Maeve Chambers doesn't have any special gifts. That is, until she finds a dusty old pack of tarot cards and starts giving uncannily accurate readings to everyone around her.

In the first part, a group of travelers gathers at a castle, but they‘ve lost the ability to speak. So, they take turns telling their stories through tarot cards. These felt a bit like The Canterbury Tales, and I enjoyed them. The second part had a similar setup, but the stories included more literary references and weren‘t quite as enjoyable to me.
⬇️

Daisey The author‘s note about the writing process was interesting, and the illustrated edition described seems the best way to read it.

Leniverse With Calvino I seem to always enjoy the first few pages, but then he does something relentlessly literary and slow paced where it feels like he's tossed in all the most unusual words in the thesaurus, and the effect puts me to sleep. 2w
Daisey @Leniverse Well, good to know I‘m not alone. At least I‘ll be prepared for the next one. 2w

I was really interested in this book, the magic system is unique and it's urban fantasy, but I struggled with the writing. It was hard to follow and juvenile.

Aside from two characters, the others were assholes with no personality that communicated via banter. I legit couldn't figure out who was talking sometimes, they were all the same.

There were also some things that rubbed me the wrong way including some mean jabs about weight.

📚bedside book!
It isn‘t too information heavy because Alison Davies, a practitioner for 16 years(as of 2023), crafts each of the cards into a cohesive storytelling experience.
With beautiful artwork, and #shortstories to lull yourself to sleep💤

Book 2 of 2025. This is the sequel to All Our Hidden Gifts and was just as good as the first one! If you like witchy books, this trilogy may be for you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sweet sweet urban fantasy with a big old dash of found family - inject it into my veins!

#12booksof2024 : September

The only downside to this is that it‘s a series that‘s still being written 😭

julesG We have books to look forward to. 😉 6mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, I have to get over my aversion to reading the last (and not actually the last in this case, just the last currently available) book in series and finish our buddy read 🫣😭 6mo
julesG Take your time. I am ready to listen to the audiobooks again. 😁 6mo

For other #tarot lovers/hoarders like me: how cool is this deck with story types? Isn't it gorgeous? They're sold on #etsy by Dizzy Hazel and you can buy individual cards or the full deck. Wouldn't this be a fun way to choose a next read? The universe might not give you the book you want but can now lead you to the book you need 😂
Anyway, here's the Etsy link if anyone else wants to check these out: https://shorturl.at/8M983
