Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children | Riggs, Ransom
Amazon.com ReviewAmazon Best Books of the Month, June 2011: As a kid, Jacob formed a special bond with his grandfather over his bizarre tales and photos of levitating girls and invisible boys. Now at 16, he is reeling from the old man's unexpected death. Then Jacob is given a mysterious letter that propels him on a journey to the remote Welsh island where his grandfather grew up. There, he finds the children from the photographs--alive and well--despite the islanders assertion that all were killed decades ago. As Jacob begins to unravel more about his grandfathers childhood, he suspects he is being trailed by a monster only he can see. A haunting and out-of-the-ordinary read, debut author Ransom Riggs first-person narration is convincing and absorbing, and every detail he draws our eye to is deftly woven into an unforgettable whole. Interspersed with photos throughout, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a truly atmospheric novel with plot twists, turns, and surprises that will delight readers of any age. A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here--one of whom was his own grandfather--were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow--impossible though it seems--they may still be alive.A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens,...

His and hers book pic I took a while back. I love being able to curl up and quietly read together. 😊

Anyway, the first book in the Miss Peregrine series definitely captured my attention with its unique characters and plot.

I liked the premise and the characters but felt that it was lacking depth. 3.7 out of 5 stars for the adventure that it conjured up in my imagination.

It bothers me that my set doesn't match but now I can finally finish this series. I stopped after A Map of Days because I knew book 5 ended on a cliffhanger and I didn't have the last book.
Now I can complete the series

3.5⭐️ I thought it was ok. It‘s a book that is out of my usual read and thought it was convoluted and lacked cohesion; felt it was all over the the place and most times while I was reading it, I didn‘t understand what was going on. It definitely is well done and the plot kept moving forward; will need a reread at some point in time. #2021 #fiction #bookreview #bookstagram #magicrealism #supernatural #fantasy

When Jacob Portman's grandfather dies under strange circumstances, Jacob then follows his grandfather's last words and goes to a mysterious island with his father, and finds an old house that was bombed in World War Two. After falling into a cairn tunnel, Jacob finds himself on the day the house was bombed, finding the children still alive and well. But there's something sinister that may have followed Jacob to the island, and it's out to get him

dawson.cossette If you like books that have mystery and supernatural powers, then this book is for you. A theme I found in the book is that sometimes the truth is sometimes stranger than fiction because in the book, Jacob thought his grandfather made up the children with powers and the monsters that hunted them, but the kids do exist and have powers. 11mo

A teenage boy trying to reconcile the wild stories his grandfather told him w/reality after his loss. A strange island where he meets odd children that give him a glimpse into his grandfather's past. And . . . Nazis? Yeah, Nazis. The author does an excellent job of weaving it all together, making the outlandish & impossible seem sane & able. I found myself accepting even the paranormal-ish aspects of the book w/o question. An enjoyable adventure!

I read this book when it first came out in my high school book club and absolutely loved it. It‘s mysterious and “peculiar” plot line, plus the added pictures in the book just gave it an extra element I liked. Recently found out there‘s a movie and a whole series!! Agh I gotta get on it. How‘s the rest of the series for those that have read it? Should I dive back in to the world of Miss Peregrine?!

Fiction: Yes, Jacob's relationship with his grandfather reminds me of the bond I have with my grandma. Jacob grew up being close with his grandfather, he admired his grandfather and the stories he told. He finds a letter addressed to someone who could help Jacob learn more about his grandfather's past. This helps me understand that like me, Jacob also wants to learn about what was life back then for our grandparents.

Finally got my books today. Time to continue the trilogies/series that I have in my shelf (except for the book on the very left. I have read that before but at the time I did, it wasn‘t mine to keep. I have the second book however, so I bought the first book last week to complete my collection.) Happy reading everyone. The internet has been devastating to look at for me lately, so I highly suggest sitting back and reading a book instead. #tbr

Finally have the boys reading everyday. It‘s been so hard to get on any kind of schedule. But they have taken over the folding and putting away of the laundry and started reading at least 1/2 hr a day. I call that a win. Oldest is reading the tagged book, brother is catching up on Wimpy Kid.

Overall, I would say I enjoyed this book. It was “peculiar” which actually made it great. It was fairly easy to follow and the storyline was well worked out. There was an element of mystery, but you get walked through when the time seems logical.

I don't know why it took me so long to take this off my shelf! I switched between the audiobook and the physical for this one and the audio was fun to listen to. Did not want to stop.

The only real flaw? Jacob and Emma. Their relationship was just a little.....wrong?

I didn't know anything about the book before going in, apart from the fact that it has strange pictures. So I was a bit baffled what direction it took. Unfortunately the protagonist is a whiny brat and, probably an unpopular opinion, the pictures take away from the story (every picture practically screams 'look what I found, now I have to make up a little story for it no matter if it fits in or not!).

HeyT Okay so I read this around the time it first came out and all my goodreads friends were like this is so amazing and I just didn't get it because like you I felt the pictures were more gimmicky and that the story was forced around them in a way that was not entirely good. 2y

Long & short: read in 2014, originally. Wanted to refresh the memory for newer books. Loved it in '14, 5 star. 2020, as a 30-something? Eh, not so much. Too many things magically worked out & felt very YA/juvenile. I wish I hadn't bought the new books, or had re-read the trilogy previously, because I probably would have donated it. ☹
