My Antonia (Revised) | Willa Cather

This is the year of finding out that I really love frontier books (#NewsoftheWorld), not that this matters with such writing. Willa Cather paints affectionate, striking portraits without ever being sentimental as Jim Burden remembers his childhood on the Nebraska plains and one character in particular, Antonia. #WillaCather #MyAntonia

Sing, Unburied, Sing | Jesmyn Ward

Matilda only recs #NationalBookAward winners. I feel like this is a must read in 2017. Amongst the tragedy, the addiction, and and the legacy of Jim Crowe, this is a story about people that deeply love one another. #jesmynward #singunburiedsing

Midnight's Children | Salman Rushdie

It was an exhausting read, but I couldn‘t quite let it go. So I read one chapter a day and that allowed me to process the density of the novel and an unfamiliar (to me) history. It‘s particularly wonderful if you‘re interested in Partition, the history of #India and #Pakistan‘s conflict, etc. Altogether, I‘m glad I read it. It‘s an epic for sure. #salmanrushdie #midnightschildren #magicalrealism

Reservoir 13 | Jon McGregor

I loved the cyclical natural elements of this book - foxes, cow parsley, badgers, nettles - as much as the characters themselves. It‘s not a thriller...more like a long, creeping portrait of an English village and how the loss of a young girl impacts the community. #resevoir13 #jonmcgregor

The End of the Affair | Graham Greene

Lust, guilt, jealousy, love & hate tangled together, along with a searing search for God. This book is perfect, and I had to interrupt my gardening for the final chapter. #modernclassic #theEndoftheAffair #GrahamGreene

Startling. Bizarre. An apt cover! #MurielSpark can get under my skin in a way that only she and #ShirleyJackson can. My kind of #Halloween read. #TheDriversSeat

Golden Hill | Francis Spufford

In all likelihood, this is my favorite book of 2017. I read the last sentence in a NYC cab and exclaimed "damn!" It's an adventure, a comedy and an insightful look at what colonial #NewYork might've been like while a British colony with its heavy Dutch influence and ideas of liberty bubbling to the surface long before #1776. The writing is exquisite with long, beautiful sentences that demand one's full attention. And the ending! #GoldenHill

Rcoco I agree! So far for me, my favorite fiction read of the year. 7y
