An intense book that too many people in the US live through. Thomas weaves culture, pain, truth, hope, and humor into this YA story.
This is an excellent book that is well written with believable characters, and good pacing of story.

This was an absolute amazing book, it reflected things I am going through right now and has amplified the saying, don't take things for granted, for me personally. It can happen to anyone, no matter how far away it may seem. I highly suggest this invigorating limitless eyeopening novel.

The hate u give is a great and amazing book. It gives a shocking insight to what happens to many people. It makes you really think about life and how quickly it can end. These stories may seem far away from you but this can happen to anyone and the book gives an amazing story whether it is fiction or not.

This book is not only worth ALL of the awards and hype around it, if not far more. This is a true MUST READ. I am left speechless because I have so much to say and so much I‘m feeling. STACK IT. READ IT. Regardless of what your favorite genre of books you prefer, this one is universal. Also, if you have the chance to listen to it on Audible, the narrator.... WOW.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I agree and the movie was great!!! 1w

What an amazing book! It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me angry, it made me think. I can see why it‘s become so popular, and I can‘t wait to read more from Thomas! I ended up reading via audiobook because I‘ve been having a hard time getting through printed books, and the narrator was fantastic!

GypsyKat I‘m having a hard time with print books too lately. I‘m rereading Harry Potter and I‘m about half and half audiobook and print reading. 1w
Merethebookgal @GypsyKat I love the Harry Potter audiobooks! Yeah, my attention span has been crap recently, so listening to audiobooks while I do something else has been easier than just sitting and reading. 2d

Reading this book left me feeling like Ariana Grande., I've got no tears left to cry. Which is why I procrastinated on reading it for as long as I could, because I knew it would destroy me. What an important book. I think it should be a compulsory read in high schools. Five stars. Ten if that was a thing.

This is a book that everyone should read. It‘s needs to be required reading in high schools. I‘m so bummed I waited so long to read it but I‘m so so glad I finally did.

It‘s not an easy read. It will challenge everyone and that‘s important.

I have no other words.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️First book of 2020 and it was a great one. I did audio for this one and the narrator is fantastic. One of my favorite readers.

A heavy emotional book but a necessary one unfortunately. Police shootings are gun violence and we need to address it. The book does a great job in tackling this subject.

britt_brooke Bahni Turpin is my favorite narrator! 1mo
krayoncolorz @britt_brooke so so good. It was right up there with the Help audio! 1mo
britt_brooke @krayoncolorz Oh yes, The Help is one of the best audio productions I‘ve listened to. And of course, Turpin is one of the narrators. 💚 1mo

This book hurts!
I avoided it for so long as I was put off by all the hype: so, it turns out the hype is well-deserved. I don't think there's anything else I can say that hasn't already been said. I just want to thank Angie Thomas for her generosity in letting me into a world I otherwise only catch glimpses of from the outside.

Reggie I love what the mom tells her about doing the right thing no matter what, what the nurse had told her, I love that her mom tells her about sometimes you have to let go of friends. I don‘t think teenage girls get that message enough, especially when the friend is toxic. I love that Angie made Starr‘s boyfriend white. She came at you from all angles. This book is one of my favorite in the past years. Sooo good. Also, her dad‘s Harry Potter theory. 2mo

Red is my favorite color but green is definitely up there, as far as colors I love go. I decided to make a #redandgreenstack for Christmas but the book choices make this look incredibly un-Christmas-y. 😂 If you made a stack with some of your favorite colors, what colors would you choose?

marleed I have so much fun stacking my books by color as a way for my collection to not look like an isle at Borders. My front room shelves are staked by color for a monthly theme. It lets me ‘play‘ my books. Because I change out my front room shelves, my reading room lined shelves are constantly morphing. In Jan I‘ll go for a gray/white/purple snow theme. 2mo

YA Fiction

The reason I chose this book was because I've heard a lot about the impactful messages it has about racism, protesting and young black teens in this generation. I wanted to read it due to its point of views on those topics.
Starr Carter is in between her poor neighbourhood and wealthy school. Reality hits her when her bestfriend gets shot by a police officer. For once, she wants her voice to be heard.

Genre: Young Adult Fiction

Date Completed: October 16, 2019

How did you choose this book: I recently found this while cleaning my room and realized I never read it. I saw the movie, and decided to compare the book and film with each other.

Write a brief summary of the novel; who was the protagonist; what was his/her problem and how was the problem resolved?

sofia.aniela Starr Carter is a 16 year old black girl that attended a party in her neighbourhood, Garden Heights. She reunites with her old friends, but people with guns roll around and start a conflict. Quick to get away, Starr and her friend Khalil leave the party. As they were driving around, a police car comes after them and asks them for the proper papers and ID. 2mo
sofia.aniela Starr has always been taught to respect the police, but Khalil, being the stubborn one, decides to “play around” and not give in for the first few questions. Once he obeyed the officer, he does something that scares the officer, causing him to shoot. This was the moment Khalil died. The rest of this book talks about the injustice and racism that goes on in society. Although a white police man committed murder, he did not get arrested. 2mo
sofia.aniela This book gives people a perspective of what it is like to be in this kind of situation, and how people from the opposite side react. (edited) 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m super late to the game, but this definitely lives up to the hype! I recently read On the Come Up, too, and appreciate Thomas‘s creation of Garden Heights. I hope she continues to set stories there; continues to open our eyes. Gaining perspective is vital.

Reggie The part where the mother tells her about her birth and what the nurse tells her about doing the right thing. I loved that. Also I appreciated what the mother had to say about how sometimes you have to let a friend go. I don‘t think girls get that message enough. (edited) 3mo
