Then She Was Gone
Then She Was Gone | Lisa Jewell
THEN Ellie Mack was many things. She was fifteen. She was the youngest of three. She was her mother's golden girl. She was heading towards a perfect post-exams summer holiday, with her whole life ahead of her. And then, she was gone. NOW Laurel Mack is living in the past. It's been ten years since Ellie disappeared, and Laurel's never given up hope of finding her daughter. But now, she no longer has a choice in the matter. It's time to let go. And then one day, as she is slowly piecing her life back together, Laurel meets Floyd in a local cafe. An unexpectedly charming mathematician, he sweeps Laurel off her feet. Before she knows it she's meeting his daughters, and his youngest Poppy takes Laurel's breath away. Because Poppy is so like Ellie was at that age. And now, all those unanswered questions that have haunted Laurel come flooding back. What happened to Ellie? Where did she go? Who still has secrets to hide?

Finished this early this morning before work! A little crazy! I‘ll get it back to you as soon as I can get myself to the post office. Sarah - hope you got the book I mailed a few weeks ago - I think I forgot to post it here.
@TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea
Also - this was the last book in the round? Do we want to do another round or take a break? Im fine whichever way.

bookandbedandtea I keep meaning to ask you both about continuing, so I'm glad you brought it up @Jerdencon . I'm enjoying it, but totally understand if either of you need a break. @TheAromaofBooks 2mo
TheAromaofBooks Yes!! I did get The Last Close Call and am SO sorry I didn\'t remember to post about its arrival. I seem to have a habit of taking pictures of things and then not making the posts to go with them 😂 I\'m really enjoying our thriller/mysteries, so I am totally down for another round - this one would be Oct/Nov/Dec - or take a break - or skip December and do Oct/Nov/Jan - whatever works best!! @bookandbedandtea 2mo
Jerdencon @bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks I‘m good for Oct/nov/jan - figure we can send at the end of October and if no one is in a rush can send this book and that book at the same time to save money. I‘ll do another post with some book ideas later. Excited for another round! (edited) 2mo

I'm enjoying some porch time before the heat gets oppressive and noticing that our flowers are acting like their blooming season is over. 😕 Which is a bummer and seems early, even for Colorado. Anyway, I'm starting this today. It sounds good @TheAromaofBooks and @Jerdencon

TheAromaofBooks Hope you enjoy it!! Everything is blooming/ripening early here and it's making me wonder if we're heading into a hard winter. 3mo
bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks That was a wild and crazy story!! 🤯 I've also started wondering if it's going to be a hard winter. The only things we have still blooming are the coneflowers and salvia. Well, and the mums that are just getting started. I'm particularly bummed about that rose bush. It's usually absolutely covered in blooms from May to September, even into October some years, but all we've had the last month are 1 or 2 flowers. 😕 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Has it been very dry out there? We started with a wet spring - May and June we were above average rainfall. But we've had almost nothing for almost a month now, which is very unusual for us. Scattered storms around but very hit or miss - mostly miss here at our house. So I'm not sure if that's also hastening things along! It's definitely shortening my flowers!!! 3mo

bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks Yes, it's been very dry. It's known for being dry here, of course, but we've had higher than average temps with lower than average precipitation since early June. I do hope that fall brings rain again and that we make up for the shortfall in snow this winter. 3mo
Jerdencon The book came today! Excited to read it! 3mo

5✨ This book was so good! A young teen disappears without a trace. Her family is torn apart for various reasons. What really happened is so dark and twisted it‘s hard to put down. I was constantly in a state of shock, and the desire to discover what happened was overwhelming. Very well written with suspense, extreme dislike to one of the characters, and an unsettled feeling that makes you crave more. #FableBC

15 year old Ellie Mack disappears on her way to the library. 10 years later her fractured family is still looking for answers. The book alternates between the present and the time leading up to the disappearance. Told from multiple viewpoints, but mostly Mom‘s. Despite figuring out fairly early what happened, the tension was palpable throughout my read. Very Creepy!

Laurel‘s precious daughter Noelle disappears and the most expected family discord follows. Despair, growth, love, heartache, and redemption all in one. 👍🏻 Definitely would have been a quick read if things hadn‘t been hectic. 🖤

In dealing with an overwhelming loss of her daughter, Laurel meets Floyd which feels so right then she meets Poppy, his daughter, her resemblance to her missing daughter Ellie is remarkable, it must be a coincidence, but is it! Who is Floyd and why is Poppy the spitting image of Ellie. What does Laurel uncover about Ellie‘s disappearance, was Floyd involved in Ellie‘s disappearance or did she just runaway!

This book was slow at the beginning, but then it got too good to put down. I knew nothing about this mystery/thriller when I started it, but I‘m glad I went in blind - it was a great surprise. I ultimately described the end of the book as a beautiful disaster. The characters are so well written , you are cheering for some and hate others. You keep trying to figure it out, but I wasn‘t prepared for the reveals.

Does it ever mention how Ellie got pregnant with poppy in the first place ?

5feet.of.fury I remember Noelle drugged her and …I gues turkey basted her… I don‘t think it went into specifics… with sperm she got off the internet. 2y
BookishGirl06 @5feet.of.fury I just finished it and that just seems so weird to me. What did she knock her out again and insert sperm into her privates or something? I don‘t think she could sneak it into her food cause I don‘t think that‘s how it works 2y

An amazing thriller by Lisa Jewell.

Ellie Mack, 15, went missing in this suspenseful psychological thriller. In her book Then She Was Gone, Lisa Jewell emphasizes less on what actually happened to Ellie and more on how and why she disappeared, as well as the consequences for her family.

This was such a devastating story. Laurel has a teenage daughter that simply vanishes one day with out any answers or leads. The story moves on with Laurel not being able to come to terms with the disappearance of Ellie. This book moved quickly and was rather dark. I found the ending to be a little predictable, but I still drank it all up.

THEN SHE WAS GONE by Lisa Jewell

Ten years after Laurel‘s daughter, Ellie, goes missing, she meets someone special and begins to piece her life back together, and repair the bonds with her remaining family. But alas, along the way of healing, there may be unexpected clues as to what happened to Ellie…

Full of subtle foreshadowing and a few good twists, this is a bizarre, enthralling tale that will rip your heart out—and then maybe put it back📖

This one managed to keep me guessing until (almost) the end. And I actually didn't mind the shifting points of view. I enjoyed getting into some of the other character's heads. It really rounded out the narrative for me. I suppose there is some content in this book that could be triggering for some. Wasn't an issue for me, but I thought I'd put it out there for anyone considering giving it a read. All in all, I enjoyed it.
