HOW HAD MRS. OLINSKI CHOSEN her sixth-grade Academic Bowl team? She had a number of answers. But were any of them true? How had she really chosen Noah and Nadia and Ethan and Julian? And why did they make such a good team? It was a surprise to a lot of people when Mrs. Olinski's team won the sixth-grade Academic Bowl contest at Epiphany Middle School. It was an even bigger surprise when they beat the seventh grade and the eighth grade, too. And when they went on to even greater victories, everyone began to ask: How did it happen? It happened at least partly because Noah had been the best man (quite by accident) at the wedding of Ethan's grandmother and Nadia's grandfather. It happened because Nadia discovered that she could not let a lot of baby turtles die. It happened when Ethan could not let Julian face disaster alone. And it happened because Julian valued something important in himself and saw in the other three something he also valued. Mrs. Olinski, returning to teaching after having been injured in an automobile accident, found that her Academic Bowl team became her answer to finding confidence and success. What she did not know, at least at first, was that her team knew more than she did the answer to why they had been chosen. This is a tale about a team, a class, a school, a series of contests and, set in the midst of this, four jewel-like short stories -- one for each of the team members -- that ask questions and demonstrate surprising answers.

This book has been on my TBR for a while because I liked From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I enjoyed this one, but I felt it was somewhat disjointed with the separate stories and too short of a time with all the characters together. I was expecting a bit more about the preparation and actual competition of the team.

I'm still unwinding from a rough spring 🌸. One of the times I closed my library to substitute, I found this book on a teacher's desk. I thought I had already read it, but started reading it to be sure. I just finished it last night. It's a 3 hour book and it took me a month! I like this author's sense of humor, but I hate the literary license that allows full stops to generate drama: ie. could. you. just. stop.

Roary47 I read this in junior high and never finished it (assigned reading) as an adult I went back and just loved the memories it flooded back maybe more than the book. Rough junior high, but my teacher and this story really helped me through. 💛 1y
mandarchy @Roary47 I was really lucky to love most of what was assigned to me. Most of it was really old, though. I was out of college by the time this came out. It's funny lately, I've been thinking about how long ago something was, and then stretching to consider the same amount of time further back. The most recent thing I read in middle school was Narnia. It was as old as this book is now! 1y

This RF, LC, John Newbery Medal award winning book would be an ideal addition to third-fifth grade classrooms! The theme of kindness from different points of views will draw readers in. The reader journeys through the Academic Bowl that “The Souls” are competing in, while learning how the group came into each other‘s lives. This book works best in a LC setting; Edutopia provides the benefits of LC‘s, and how to get one started.

Betrinag https://www.edutopia.org/blog/literature-circles-how-to-and-reasons-why-elena-ag... UDL principle 8.3 concerning collaboration and community, as well as EL 2 concerning the promotion of cooperation in small groups, can be easily met with this book. 4y
DrSpalding Your summaries are concise yet comprehensive. What a wonderful book selection to offer as a choice for book club/literature circle. 4y

The tale of four sixth graders going through a journey to win the Academic Bowl.

This was my favorite book when I was a kid. I would read it over and over again until one day, my book somehow found it's way into the washing machine. This is not that book but a replacement that has gone with me through the years.

I like how Konigsburg writes her characters, but there is quite a bit in this book that would not be considered pc today and was downright cringe-worthy at times. Like the kids' academic bowl team using a noose as their victory symbol, which made sense (I guess?) in context and was not being used in a racist way, but wow that is seriously tone deaf and inappropriate.

I had really hoped to finish this last night, but it wasn‘t to be. So, first book of 2019 instead!

A nice story about a sixth-grade academic bowl team, enjoyable and quick. It‘s not as good as From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler, but I liked it.

Fourth finish for #24B42019, and I‘ve met my goal for time. Everything else is bonus.

The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg. Genre: RF, Award: Newbery Gold, Teaching Strategy: LC, IR. This book is amazing! It took me a few chapters to get into it but once I did I could not put it down. It‘s about 4 students who are all connected which you find out how throughout the book. This book hits some serious topics and is a GREAT read! #UCFLAE3414SP18

Jeffersleighann I think this would be a great literature circle book because the students would be able to bring their own background knowledge to the table to help others understand the book. This book also shines a light on divorce, bullying, remarriage, parents death, etc. This would be great book for students to come together as a community. EL 38. Assign short readings for homework. 7y

KaitlynN I really like the artwork you shared! For some reason I‘m drawn to it. Like I would put a giant print of this up in my house. I think the themes you mentioned might tie strong emotions to this artwork and I think those connections are interesting. When kids can articulate where they see topics and feeling reflected in art it proves they are thinking deeply about whatever the topic is! (edited) 7y

I have been searching for books (that I actually want to read) set near where I live since before I started the BookRiot reading challenge this year. It was a nice surprise to find that each of these very different books of my recent reading is set predominantly in South Florida. One might even call it serendipity. 😊

"When word go out that Mrs. Olinski's homeroom had a chance of beating the eighth grade, kids from the other two sixth grades started signaling a thumbs-up sign when passing a team member in the hall. They raised their arms high overhead and lifted their thumbs like a forest of small apostrophes at the ends of their closed fists."

saresmoore @CherylDeFranceschi She's the perfect example of what I appreciate about good children's writing. There's no condescension or loss of complexity to the story or characters, even when the words are simpler. 8y

I picked this up to try as a Newbery Award Winner for the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge. I'm so glad I did!

So far, I like it better than From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, which is my dad's favorite childhood book, but one I didn't love.

Cortg My daughter had to read Mixed Up Files in 5th grade. She was not a fan. She proceeded to write the teacher an anonymous letter about how she has disliked his book selections and gave him a list of books that the class might enjoy more! 8y

I simply adore this book. It's unlike any book meant for middle graders that I've read. I find it sophisticated. Four sixth graders were brought together to compete in the school‘s Academic Bowl quiz by their teacher. A story of harmony between the four who are peculiarly linked. A story of acceptance, friendship & the strange bonds of a small community. A light, enjoyable read, yet one where you can take away life lessons. #LitsyAtoZ #24in48

I fell in love with this book in the 5th grade, so it's definitely my Fun Friday book! This was the first book I remember loving (beside The Babysitter's Club series), and it's a beautifully poignant story that weaves together the lives of a group of students and their teacher.🐢😀📚
