Universal monster movies are the first thing I think of when I hear the word “horror”.
#teamstoker #chillingphotochallenge

AmyG I grew up watching these....Creature Feature was on Sat nights. (edited) 5y
LauraJ @AmyG they were Saturday mornings for me. And I was obsessed! 5y
AmyG Was it Sat morning? Maybe I am thinking of Chiller Theater...where in the opening the hand comes up from the dirt- out of the grave. GOOD TIMES 5y
AmyG Ha...I just googled. Creature feature had the hand. Chiller Theater was Sat night. I was obsessed, too. Those were the days. 5y

My favourite photo in the Spotlight section is of Boris Karloff in full Monster make-up genteely sipping his four o'clock tea from a china cup and saucer. Quintessentially English 😀

A bit fuzzy as I couldn't get a good angle on it, but this is the portrait of Elsa Lanchester - The Bride of Frankenstein - in the National Portrait Gallery. In the same room are portraits of Conan Doyle, Aldous Huxley and (my favourite and profile pic!) Mervyn Peake.

Pickpick

This isn't an encyclopedic, in-depth history of the studio and films: it's not for scholars. It *is* a fun overview, delightful and entertaining and has sent me back, with a renewed interest and appreciation, for the films which as a kid I used to stay up late to watch on TV, lights out, tucked under a blanket on the sofa, wondering if I, though pure of heart, might turn into a wolf when the wolfbane bloomed when the autumn moon was bright! 🐺🌚

Leftcoastzen Did you read Fangoria magazine? 6y
TrishB @Leftcoastzen Fangoria 😁💕 6y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen I think I read a few - I didn't regularly get it, though. I think there was a slightly earlier UK published horror mag I used to read more often as one of my friend's older brother used to get it 6y

Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen Quick internet search - it was probably The House of Hammer magazine. 6y
saresmoore Ahh! I love it! 6y
Leftcoastzen @Bookwomble I will have to look that one up. I had a friend when I was young who collected Fangoria ,horror comics, and I think the other one was Famous Monsters. I‘d get my fix when I visited their house. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Bookwomble @TrishB House of Hammer looks very similar!👹🙀 6y
Bookwomble @saresmoore It's a lovely big format book with lots of cool pictures! 6y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen Famous Monsters of Filmland, I think. Another was just called Hammer Horror, which appears to be the film mag I was thinking of, whereas House of Hammer looks like it might have been a comic with new stories in based on the movie properties. 6y
