I‘ve read Harriet Jacobs‘ story a few times...so riveting! 3w
Librarybelle @nichollinlove I‘ve yet to read the new fictional book about Harriet Tubman...I‘m interested in seeing how well it follows her story: 3w
nichollinlove I've added all 3 to both my Litsy list and my nerdier Excel doc. Thank you! I'm excited to put atleast one at the top of my list for "next". I appreciate your recommendations. 3w
Librarybelle @nichollinlove You‘re welcome! My background is in history, so I love reading history nonfiction and fiction. ❤️❤️❤️ 3w
nichollinlove ❤ I'll stay tuned for new reviews from you. 3w
