Searching for Shona | Margaret J. Anderson
post image

A lonely rich girl impulsively swaps places with a girl named Shona while being evacuated because of the London Blitz, and finds a whole new family and life. One of my favorites.

Karisimo I love stories about the children‘s evacuation from London! Thanks for sharing!! 5mo
willaful @Karisimo Oh, this is such a good one. Another I read recently is The Winter is Past. (Not a children's book, but has a major child character.) It's awfully sad though. 5mo
rubyslippersreads @Karisimo @willaful This is one of my favorite genres too. Have you read 5mo
willaful @rubyslippersreads Oh, that sounds really good. 5mo
rubyslippersreads @willaful There‘s a sequel, too, though I haven‘t read it yet: 5mo

Light weekend read for a pallet cleanser. But I find that to be the case with her books.

Taking a little break from the 9/11 book (which is REALLY good) to revisit this old favorite from my childhood. It was yet another yard sale purchase my mother got for me, and I read it a lot. Anxious to see if it holds up to adult eyes.

I Am the Dog | Daniel Pinkwater

This story is relatable to kids because they find interests in animals and also like to play pretend as this character is doing.

Pickpick

I am the Dog is a realistic fiction book written by Daniel Pinkwater and illustrated by Jack E. Davis. This story is about a little boy and his dog switching roles. This teaches children about things dogs do and how they know through observations. It puts things in a new perspective for kids!

Fordham is having the young adult author AS King to the campus in Manhattan on Oct 2. Join us? She's fantastic--and Mary Higgins Clark will be there! It's free but registration in my comment. I'd love to see you! NY Litsy Meet-up? @ScientistSam @Jokila @MrBook @MommaBeja #litsymeetup

EloisaJames Link for registration (make sure they have enough cupcakes for registration!) http://bit.ly/MHC-ASKing-2017 7y
CoffeeK8 This sounds amazing! Wish I could make it, but I live a little too far away. 7y
Valink Do you teach at Fordham? I'm going to the open house there in October with my kids. My daughter is a senior and my son is a junior so the college search is in full swing! 7y

MommaBeja @EloisaJames sounds like fun. And there's cupcakes! #litsymeetup. 7y
MommaBeja @EloisaJames when I was a kid Mary Higgins Clark was one of my go to reads. 7y
brownem @EloisaJames I am dying to attend, but it's my brother who lives in NYC. #tradingplaces 7y
EloisaJames @Valink I do indeed! I'm a Shakespearean. Are you coming to the Lincoln Center campus? If you are, on a Monday or Wednesday, I could meet you guys and give you an insider's take. 7y
minkyb Oh, what a great event. Will forward this to my daughter! 7y
Jokila Ooh I might be able to make it! I don't work that Monday!! 😏 7y
EloisaJames @Jokila fabulous!! Litsy meet-up at the reception! 7y
EloisaJames @MommaBeja Mary HC is incredibly amazing. Elderly but hasn't forgotten anything! 7y
Jokila How's it feel to be called "sexy" in the NYT Book Review? ? 7y
EloisaJames @Jokila I'm not enthusiastic--but better than being told my characters aren't black enough! Grrr 7y
Jokila I couldn't believe that!!!!!!!! Much about this article's publication is unbelievable 🙄 7y
MommaBeja @EloisaJames the bigger problem is that someone green lighted the publication of that nasty piece of work. 7y
Valink We'll be at the Rose Hill campus. She wants a real "campus" feeling from whatever school she attends. She plans on visiting the NYC schools with her friends eventually. She has NYU, Manhattan, & Hunter in her list. It wouldn't surprise me if she adds the Lincoln Center campus to her list if she likes the school. 7y
EloisaJames @Valink hi there! There's a big difference between campuses in terms of feeling and kids. My daughter isn't sure which one she wants yet. 7y
Jokila @MommaBeja seriously. Someone explain to me why we needed the genre mansplained to us. What was the *point* of this piece?? 7y
MommaBeja @Jokila @EloisaJames because we are mere women without thoughts in our head. We need to be guided like sheep 🐑 by men of intellect 7y
MommaBeja @Jokila @EloisaJames I am still besides myself that his hateful spew got past multiple people through to publication. Didn't NYT think that some of those women who adore romance read the NYT or would read this article for love of the genre? Didn't believe we would not balk or fight back with intelligence? 7y
EloisaJames @MommaBeja from what I've heard, the head of the Review favors "hate reading" as she thinks it makes for more exciting reviews (or something). From that point of view, Gottlieb didn't fulfill her brief. 7y
MommaBeja @EloisaJames that's awful 7y
RLW @EloisaJames Do you know if this event be available on-line (streaming or released later)? I'm not in NYC this week, but would love to view, if possible. 7y
ScientistSam Wish I could! I have a work thing tonight. Maybe next time. 7y
EloisaJames @RLW I don't know, sorry! It depends on the speaker. 7y
RLW @EloisaJames I looked on the website but didn't see an indication. I'll check after the event and see if it's posted. Appreciate your response. Thanks. 7y
EloisaJames @Jokila it was so great seeing you—thank you for coming! That was such a great talk—I can‘t stop thinking of it. 7y
