Rocket Men by Robert Kurson - 5*

Fantastic book; miraculous feat. Jim Lovell is my hero; he joined Frank Borman, & Bill Anders for Apollo 8. Kurson does a fine job of balancing the details about this mission with the major occurrences in America and the world. The narrative is never boring and never feels forced. It occurred 2 months after I was born, so my knowledge of 1968-1972 is sparse. I remain amazed by Borman, Anders, and Lovell.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce - 3.5*

This was recommended to me because I enjoyed The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick, and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. This book is about a journey, but it is also about cancer. I don't like to read fictional books about subjects like cancer. You'll note that I didn't rate this book high or low.

The focus of this book is a man, and others as well, who happen to live longer than usual, whilst aging at a much slower rate. Albatrosses are known for their longevity, and so, too, are these special people. The story bounces around through 437 years of time, but does so with ease, always alerting the reader or listener to the location in time. I enjoy time travel tales and this fits in well among such other titles.

An excellent book. The 9th book in Bradley's Flavia series.Dogger plays a bigger role in it, because he takes the girls on a trip to take a trip. This is an example, for me, of a book that I couldn't wait to finish, but dreaded being finished because I enjoyed it so much. quote: "How could you possibly know that?" "Feminine intuition," I replied. Which was an outright lie. Feminine intuition is no more than an acceptable excuse for female brains.

St Anthony of Padua is the patron Saint of lost and stolen things. And, Anthony, of Padua Cottage becomes the Keeper of Lost Things. You'll get to know Anthony and the love of his life, Therese; Bomber and Eunice; Laura and Freddy, and of course Sunshine. Ruth Hogan intertwines three main stories, and many minor ones, into a feel-good story with a happy ending for 3 couples, ultimately.

I loved this book as much, or possibly more than the prequel. Purpose is a central theme. We are born without a specific purpose; we all seek for purpose and find meaning through that. This book focuses on the back stories of Pepper, and of the AI forthwith known as Lovecraft. The stories are intertwined in the most lovely and lively way. I desperately wanted to reach the end of the book to know what happened, while also dreading it being over.

I loved this book!

What a fun book. It documents a quirky crew on a mission that involves a time-punch (similar to L'engle's time wrinkling.) This reminded me so very much of the show FIREFLY. I could picture several of the characters as being the same as those in the show: Ashby : Mal (Nathan Fillion,) of course; Kizzy : Kaylee (Jewel Staite,) Corbin : Jayne (Adam Bladwin).

This book is a look back at the life of a fictional actress who began acting in Hollywood's Golden Age. Reid writes well and draws in her readers. The Audible is terrific. This would make a great film. I'd cast Emerald Fennell as Celia St. James. I would cast Sheryl Lee Ralph as Frankie. This book contains a storyline relating to LGBTQ issues. I'd never heard of the Stonewall Riots before this book.

While at times I was almost drawn in, the writing feels immature. It just fell flat for me. Many compare it to a favorite book of mine, but I think the other book is way out of this one's reach. Even though it is the first in a series, followed by Legendary, I will not be reading Legendary.

I homeschooled our 5 kids for many years. Then my focus switched to getting proper diagnoses and care when one of them became ill. Now that I'm less busy, I'm trying to regain all the math I've lost through the years. I found I really enjoyed it.

A jaunt that explores the adult life of Daniel Pecan Cambridge. Sure, Daniel's life is quirky. He sort of rolls through life until he decides to enter an essay contest. I throughly enjoyed this story. I won't tell more about it so that I don't spoil any details for anyone who reads this review. If you find yourself looking for a book that is easy to read and enjoyable, this might be what you're looking for.

I love the romance of the space race! I've read The Lost Moon by Jim Lovell twice. The story of the the wives of the astronauts had, astonishingly, never been told prior to this. One of the things I learned through this book is that only the marriages of the Apollo 8 astronauts managed to survive. The stress that these women were under was hardly less than the stress their husbands were under.

He tried to present us with a neatly summed up story and I think he did. I was a little less than satisfied that just as Flavia realized who this book's villain was, so too must the villain have realized that Flavia and others had figured everything out. I just felt there was a bit too little detail given about that.

I do like the way the greater story-line wrapped up, I think. I have a few niggling questions but they are minor.

How dear they all were to each other, the booksellers of Marks and Co. at #84, and Ms HH. It makes me laugh to think how similar we are; she would write to request a book from her friend in London, sooner then go 50 blocks to a NY bookstore in winter. I've been known to call or text my bff instead of going across the street and down 2 houses to avoid the Chicago winter. (Why do we live here?) This book serves as a reminder to never let things wait

"Hello. My name is Robert, and I haven't been dead for 63 days now." How's that for having your attention? 2 things: humor, and England.

This is a delightful book for those who love words and numbers.

I've read this twice. I loved our space program. I hope we return to the moon and venture to other places. This is a terrific account of the Apollo 13 amazing save!

Did you love Bridget Jones' Diary? Olivia is a young woman figuring to make her way. She has a fiesty determination to rise above her circumstances. Sometimes she gets in over her head. If only her editor would assign her something more important. You won't believe what she gets herself into.

This was an easy book to read. It was very informative.

I love this series of books. As a book lover, I just also say that I happen to love the hardcover editions of these as they are so nicely bound. This particular volume of Flavia's story includes the cliffhanger for which I was impatiently waiting!

This book follows Jacob Portman on a quest. Jacob was always close with his grandpa. His grandpa just died in his arms. What was that his grandpa said as he died? What did Jacob see just before his grandpa died? The story moves from the US to Wales. I loved the authentic vintage-found photographs throughout the book.

What fun! It's great to hear Alison's point of view.

I really enjoyed this book. It seems some people don't expect a coffee table book to be read cover-to-cover. I savor books such as this. This book is packed with information about the making of the Blockbuster BBC series. I particularly enjoyed learning about the warehouse where vintage clothing is found. What Treasures! I'd love to visit there and it Highclere Castle someday.

Arthur Pepper's wife died a year ago. He will begin donating her personal effects. He'll find among her belongings a beautiful charm bracelet he doesn't recall seeing before. He believes that if he can trace the charms to their origin he'll learn something about his wife. This becomes an adventure involving foreign countries, tigers, artists, and novelists. We do not betray the memory of a deceased love one when we go on living. Arthur lives on.

This is Andy Weir's second book, but very different from "Martian," however. It involves a Moon settlement. Jazz grew up on the Moon and is employed as a transporter. She does a bit of dirty work on the side. When she is asked to branch out further, things become more than troublesome. Disaster strikes and she and her gang must think fast to come up with a viable solution. I'm positive this will be made into a film and I'm eager for that to happen

Looks and laughter all packaged together. I find it interesting that Mary Tyler Moore is the celebrity crush of one of my brothers. Dick manages to tell his story without telling tales for the most part. The things he does tell seem to be common knowledge. He starts from his earliest memories. I like a memoir that does that. His story carries on through the date of publishing, which was 2011.

The novel opens on a young girl in South Africa, named Nombeko. Her life is full of challenges. She is an optimist, and a survivor. We follow her from South Africa to Sweden. She meets three Chinese girls who do not speak her language, the president of the People's Republic of China, twin brothers named Holler I&II, a farming countess, an angry woman, the king of Sweden, and the prime minister of Sweden. The book is a comedy of circumstances.

This is a story of a summer in which three young friends decide to draw attention to reading (and a favorite novel) by means of a prank. I don't like pranks. This one is fairly harmless, as pranks go. Ultimately, it is a book that I think many junior high students who enjoy reading would enjoy. I won't say more, so that I don't spoil the fun.

Ransom Riggs collects photos that he finds at estate sales; photos that have writing on them; it may be on the back, or the front; even a part of the photo. His inspiration was one of the first photos he purchased. He moved his photos from frames to proper albums. When he tried to move this particular photo he found this written on the back "Dorothy, Chicago, age 15, Died of Leukemia". This book highlights his favorites. Some are haunting.

It's been a while since I've read the others and it was good to revisit the comfortable town and beloved characters. There wasn't much that was earth-shattering. Father Time became a part-time bookseller and found that even with that title he could still serve the Kingdom. It serves as a good reminder that we all greet each day with the ability to be a comforter and good-deed-doer.

I enjoyed it because I love the film. I didn't learn much from it that I didn't already know, though.

I really enjoyed this book. I tend to like memoirs so it isn't surprising. Toss in that fact that it refers to a vintage book written about social advice and I was sold. Maya is a good writer for one so young. I'd love to meet her or then woman whose book affected her so greatly, Betty Cornell. I hope some of our kids will read Maya's book.
