There is a patch of ground in Tennessee dedicated to the science of death, where human remains lie exposed to be studied for their secrets. The real-life scientist who founded the "Body Farm" has broken cold cases and revolutionized forensics . . . and now he spins an astonishing tale inspired by his own experiences. Renowned anthropologist Dr. Bill Brockton has spent his career surrounded by death at the Body Farm. Now he's being called upon to help solve a baffling puzzle in a remote mountain community. The mummified corpse of a young woman dead for thirty years has been discovered in a cave, the body bizarrely preserved and transformed by the environment's unique chemistry. But Brockton's investigation is threatening to open old wounds among an insular people who won't forget or forgive. And a long-buried secret prematurely exposed could inflame Brockton's own guiltand the dangerous hostility of bitter enemies determined to see him fail . . . by any means necessary. With Fascinating Insider Information on the Body Farm! From Publishers Weekly The pseudonymous Bass makes a successful first foray into fiction. The author is actually the writing team of Dr. Bill Bass, the forensic anthropologist who founded the legendary Body Farm (Tennessee's experimental laboratory devoted to the study of the way human corpses decompose), and Jon Jefferson, a journalist and filmmaker. Their new sleuth, Dr. Bill Brockton, is obviously based on Dr. Bass, sharing his first name, initials and his status as founder of the Body Farm. (The two coauthored Death's Acre, a nonfiction account of that macabre if scientifically valuable facility.) Still recovering from the emotional devastation of his wife's death, Dr. Brockton stumbles across a mummified female body, and his passion for the truth enmeshes him in a probe that verifies rumors of local corruption. His particular skills are vital to identifying the corpse as well as those who might have been motivated to kill the victim decades earlier. The pacing and action bode well for this crime series, though mystery fans who enjoy whodunits might hope that subsequent books pose more of a puzzle. 4/5 Even though I (mostly) figured out the twist about halfway through, I was still surprised by the turns it took to get there. I really enjoyed the writing style and characters. #booklystats

Insomnia at its finest. Thank goodness I have Panda to keep my company. #dogsoflitsy

I am really loving this book so far. The main character is easy to fall for. 😍 And although it‘s filled with technical jargon occasionally, it‘s not overwhelming or hard to understand; which is appreciated.

#sorrynotsorry I don‘t feel like working. All those numbers make me dizzy today. I‘m just going to dig into this book and enjoy some silence before all the weekend chaos begins. 😍

So, this book was pretty good. My first by this author. I wished for the second book on PaperbackSwap but I don't see them getting a copy so I'm going to cave and buy book two 😂

I enjoyed this month #booksandbrewsclub selection. I just skimmed over the really bloody parts. Mostly I attend to support Local Fat Toad Brewery. The fact that good beer is being served in Mayes County Oklahoma is a miracle in itself. Today's choice was a Blueberry Kolsch made with local berries. Plus how awesome is it that it's sponsored by our Library. We have the coolest librarians #librariesrock 🍺📚🤓

Johanna414 If my library held book club in a brewery, I‘d totally attend! 6y

Mehso-so

Author is coming to my local library this summer. In preparation Library Director pick first in series for our monthly #booksandbrewsclub meeting. I wish I could say I loved it. I did really enjoy main character but all the blood and gore and accompanying forensic science discussion is just not for me.

I really enjoyed this book! It appears to be the first in a series. It has action, likable characters, and a good storyline. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes suspenseful crime novels. It is very similar to Bones (the tv show). All in all, a great read!

TrishB I think I'm on about number 7 so far 👍 6y

Guys, I am so overwhelmed with how thoughtful my Secret Santa gift is. Missy went above and beyond in picking out things she knew I would like. Chocolate, Starbucks, bath bombs, and books?!? Could it be anymore perfect?? Thank you so much Missy!! I love everything. ❤🎅🏼🎁🎄#secretsantagoespostal #wintersolsticebookexchange

Reviewsbylola Also, I haven't read either book and I loved reading your notes about why you chose them. I will have to have my dad read A Killing in the Hills when I'm done because it sounds right up his alley and he also works in West Virginia a few days a week (Wheeling), so I think he will enjoy it as well!! @MMenefee 7y
