And now, some sticky toffee apple cake with my daily short story. ANCESTOR APPROVED is a great anthology so far. It‘s full of emotional truths and I love all the little connections between the stories as these kids (& one dog) converge on the powwow.

The cake recipe is available on the Food Network‘s website. They bill it as the best ever, and they ain‘t wrong. I ate it off my hummingbird plate designed by Coast Salish artist Maynard Johnny Jr.

Such a wonderful collection of tales. What I thought would be a one night read stretched into longer because a lot of the stories were thought provoking and required some logic. Good for a cozy night with a warm drink! #aesopsfables #shortstories #storycollection #fable

A bookstore opened in my town! Best day of 2023 hands down! A really good selection of books, diverse authors, solid sci-fi/fantasy, poetry and a lot of good romance authors mixed in with the fiction section. #shoplocal

This is for the short story, “The Red Convertible,” but I can guarantee the entire collection is worth reading. This story is part of Love Medicine. Erdrich is so clever in her connections. A fabulous storyteller.

Eudora Welty was born on this day in 1909.

"Edna Earle...never did get to be what you'd call a heavy thinker. Edna Earle could sit and ponder all day on how the little tail of the 'C' got through the 'L' in a Coca-Cola sign."

I‘d argue this US and Eurocentric collection is hardly the “world‘s” best. It isn‘t diverse in any way (only 3 of the 20 stories are written by women and there are few authors of color). The stories are definitely canonical and anyone with a large number of English classes in their background will have already read most of these. Ozzie has mostly let Gatsby be my reading companion but he‘s in it for these short stories.

Volt is a great collection of dark and gritty short stories by Alan Heathcock. It‘s been so long since I‘ve read this collection, I think I‘m due for another go around in the near future!
