#TodayILearned more about Spyware😡🤢

I haven‘t read Ronan Farrow‘s reporting on Pegasus, but this 61 minute documentary on HBO Max gives a great overview.

Tagged the book that‘s lauded as the best owner‘s manual on going off the digital grid. We‘ve got the book and someday I‘ll read it. Just doesn‘t seem like there‘s much you can do to minimize intrusions unless you‘re truly willing to give up connected tech. I‘m not there, yet.

Bookwormjillk This one might fall in the category of do I really want to know 😂 (edited) 1mo
DogMomIrene @Bookwormjillk Exactly! 😓 1mo
Suet624 Remember when we heard our tv‘s were catching what we said? I remember the Good Wife having surveillance as a running part of a season? I know ads will pop up on Facebook if I talk about a product with a friend. 1mo

DogMomIrene @Suet624 I never watched The Good Wife, but sounds like they were on top of issues. AI has really upped the creepy factor for me. I had blogged about caring for my dogs. Took a long hiatus because of life stuff, but started to get back into it… only to realize that anything I create and place online will be used to train AI. I‘m in the process of closing up my blog and related accounts. I‘ll stick to reading and just posting about books. 1mo
Suet624 Wow. That‘s a huge bummer to have to stop writing your blog. 😳😩 1mo
MemoirsForMe Oh, this book and AI give me the creeps too. Big digital brother is always watching. 😬 1mo
DogMomIrene @MemoirsForMe Yes! I‘ve been deleting various online accounts for a few weeks now. Being thoughtful about which accounts, like Litsy, that I‘ll keep. 1mo
MemoirsForMe Ditto! 1mo
Amiable I love Ronan Farrow‘s work. I saw him in person in Hartford a year or so ago —he was on a panel that discussed the dissemination of disinformation and the future of the media. 1mo
DogMomIrene @Amiable Would have loved to have heard him speak on a panel. I love his work too. I haven‘t read his books, but they‘re on the TBR. Also, would love to read a book from him on disinformation and how it spreads. 4w

#TodayILearned what a terrible leader Henry III was. That's probably why there aren't many films or books devoted to him. Still, I'm really enjoying Costain's Plantagenet series. It's very readable, even if some of the feelings and thoughts the author attributes to these real-life characters might have involved some guesswork.

kwmg40 This book was an appropriate choice for the “Cursola: Read the oldest book on your TBR“ prompt for #gottacatchemall, as it had sat on my shelves for about 40 years! @PuddleJumper 1mo

This was an amazing discovery. I‘m always in awe of writers who not only create works in different forms but can also do translations. From what I have discovered in other books, I‘m thinking Dante was not easy to translate.

rwmg A long time ago, I read her translation of the Inferno in the Penguin Classics. I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of footnotes identifying everybody they met in Hell so I never got to Purgatory and Paradise. 1mo
AnishaInkspill @rwmg 💛 💛 this is amazing,!!! sometimes the amount of notes that comes with these works it's v hard not to get lost in it.

I tried to locate Sayer's translation, I think I found it but not sure, and from what I can tell, only available as a physical book - which I like but find these easier as eBooks.

Initially doctors thought only men could have MS even though now we know women get it at much higher rates than men. In women it was just diagnosed as hysteria.

I made it out for two walks today and with this rage inducing listen I made really good time. Grrrr.

MidnightBookGirl 😡 That is both infuriating and unsurprising. 1mo

I wanted a quick audiobook to listen to this morning and decided to try this one by James Taylor. #TodayILearned how much his adolescence and family life shaped him and his music. I also had no clue about his close connection to the Beatles (I was born in a post-Beatles world). Very interesting. #NFN

tpixie Thx! ☺️ 1mo

“The fight over truth is so bitter because power flows from the dominant narrative—the power to shape both public sentiment and public policy.”

I barely made it to page two of the Prologue and found this. It resonates so well today, and for Nagle, a member of the Cherokee nation, it speaks volumes to the mistruths about the indigenous past.

Christine Man, she said that so well. I‘ve been meaning to get to this one, looking forward to your review! 1mo
Librarybelle @Christine I want to read it rather than clean! Maybe I can continue reading this afternoon. 1mo

Yesterday I took a walk in the warm sunshine and listened to the post election Pantsuit Politics podcast. I wouldn‘t say I learned anything but I do think it had a good message about moving forward. So today‘s post is a quote not a new fact.

“Together is what we have.”

cariashley I need to check out that podcast. Trying to push myself to think about moving forward instead of just wallowing. 1mo

The last two days I listened to the Cybersecurity Daily podcast. There was some interesting stuff about cybersecurity and the election.

Today I started the tagged book which is full of valuable but infuriating information. Today‘s learning/deep thought was about the Covid-19 pandemic and the response which essentially decided who deserves health.

The Secrets of the Titanic | Paul-Henri Nargeolet
post image
Pickpick

A book about the finding of the wreck of the Titanic in September 1985 & the subsequent expeditions to bring to the surface items such as dining sets, luggage & jewellery. Thousands of items have been recovered & yet so much remains down there & not even the ship's lists give the full picture of the items carried. Rumours have abounded since the beginning about millions of pounds' worth of diamonds & gold being interred in the first class safe.

OutsmartYourShelf There is also the other side of this - treating the wreck with respect due to the loss of life & having those items recovered used in museum exhibitions rather than disappear into private collections.

This was a short yet fascinating look at the expeditions carried out by Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The photographs at the end were very interesting.

OutsmartYourShelf I didn't realise until reading this book that Nargeolet was one of the men killed by the submersible implosion in 2023. This casts a melancholy pall over points of the book when the author is talking excitedly about the trips he has taken & will take including that ill-fated journey. RIP. 4🌟

#TodayILearned that the iceberg the Titanic struck weighed approx 1.5 million tonnes & would have been like hitting concrete hence the damage.

4 US Presidents have been assassinated in office & this book offers a fascinating look at what could have happened if they had survived. Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, & John F. Kennedy never got to complete their presidential terms, as each succumbed to an assassin's bullet. After examining what happened in the lead-up to their deaths & the weapons used, the author then considers what could have happened if they had lived.

OutsmartYourShelf Before starting this book, I knew the most about Lincoln & Kennedy, & had never really read anything about Garfield & McKinley. Very remiss of me, I feel. Here we are given a brief snapshot of their lives - enough to whet the appetite for reading more & there are some good starting points given in the book. The more important elements are the assassinations themselves & what happened with some searching 2mo
OutsmartYourShelf questions being asked of those involved in protecting the President in at least three of the cases. The 'what ifs' are intriguing from a purely academic standpoint, but at times they feel a little too sunshine & rainbows. Overall it is an engrossing read which asks some pertinent questions alongside 'What If?'.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Collective Ink Limited/Chronos Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

#TodayILearned that James Garfield died due to the doctors trying to save him infecting his wound rather than directly dying of the gunshot.
