The Almost Sisters
The Almost Sisters: A Novel | Joshilyn Jackson
With empathy, grace, humor, and piercing insight, the author of gods in Alabama pens a powerful, emotionally resonant novel of the South that confronts the truth about privilege, family, and the distinctions between perception and reality---the stories we tell ourselves about our origins and who we really are.
Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually level-headed graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman.
It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. Shes having a baby boyan unexpected but not unhappy development in the thirty-eight year-olds life. But before Leia can break the news of her impending single-motherhood (including the fact that her baby is biracial) to her conventional, Southern family, her step-sister Rachels marriage implodes. Worse, she learns her beloved ninety-year-old grandmother, Birchie, is losing her mind, and shes been hiding her dementia with the help of Wattie, her best friend since girlhood.
Leia returns to Alabama to put her grandmothers affairs in order, clean out the big Victorian that has been in the Birch family for generations, and tell her family that shes pregnant. Yet just when Leia thinks shes got it all under control, she learns that illness is not the only thing Birchies been hiding. Tucked in the attic is a dangerous secret with roots that reach all the way back to the Civil War. Its exposure threatens the familys freedom and future, and it will change everything about how Leia sees herself and her sister, her son and his missing father, and the world she thinks she knows.

Don‘t let this cover fool ya! Very different from the story. The story is awesome! I laughed out loud, cried, got pissed and many more. The author knows how to draw you in and make this so relatable on the light side of a lot of the sensitive subjects in our lives. I promise you won‘t regret picking this book up.

A friend recommended this to me last summer. I looked it up, saw the cover, and said nah. Then after hearing it recommended again on a podcast, I grabbed it at the library thinking I'd give it a few pages. Wow! This is another "Don't judge a book by its cover" example. It was a beautiful story. I fell in love with the characters, especially Birchie and Wattie. The story is powerful, uplifting, and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Bklover Now that I read the description, you‘re right! It sounds good. But that cover is awful! Stacked it anyway! 2y
IndoorDame The cover really is awful! I ignored the copy I owned for ages because of it, but also ended up loving it once I got over that and actually read it. 2y
dabbe Makes me feel good to know that it's still important to tell students to NOT judge a book by its cover--ever! 🤣 2y

I forgot to take a picture before returning this one to the library. I had not heard of this author before my bookclub chose it. The writing was a bit repetitive in some parts but it was a good story overall with a good mix of humor and drama. It was a light, quick read and yet it had some heavier topics to discuss; a one night stand that leads to a pregnancy, dementia, racism and marriage were some of the topics covered in this southern story.

LiteraryinPA I read several by this author trying to replicate how much I enjoyed this one! The others were fine but this remains my favorite by her. 3y
Cortg @LiteraryinLawrence Good to know! I think we were all happy with the book though only the reader that chose the book was familiar with the author. I do enjoy being introduced to 'new to me' authors through book club. 💝 3y

I listened to the audio and it was ok. It held my interest more the further I got into it. The author herself read it, and she did a good job. I could have done without the entire plot of Leia‘s graphic novel, though; that bored me, and there was too much of it. But overall, I‘m calling this one “ok”. Nothing overly exciting or special, but it wasn‘t bad

Crazeedi Tagged book sounds really good, I have the other marked as tbr... 4y
Cinfhen I‘ve heard good things about this book @Soubhiville I‘m looking forward to reading it 4y
Cinfhen The cover is REALLY striking @Crazeedi for 4y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen agree! and covers always draw me in 4y
TrishB I think I was just as jealous of the thought of a friend calling round! 4y
Cinfhen We are actually in a nationwide lockdown @TrishB so it was REALLY SURPRISING to have a friend stop by 🙊I think most people are SO FRUSTRATED that they are finding small ways to buck the system 4y
TrishB Same here 👍🏻 not always so small here though. People are very frustrated and fed up. Are your schools open? 4y
Cinfhen Only preschool and schools that operate special needs programs @TrishB 4y
Cinfhen It‘s ridiculous @TrishB this is the THIRD lockdown which is ONLY CRIPPLING small businesses and other establishments! It doesn‘t seem to be stopping the infection rate 4y
TrishB I think they don‘t work now because people are breaking them and as soon as you open up again they shoot up. I don‘t know what the solution is other than keeping our fingers crossed the vaccine works and can get rolled out quickly. 4y
Cinfhen Yeah, it‘s true @TrishB everyone who breaks the lockdown potentially breaks the barrier of protection/ meanwhile Israel has vaccinated almost 500,000 people already 😱 4y
TrishB That‘s great news 👍🏻 hopefully world wide soon. 4y
emilyhaldi I‘m with you Cindy- the continued breakdowns and consequent small business closings are heartbreaking to watch 💔 They don‘t seem to be making a bit of difference in infection rates- California a prime example!! Thank goodness for the vaccine 🙏🏻 4y
Cinfhen It‘s so sad @emilyhaldi SO many smaller establishments I used to frequent had to shutter after the FIRST major shutdown/ now we‘re in our THIRD😭😭😭 my little Ukrainian seamstress is out of business, my Georgian dry cleaner is gone, and the sweetest Israeli man who owned a little cafe also had to close down. 4y
emilyhaldi Omg I can‘t take it 😭😭😭 that makes me equally enraged and so so sad. It all feels so unnecessary...😰 4y
Cinfhen Right @emilyhaldi these were hard working people who came to another country for a better life and opportunities and now they lost their livelihood 💔💔💔I realize the Government is trying to save lives but at what cost ? It‘s devastating. 4y

My December #bookspin book is also one of my favorites of the year, so I‘m going to play along with @Andrew65 ‘s #12BooksOf2020 too. I loved this so much, richly drawn characters including lovable main character, Leia, a comic book artist who gets knocked up by “Batman” at a fan con. When she travels to Alabama to help her beloved grandmother whose health is declining, she sees the south in a whole new light. It‘s both lighthearted and profound.

I have almost two dozen books with “sister” in the title in my stacks & on my Kindle. When I winnowed it down to the plural “sisters” & possessive “sister‘s” I had 12 so that‘s what I‘m going with. I have 8 of the 12 so far. (The Mud Sisters, The Romanov Sisters, The Story Sisters & The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters are still #TBR.)

Other than the cover (which I wish incorporated Violet and Violence, Leia‘s comic characters. Or at least a woman sketching... something more artistic!) I really enjoyed this book. I don‘t think I had heard of Joshilyn Jackson before. Not only is she a great writer, she narrated the audio version herself, and she did a great job!

I‘m really enjoying this so far, but I have to point out I feel like this cover, while pretty, is a terrible match for the book. The main character is a highly successful comic book artist, with all the geekiness you‘d expect to come with that. This cover doesn‘t reflect that at all.

Are there any book covers that you feel misrepresent their books?

IndoorDame Totally agree about this cover! I really liked this book, but I can‘t reconcile them at all! I actually really like the cover too and when I scroll through my audible bookshelf I always get excited about this until I finally remember that I‘ve already read it. 5y
tracey38 I find it so annoying when a cover doesn't reflect the storyline at all. I know I have read a couple books where this has happened but it's been awhile and I can't remember what they were. 5y
Hooked_on_books I read a book recently wherein the cover had absolutely nothing to do with the story. And I didn‘t love the book, so that didn‘t help, either. 5y

I really enjoyed this multi dimensional story my first by this author. I loved the main character and the elements do her graphic novel in the book but also the relationship between her and her grandmother (I‘m a sucker for cross generational friendships). Some of the themes were a little too obvious but it was still a really enjoyable read. D I shall look for more by this author !

This was between a pick and a so-so for me. At times the conservative southern politics in this bothered me too much & it was read by the author (which I always love) but she slipped in and out of a deep southern accent in a way that struck me as unintentional & distracting. When I did manage to stay engrossed in the story the characters were drawn well & realistically, the dialogue was funny, & it was interesting to hear a dark story told lightly

IndoorDame Also I love this cover but it‘s not really reflective of the story... 6y

Great book. The Almost Sisters is a mix of family, southern history, love, and racial injustice with some "nerd alert" humor thrown in. It didn't get a full five stars because I almost felt like it was too long but, at the same time, it was missing something. Definitely worth reading.
