This Savage Song | Victoria Schwab
Theres no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villainsand friends or enemieswith the future of their home at stake. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor.Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided citya city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocentbut hes one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, whos just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers Augusts secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives. In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every sideincluding the monsters within.

I finished my #friendrecchallenge last month. Things were pretty meh this year. I bailed on Limit and the other 2 that I did finish I didn‘t really care for either which surprised me. Oh well, I‘d still like to give this a go again next year. It‘s fun seeing what my friends pick and why they pick it. I‘ll probably institute a page limit next time though. I don‘t really want to get stuck reading any chunksters that don‘t appeal to me again.🤷🏽‍♀️

BarbaraBB Seems an interesting challenge! Are they IRL friends or Litsy ones? (edited) 1mo
shadowspeak17 @BarbaraBB One‘s an online friend, but he‘s not on Litsy unfortunately. The other two are irl friends. 1mo

One of my absolute favorite young adult fantasy series. This was a fantastic read and good and bad. The city of full of horrible monsters all created from horrible human acts of violence. If you Murder someone, a monster is created from that violencd. This was fanatic and will always hold a place on my shelf

Oh man this was SUCH a good book. I LOVED the characters and world building so much. It follows two teen protagonists — one a human girl with a twisted family and the other a monster in the guise of a human. I did this as an audiobook and thought the reading was very enjoyable. Great read to kick off Spooktober! 3 points (participation + theme). Also covers “character dies” for #ScaryScavengerHunt #TeamStoker #Scarathlon

Book not pictured cause it is an audio book, but in order to maximize my time for the #Scarathlon I am forgoing most of my podcast listening for more reading in the car.

I will however post an updated stack, in order, of what I PLAN to read for this Spooky 🎃 Month. Current tangible book is on top and it has zombies in it, so a strong start!

Getting my TBR pile together for upcoming #Scarathlon Top picture is an audiobook and then my haul from the library—as well as my notebook where I will try to keep track of all the contest and things. Two of the books I grabbed on a whim cause they were graphic novels about ghosts so I figure they will be quick reads! Can‘t wait #TeamStoker

As I expected, this wasn‘t really my thing. The writing was fine and it was a quick read and I was pleased to find that there was no romance. But I also found it pretty predictable, the characters got on my nerves more often than not, and I just didn‘t care much about them. In the end, I don‘t totally hate that I read this, but I don‘t plan on giving book two a go either. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Just started this for my #friendrecchallenge. It honestly doesn‘t really sound like my thing, but I‘m trying to keep an open mind. 😅 I‘m still reading Limit as well, so I‘ve got my last two friend rec books going at once. Limit has been putting me off a bit though with its descriptions of female characters. 😒 Not a great sign, and I‘ve still got A LOT to go...

3/5⭐ Interesting concept and world. I like that it's dark and didn't devolve into insta-romance (or any romance, for that matter). I'm not sure about the whole sinful souls thing: by which/whose standards are actions deemed crimes, that they would turn a soul red? Why the hell is the self-defense action of one of the main characters at the end a sin? Not on board with that.

What a unique take on monsters! I wasn't sure if I was going to like this one, but I needed something to listen to at work and it was available... and wow! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this unique world.

One thing I really appreciated was that there was no info dump... the world building was given drip by drip.

Plus, who doesn't love a good story where you're unsure if the greater evil is the monsters... or the humans...

Right from the start I loved Kate. She‘s feisty and I LOVE feisty female leads. My heart went out to August so I was invested in him. I feel like some of my questions weren‘t answered & that‘s why I wasn‘t blown away. What was The Phenomenon? What types of crimes create monsters? Just murder? Or do other heinous crimes create them? If they do, how on earth is the world not overran with monsters. Maybe the true monsters are the humans themselves.

HELP! Littens, this pre teen is reading (and eating) me out of house and home. I‘m at a loss as to what to funnel his way for him to read. He‘s (a young and innocent minded) 12 year old with a 12th grade reading level. Can any of y‘all recommend books with a male main character with little to no cussing or sexy time.
Thank you all in advance!

ravenlee Anne McCaffrey‘s Dragonriders of Pern series; Brian Jacques‘ Redwall series; Ender‘s Game? (can‘t personally vouch for that one); Ursula LeGuon‘s Wizard of Earthsea series 12mo
cathysaid Maybe this is a place to start? The end of the article mentions some resources for further investigation. https://bookpage.com/the-book-case/20248-15-books-advanced-middle-school-readers 12mo
BookFreakOut The Ranger's Apprentice series has a lot of books and a few companion series so that could be good if he reads fast, the first isn't particularly long but they get bigger and the characters grow up while maintaining fully clean content. Also love the Redwall books. I see someone suggested Ender's Game, which is my favorite book but uh not innocent at all 12mo
LiteraryinLititz Has he read anything by Jason Reynolds? He has written several awesome books with teenage male main characters: All American Boys, Ghost, etc. They often deal with race and class issues but I don‘t picture them having romance. Also, how about The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime? I also agree with the suggestion of Agatha Christie books with Poirot and Hastings in them. (edited) 12mo

LOVE this book. I smiled when the first quote of the book came from the main character in her book Vicious (from Victor Vale). This book had an interesting premise about where the monsters come from – unlike other reads; the monsters do not have a long and romantic mythology. The protagonists are teenagers but this is not a YA book. It is dark and there is not any romance. Once the action starts, it doesn‘t stop.

This is a book about monsters. Dark Monsters. Scary Monsters. Humans who walk that thin borderline of being a monster themselves. Like most of Schwab's work, that I've read, I found it to be a deep look at what it means to be human and the darkness that lurks in all of us. The good news is; we can always choose the light.
