Pickpick

This is an attempt to use William Faulkner to explain southern culture. The idea is maybe the unspoken, Faulkner being known for not telling us what he‘s reading about. The Civil War and its mythology are central to Faulkner‘s work and yet lightly touched, at best. Another oddity is that Faulkner the writer was a better person than the RL Faulkner. He was moderate on race (ie racist), but his writing demanded more human treatment.

New audiobook. Started this evening.

Terrific introduction. He explains the book as response to the Tea Party lunacy in 2010. He started researching how the contemporary US remembers the Civil War, and why those divisions then still play so prominent a role in American life and politics. He found Faulkner to be ideal for this topic, and began focusing on Faulkner from that perspective.

Lcsmcat Sounds interesting. I look forward to your review. 3mo

Soldiers' Pay | William Faulkner

Pickpick

This was my first book i read this year, finished a month ago but haven‘t been posting on Litsy. Sorry all. Faulkner‘s 1st, from 1926. American soldiers returning home to small town Georgia, to wives, fiancés, hopes and consequence. It‘s an odd book, faulkner putting in impressionists touches, toying a little with the rules of prose. Maybe inconsequential, maybe romantic, sex charged or thoughtful. I liked this problem piece, anyway.

Indulged in some literary treats on my 40th b-day trip to New Orleans. Went to the Faulkner House Bookstore & we stayed at the Hotel Monteleone (on the literary landmarks registry!). The only thing I couldn‘t find was a books & booze tour - New Orleans would be a great town to tour literary landmarks with cocktails.

KatieDid927 I bought the same short story collection when I visited the Faulkner house! And I agree, I‘d love a literary tour! 3y

Heard this wonderful quote this morning and it has really stuck with me. It is saying that you have to take risks to grow, that you can't make things happen if you keep your training wheels on and stay in your comfort zone.

@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I know you like a good quote #thinkpostivebepostive

Another wild Friday night . Reading Flags in the Dust .
Temperatures above normal all week , that‘s why Arizona people ( in the hot part ) do not care for spring. In the 90s may hit 100 on Easter.😡

LeahBergen Ooph. That‘s hot. 🥵 4y
Liz_M I'm trying to decide if I'd prefer your 90 degrees to our 32 degrees (I'm so tired of cold) 🤔 4y
Leftcoastzen @Liz_M both are less than ideal.😁 4y

I love pictorial works that detail someone‘s library. That should be no surprise, and I highly suspect I‘m not the only one in this group who feels the same way! This is a collection of American classic authors‘ homes, including library images. Perfect armchair travel, though the book is a bit oversized. #LibraryOfCongress #SoaringScores
