I just finished this one and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most importantly, I didn‘t figure out who the killer was until the point the author revealed the identity. Too often murder/mystery books are predictable. Not this one! The scenario was believable and the plot twists were great. Give it a read if you have time in your reading schedule. I don‘t think you‘ll be disappointed!

I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting to read about life during the 1600s in a small German town. This story follows the story of a crime solving hangman (I had no idea how they were so hated), his daughter, and the town doctor. The book that I had was a new type of Kindle version that was animated. That kind of threw me for a loop so be prepared for that if you get it. All in all, it was good read and fun!

I was a little skeptical that I‘d like this book when I was first starting out. The format is a little disjointed, jumping from narrator to narrator, and often has a stream of consciousness feeling to the story. I really enjoyed the way suspense built as more of the characters revealed their actions and how it became a perfect storm for what happened to, Anna, the victim. All in all, this was a fast and fun read.

Loved this book! I really enjoy crime novels and this one hit all the high notes. Great story, it‘s light on the gore factor that you expect with a serial killer novel, so don‘t worry about that. Very excited to read the next books in this series.

I got this book as part of the Kindle First Books program. It wasn‘t the worst book, just not a story that really held my attention. Still, I wanted to see how the story resolved so I stuck it out.

I read the first book in this series, The Butterfly Garden, almost a year ago. I had no idea there were more books until I stumbled onto this one. I really enjoyed both books in this series and look forward to the next book coming out soon.

Book 2 in a series. This wasn‘t quite as good as the first book. The storyline kind of gets bogged down in the middle of the book, but it eventually pulls free and the story moves along nicely after that. I‘m looking forward to reading book 3 in this series and seeing what happens next with these characters.

I really enjoyed this book. Great storyline and a fun world to immerse yourself in.

I have to be honest, I bailed on this book on my first try. I feel like the author didn‘t give enough background in the beginning to explain the world he had created and how people got blessed with powers. If you slog through the first 100 pages or so, it gets better. I enjoyed the characters he created once I understood what was happening and how things worked. I‘m looking forward to the continuation of this story.

I really enjoyed this book! It appears to be the first in a series. It has action, likable characters, and a good storyline. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes suspenseful crime novels. It is very similar to Bones (the tv show). All in all, a great read!

This is my first Stephen King book and I honestly wasn't all that impressed. I was expecting a darker story with some sort of supernatural element. Honestly, this seemed like a book that anyone could have written. I was expecting something entirely different (and much better) from the "king" of supernatural thrillers.

A depressing, but pretty accurate description of current events.

If you like historical fiction novels, or Victorian-lite novels, then this one might be for you. There are some slow spots that take some time get through- mostly building backstory. All in all, it's a pretty good read with some interesting and quirky characters.

Unfortunately, this is all too true in our world.

This was a great read! I appreciate the author making the story believable and creating a nontypical hero. It's nice to see the nerd win sometimes! The author does abruptly drop the story at the end of the book and I was a little annoyed until I saw there is a second book coming in March 2018(?). This is a fast, interesting read that keeps you guessing. I'd definitely recommend!

I got this book through the Amazon first books program. I did enjoy this book, so don't let the so-so rating discourage you. This storyline could be ripped from the headlines (and probably was). The ending doesn't resolve as fully as I would have liked. Instead, the author leaves it open for another book. This is a nice read if you aren't looking for something too deep. Would be great for travel. It just left me wanting more details.

This book starts in the present and backtracks through history to give backstory through first person accounts from different points of view. The first two hundred pages had me wondering what in the actual hell was going on. If you like tension and suspense, then this will be one you enjoy. Just be prepared for quirky story presentation. Also has religious themes if you're put off by that.

Book 3 - continuation of characters and storyline of books 1 and 2. At the ending of the book the plot line is resolved satisfactorily. The entire series is a good, fast read. I think most would enjoy it if you like fantasy novels. The author was an avid student of history during college and pulls many plot lines from real-life historical events that are set in the worlds he has created.

Book 2 - This is a continuation of the first book. Same characters and storyline.

I don't remember exactly who put me on to this writer. This is book one of a trilogy (his favorite format) and I enjoyed immersing myself in the world he has created. It's a fast read, but enjoyable nonetheless. Would be good/appropriate for young readers too.

Does anyone here use a service like Kindle Unlimited to read books? I've been using KU. The only issue I've found is that the selection is super limited. Any other suggestions?

My best friend, Jenni, let me read this advance reader copy she had gotten. While the story has a very quick beginning that pulls the reader in, by the midway point of this book, the reader just wants answers. The plot gets complicated fast and it never gets easier to unravel. I think the author should have ordered this book's plot line a little better so the reader's brain isn't so fried at the end of the book.

This book is a sequel to "The Alienist." It is often hard for second books to live up to the first, and this one, while not quite as interesting in storyline, was well done. The plot does lag in some spots, but I was kept guessing as to how they would eventually resolve the conflict.

I finished a re-read of the The Alienist today. Imagine my surprise when I found out there was a second book with the same cast of characters! I'm starting this one tonight. Let's hope it lives up to its predecessor.
