Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd by Holly Black, Cecil Castellucci

Appel discusses 79 problems in contemporary medical ethics, such as allocation of scarce medical resources, the right to privacy, the right to die, the ethics of medical research, or even the future possibility of human clones. Appel often cites examples of real-life situations.

It's readable, engaging, informative, and entertaining. Its only real deficiency is its lack of depth, but that is an unavoidable sacrifice for breadth and accessibility.

Absolutely fantastic. Anyone who plans to build something to be used by another human should read this. It gives good, useful views on error, the process of goal-directed action, and usability generally.

The information was good, but the book could have been cut by 50-75% without losing anything important. I don't need inspirational stories of other people succeeding with this journaling method, I need practical advice for how to succeed with it myself. The book does have plenty of that, but unless you feel you need a book-length intro to productivity techniques, just read the Bullet Journal website and you'll get the gist of it.

Trek to Madworld | Stephen Goldin

Goldin's writing is good, but the plot is only so-so. Enowil seems a pretty clear progenitor of Q, and if this story were written today you could pretty well just replace "Enowil" and "Organian" with "Q" and, well, "Q", without anyone suspecting anything was amiss.

A rather routine story. Haldeman cannot have been giving it his best effort with this one.

The Price of the Phoenix | Sondra Marshak, Myrna Culbreath
Panpan

Dreadful. Marshak and Culbreath are, as usual, much too pleased with themselves and wed to their odd idea of masculinity and gender roles. There's a good reason he ideas behind their fiction went out of style in the seventies. If you want very thinly veiled slash fic without much plot to get in the way, this is your book. Otherwise, skip it.

Not bad, though probably not quite as shocking as when it was published.

Tons of great information about the evolution of SF. I came away with pages and pages of stories to add to my TBR pile, and a lot of insight, too.

A bunch of mostly soulless stories. Readable, sure, but not worth going out of your way for.

A nice book of comics about sci-fi, cons, and especially Trek. Lots of fun stuff by Phil Foglio and others.

A moderately long poem in several sections, but not a terribly good one. It has a few nice bits, but I can't recommend it.

Spock, Messiah! | Theodore R Cogswell

I've heard people say that this is the worst #StarTrek book, and I can believe it. There are a few major problems with the story, but if you just accept those, then it's a decent enough adventure. Unfortunately, the characters are mishandled and the attitude toward women is mind-boggling. That's just too many problems to forgive.

Never after | Rebecca Lickiss
Pickpick

Never After thoroughly mixes the stories of Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Cinderella, and a few others into a pleasant mish-mash of fairy tale trials and tribulations. It was a little slow at times, and the bits with the wizards could have been compressed substantially. The fact that they never accomplished anything was kind of the point, but that didn't make it any more exciting. Still, it was fun, and the book didn't overstay its welcome.

This was a pleasant read. It relates a number of anecdotes about the happenings and mishaps behind the scenes of the 1972--1976 Trek cons. It was nice to peer a little deeper into things, and (thanks to the photos section) put some faces to the names I knew from their contributions to fanzines. For someone interested in the history of Trek, this makes some nice light reading.

This one is a fun little children's book. It tells a number of fairly self-contained episodes about the protagonist, India Opal Buloni, coming to know and empathize with the people in her new town, and wraps everything up with a nice bow on it at the end when everyone comes together for a party.

Spock, Messiah! | Theodore R Cogswell

I'm a few chapters into this one, and so far... not so good. The authors don't seem to have any grasp of the characters. #StarTrek lit isn't always great--I don't expect an uninterrupted series of masterpieces--but some minimal level of competence in the subject isn't so much to ask, surely.

Honeymoon in Hell | Fredric Brown
Mehso-so

This collection of #scifi #shortstories from the fifties is passable, but most of the stories either are short jokes or are meant to have twist endings but are in fact very predictable. "Arena" and the titular "Honeymoon in Hell" were enjoyable, and "And the Gods Laughed" wasn't bad.

"I Never" is a bit better, but you can spot the Cyrano de Bergerac plot coming a mile away.

Another story down. This one was okay, but a bit hard to read because the protagonist thinks it's a dandy idea to get drunk and wave around a gun, and the story takes no position on this.

Another story down. This one was okay, but super-predictable, and with very heavy-handed foreshadowing. The #scifi references just amounted to so much name-dropping, too. The worst sin was that most of the characters' interactions happened 'off-screen'. Show up, mention some scifi words, fade to black. Don't just tell us 'they became friends', show it happening!

Letters to Star trek | Susan Sackett

Mehso-so

It was interesting enough to me, but probably only #StarTrek super-fans (like me!) would find this book worthwhile in 2018. A bit of history, a bit of contemplation of the human condition, and a bit of "kids say the darndest things", this was a quick read.

Star Trek Log Eight | Alan Dean Foster
post image
Mehso-so

Finished another #StarTrek book. Foster expands on the stories he's adapting, which is nice. This one is a little problematic, though. Our heroes spend the second half of the book tracking and capturing a mysterious creature. Kirk wonders more than once if the creature may be intelligent, but doesn't let any ethical concerns stop him from capturing it so it can be permanently installed as an attraction in an alien zoo. Entertaining, but flawed.

So far, I've read only the first story in this one: "Once you're a Jedi, you're a Jedi all the way". It's kind of mediocre--it all seems rather superficial. You could tell the same story without the geeky backdrop and it'd be about the same. Here's hoping the other stories are better.

A book of short stories. "The Lady of the Unicorn" was good, but the others were average at best.

Pretty good. It didn't feel very original, but maybe everyone else was copying this manga. There are a few really nice lines, too.
