This is a non-fiction story about a woman and her husband who spend their spare time rowing/kayaking in the high latitudes near the arctic circle. In their day jobs they are avalanche experts in Alaska. Some really interesting information about kayaking and avalanches. I can say without a doubt that while her experiences sound fascinating, I would not want to trade places and row for 10 hours straight in icy water.

Journalist Chris Stewart became fascinated by explorer Ted Morde, who traveled into #Honduras in 1940 and reportedly found the fabled Ciudad Blanca. He tells Morde‘s story beside his own travels to that country to try to find what Morde found. While I enjoyed reading this, the author‘s reasoning for going to Honduras made little sense to me. Preston‘s Lost City of the Monkey God is much better.

Librarybelle I checked out Preston‘s book from the library - looking forward to reading it! 9mo

Cosmos_Moon @JanuarieTimewalker13 it‘s a local publication with local interest stuff... news & entertainment. It‘s pretty popular here, but probably not known all over 😊 4y

Not a surprise that a woman who rowed the Atlantic for three months would be an introvert. I really appreciate her suggestion that unscripted social engagements should come with distress beacons.

Lordy, it‘s getting harder to feel like a free spirit over here in the U.S. but if Helen could do it I guess I‘ll try.

McClure, the first woman to the South Pole, decides to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Her story is filled with both beauty and terror. Her communication equipment stops working so she doesn‘t realize she‘s in the midst of several hurricanes. I couldn‘t put this book down. Her life story, interspersed throughout, provides insight into the brilliance and strength of the author. It‘s quite the read.

BookmarkTavern Wow! Sounds amazing! Stacked! 4y
Suet624 I'm counting this as my August #bookspin. I'm not sure it was the actual number selected, but it was on my bookspin list. It's been a tough month so I'm giving myself a break. :) @thearomaofbooks 4y

This book won a Christopher Award. Am I the only person not to know about this award? I‘ve read some of the titles that were awarded prizes and agree with their selection so now I have a whole new list of books to check out!

Reggie I had no idea they existed either. 4y
Suet624 @Reggie one of the books on their list is Prison Angel. It‘s an amazing biography. If you stumble upon it check it out. 4y

Usually I love books about hiking or biking long distances. Especially the AT, as I‘ve done some of it, and it‘s always been kind of a family get away spot.

For some reason this one is boring me right now. I can‘t seem to connect with it. So I‘m setting it aside for now. Maybe I‘ll try again another time.

Smrloomis Yeah, I couldn‘t get into this one either. 😕🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
ValerieAndBooks My son is hiking part of this right now! His school has freshmen pre-orientation programs that last over several days, and this was the option he chose. 5y
