#UCFLae3414F17 Hatchet is a Newbery award winning RF text, written by Gary Paulsen. The story is about a boy named Brain Robeson. He is on his way to visit his father when his plane crashes. Brian learns to survive in the wilderness, by himself, with only a hatchet. He learns to make fire, avoid the dangers of the wilderness, and find food. He is faced with terrible weather, much adventure, and his own secrets. He eventually realizes that the

JordanHull the plane had a survival kit and gets rescued. This page turning novel will make for a captivating LC book.

http://mrsbridge.webs.com/passagepicker.htm

Above is a link to Mrs. Bridge‘s Hatchet LC website. She has a digital version of the book available for student use. She has role descriptions and an online tool for each role. Students can turn in their roles assignment online. Teachers could use this as a model for their own LC or print it
7y
JordanHull and adapt it for their own classroom. This is a great UDL 4.1 and 4.2 model because it allows students various methods to read the book and access to tools and technology. During LC discussion I would use ESOL 22, giving adequate wait time for ELL‘s so that their voice is heard, and they are able to participate in discussions. 7y
juliek1 I loved this book when we read it in school. I think I'm maybe in the minority, but it was a fun read! 7y

#UCFLae3414F17 Where the Wild Things Are is a classic F tale written by Maurice Sendak. The story focuses on a young boy named Max. Max gets sent to his room without supper after putting on his wolf suit and wreaking havoc on his house. When Max goes to his room it is transformed into a Jungle and Max sails off to where the wild things are. He becomes king of the wild things, but ultimately misses home and leaves. Rules | Cynthia Lord

#UCFLae3414F17 Rules is a touching RF text, written by Cynthia Lord. The book was a recipient of a Newbery award. The story depicts a young 13-year-old girl, Catherine, and her brother David who has autism. The story starts with Catherine babysitting David and we soon realize that this is a common occurrence. Throughout the story Catherine teaches David rules like “chew with your mouth closed” and “a peach is not a funny-looking apple.” Catherine

JordanHull meets another boy named Jason at David‘s OT and becomes friends with him. Her friend Kristi volunteers with them, but she is mean to Jason due to her friendship with Ryan. Ryan bullies David and Jason and Catherine must learn who her real friends are. Eventually Jason gets Catherine to dance in front of him, breaking one of her many rules. This and other situation cause her to change her frigid look on rules. This story would be a great LC book.

7y
JordanHull The link above takes you to an audio version of the text. For struggling readers this could be helpful for following on and increased comprehension. Having access to this online tool after or during reading will accomplish ESOL 21 and provide the student with an audio version to listen to slower or repeatedly if necessary. This would also accomplish UDL 1.2, offering different auditory information.

7y

#UCFLae3414F17 Quackers is a F text written by Liz Wong. The story is about a cat named Quackers, who hilariously thinks he‘s a duck. He thinks he‘s a duck because he lives at the pond, and everyone else is a duck. He feels like he doesn‘t belong and tells how he hates duckweed and getting wet. Quackers meets a “strange duck” named Mittens, who helps him realize who he really is… a cat. Later, he begins to miss the pond and realizes that he can

JordanHull whoever he wants to be. This adorable story would make a great brain breakfast RA.

https://growingbookbybook.com/quackers-activities/

The site above lists numerous activities that teachers can do to enhance the story with their children. I had the pleasure of seeing some student center activities first hand at read for the record 2017. I would

JordanHull encourage think, pair, and share method for student discussion, utilizing ESOL 10. The story has a beautiful meaning, but has to be discovered and allowing the students to figure it out together will make the message more meaningful. By facilitating discussion and allowing discovery with student center activity you will also accomplish UDL 8.3. 7y

#UCFLae3414F17 Don‘t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is a F book and a recipient of the Caldecott seal, written by Mo Willems. The story is about a Pigeon who desperately wants to drive the bus when the driver steps out. He begs and pleads with the audience and trees to convince them to let him drive the bus. Ultimately the driver comes back, and the Pigeon turns his attention to another vehicle. This book is a terrific RA or S, and Mo Willems would

The link above goes to the authors page where you can meet The Pigeon and find out more information like his birthday and best friends. The site has a section that teaches you how to draw the Pigeon and also allows teachers to print out honorary certificates to commemorate the students on not letting the Pigeon drive the bus. #UCFLae3414F17 The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is a captivating HF, by AVI. The story details the journey of Charlotte Doyle, a 13-year-old girl, on a voyage from Rhode Island to England in 1832. The families she was supposed to travel with cancel at the last minute and she goes on the trip alone. She ends us on a ship with a treacherous captain and evil crew and she must prove her innocence while on trial for murder. She ends up realizing

JordanHull her love for sailing and takes out on another adventure once her terrorizing one was over. The book has ship details, terminology, and times in the back to create more sailors like Charlotte. This story would be a great LC book and would stir some great conversation.

The link above provides a before, during, and after reading guide. It helps the students organize their
7y
JordanHull thoughts and the plot with graphic organizers and guiding questions. I would implement ESOL 5 and provide prior knowledge of sea life and terminology. The back of the book has a great glossary and diagrams of ships that would prove helpful to all students. I would refer to the diagrams and glossary and use UDL 3.3 to keep students visualizing and processing the text. 7y
JordanD I actually just saw this book the other day- it looked so interesting! I'll definitely have to get my hands on it now! I love how the resource you used lays everything out. 7y

#UCFLae3414F17 She Persisted is a collection of biographies written by Chelsea Clinton. The book details the trials and tribulations of many historically significant women, like Helen Keller, Clara Lemlich, and Oprah Winfrey. The story is beautifully depicted and inspires women and all people to keep going to be persistent and to accomplish great things that may have never been done before. The book is a great RA, SR, and GR.

I would use ESOL 4

JordanHull and connect at least one of the women to the student on a personal level. The book tells the story of women from varying backgrounds so it would be useful to use UDL 2.4 to promote a greater understanding of different languages and cultures.

#UCFLae3414F17 Flora and the Ostrich is a RF book by Molly Idle. It is one of many Flora books. The rest of the series is just pictures with no text, this one is different. This book uses Flora to depict opposites, usually between her and the Ostrich. It is a cute and engaging picture book, with many flip pages that show the Ostrich doing the opposite of whatever Flora is doing. This book would be great for RA‘s and CR.

I would use ESOL 9 and

JordanHull and have the student make a T-chart with the main word on one side and its opposite on the other. For UDL 6.3 the chart would help them manage the new information and they could add to it with opposites they see in everyday life.

#UCFLae3414F17 The Giving Tree is a Poetry book written by Shel Silverstein. The Giving Tree is about a boy and a tree. The boy loves the tree and plays on the tree and this makes the tree happy. As the boy grows up he needs more than just a play place and the tree gives him everything she can to make him happy. The more she gives the less she has and eventually she is just a stump. The boy, now a man, tells the tree that all he needs is a quiet

JordanHull place to sit. This makes the tree, now only a stump, very happy. The story is a great tale of generosity and love and would be a terrific RT or S. Shel Silverstein would make for a terrific AS too.

I would use ESOL 16 by allowing the student to listen to one of the many online readings of the story and also allow them choice in the topic for a poetry writing assignment after the story has been read. This would also incorporate UDL 2.5.

#UCFLae3414F17 Wonder is a heartwarming page turner written by R.J. Palacio. This RF text tells the story of young Auggie Pullman‘s transition from homeschooling to a real classroom. August has a physical facial deformity, he lives with his mom, dad, sister and dog. The reader follows August as he makes real friendships, while dealing with bullies and constant weird looks. The author varies the viewpoint and allows the reader to see the story from

JordanHull other main characters perspectives. The story teaches kindness, acceptance, and personal growth and should be in every classroom.

This book would be a great LC or IR text. I would use ESOL strategy 10 so that when the perspective does change the students can discuss what is happening and they can recognize how the point of view switches for greater understanding.

#UCFLAE3414F17 One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia is a historical fiction text that has won the Newbery Award, Coretta Scott King Award, Scott O‘Dell Award, and was a National Book Award Finalist. The story follows three sisters as they reunite with the mother that abandoned them.

JordanHull The story is set in Oakland, California in the 1960‘s. Throughout their journey they meet many black panthers and learn about their real culture, not just what is portrayed in the news. They learn about the movement and end up actively participating while somewhat building a relationship with their estranged mother, Cecile a.k.a. Nzilla.
7y
JordanHull This book could be used in the classroom for LC, IR or SR. It could also be used for DR, the protest scene with the poetry reading would make a great re-enactment. EL strategies 5 and 13 would be beneficial for the overall comprehension of the text. I would preview each chapter and teaching relevant vocabulary and background knowledge. Then review each chapter after the student has read them and I would answer any questions the student may have. 7y
JordanHull UDL strategy 3.1 would help ELL‘s and the entire class understand the historical content in the text. The students need background knowledge on the Black Panther movement and how it has been portrayed historically. They would be able to compare the books culture versus the historical culture of the movement. Oakland has a rich history and exploring that would help the students accurately picture the setting. 7y
