Fleishman Is in Trouble
Fleishman Is in Trouble: A Novel | Taffy Brodesser-Akner
A finely observed, timely exploration of marriage, divorce, and the bewildering dynamics of ambition from one of the most exciting writers working todayfor readers of Jonathan Franzen, Lauren Groff, and Tom Perrotta Toby Fleishman thought he knew what to expect when he and his wife of almost fifteen years separated: weekends and every other holiday with the kids, some residual bitterness, the occasional moment of tension in their co-parenting negotiations. He could not have predicted that one day, in the middle of his summer of sexual emancipation, Rachel would just drop their two children off at his place and simply not return. He had been working so hard to find equilibrium in his single life. The winds of his optimism, long dormant, had finally begun to pick up. Now this. As Toby tries to figure out where Rachel has gone, all while juggling his patients at the hospital, his never-ending parental duties, and his new dating appassisted sexual popularity, his tidy narrative of the spurned husband with the too-ambitious wife is his sole consolation. But if Toby ever wants to truly understand what happened to Rachel and to his marriage, he is going to have to consider that maybe he never saw things all that clearly in the first place. A searing, utterly unvarnished debut, Fleishman Is in Trouble is an insightful, unsettling, often hilarious exploration of a culture trying to navigate the fault lines of marriagean institution that has proven to be worthy of both our great wariness and our great hope. Advance praise for Fleishman Is in Trouble Blisteringly funny, feverishly smart, heartbreaking, and true, Fleishman Is in Trouble is an essential read for anyone whos wondered how to navigate loving (and hating) the people we choose.Cynthia DAprix Sweeney, author of The Nest

Throughout this book, I constantly and fiercely flipped from loving it to hating it, and I very nearly bailed halfway. So I‘m really surprised to find myself saying this, but I think this might be one of the best books I‘ve read all year! The last 70 pages (Rachel‘s section) were phenomenal and I finally got it. It‘s layered, clever and really insightful. Highly recommend...even if I did spend most of my time eye rolling Fleishman!

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m intrigued! 1d
BarbaraBB Such an intriguing review! I can‘t wait to read this one! 1d

How do I feel about this? It‘s undoubtedly well written and the storyline is compelling. Yet I am conflicted. As a satire of marriage and upper middle class middle age woes it‘s en point and unflinchingly honest. However much of the story is written in ‘might as well be first person‘ which I found really difficult especially as we hit the last fifth of the books which felt a little rushed. #litsypartyofone #mrbook1inamillion

For this week‘s #bookreport, I finished Testaments on 🎧 and it ended up a so-so for me. I finished and enjoyed the new Sarah Bailey (an 🇦🇺 author) and am now in the middle of Fleishman and King. I‘ve put Fleishman down for a few days - it‘s just not pulling me in. BUT, all the 🌟 for King‘s writing memoir. Brilliant, funny and just what I need to get my creativity flowing as I finish a rather dull paper for work.

rachelk Yes! ‘On Writing: Memoir of the Craft‘ is brilliant! 6d
JennyM @rachelk he is so smart and so funny! It‘s a fantastic read! 6d
Cinfhen I‘ve heard others say that Fleishman is a tough start. I‘ll be curious to see if anything changes next week. Thanks for sharing your weekly reads!!!! 6d

TrishB I might wait for Fleishman on a kindle deal. 6d
JennyM @Cinfhen @trishb don‘t let me put you off cos it‘s probably more me than the book. But I do feel like I‘m reading something different to what‘s been hyped. I‘m not getting all the nuances or the characters at all...I‘m mainly doing a lot of eye rolling, so it‘s probably just me being a grump 😬 (edited) 6d
JennyM @Hooked_on_books I wish I‘d read it years ago! 6d
Cathythoughts I loved Fleishman... but I didn‘t have any preconceived idea of it ... & I missed the hype 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6d
JennyM @Cathythoughts I‘m gonna give it another try in a day or too. You and I usually have similar taste in books, so you have me wanting to keep going. It hasn‘t helped reading it while being away and tired, so I do think my headspace is a factor in it. X 5d

I‘m away with work for a few days, which means lots of time peopling and me generally finding myself #crave (ing) for quiet time with my book (which is very good after a not so sure start). But my room is lovely and, if you squint hard enough, you can see kangaroos sun-baking on the lawn past the water 🦘 #movember

squirrelbrain Ugh, peopling... looks a lovely place though! 1w
Cinfhen that‘s pretty fantastic/ getting to see Kangaroos lounging in the sun!!! This book is HIGH up on my radar so I‘ll be very curious to see your review (edited) 1w
JennyM @squirrelbrain it‘s tiring being sociable all day. And then it‘s drinks and dinner, and I just want my bed and book 😩 1w

JennyM @Cinfhen they are super friendly 🦘as well. The book is good, but it took me a little getting used to. It felt a bit contrived and gimeky for the first 50 pages. But then it seemed to settle, and now I‘m really enjoying it. I will be so interested to see how you find it. 1w
TrishB Enjoy your break 😁 know that feeling! 1w
Cathythoughts Lovely pic ! I hope you enjoy the book ... I really did. As for being sociable all day & THEN dinner & drinks .... I hear you. Some people thrive on it ... I‘m with you , I find it exhausting .. and over the years I‘ve got better at excusing myself early 👍❤️ 1w
Lizpixie We stayed at a campground at Lake Conjola on the south coast of NSW a few years ago, the place was crawling with kangaroos, possums, birds, wallabies & wombats. They‘d come up to the tent looking for food with joeys hanging out their pouches.🦘 1w
erzascarletbookgasm Ooo, 🦘 enjoying the sun! Looks like a lovely place. Hope you‘ll enjoy some quiet time in the night. 1w
Tanisha_A Lovely view! Enjoy! ❤️ And, I want to read this too. 1w
LapReader That looks like a place I stayed at in the Hunter. 1w
batsy Boo to the constant peopling! But yay for this stunning view. Hope it's not too taxing and you get to enjoy 💛 1w
LeeRHarry There‘s so much buzz about this book atm, hope you continue to enjoy it😊 1w
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Cathythoughts I perfectly understand what you‘re saying. I am so like-spirited. I don‘t like peopleing and I‘m not good at it, either. But please, Cathyhoughts, reveal some of ways of credibly excusing yourself, maybe I can use them also. I mean, what can one say: “Excuse me, I need some me-time for reading.” surely is no clever idea, is it❓ 1w
JennyM @TrishB @Cathythoughts it‘s just so much hard work talking to people. Hats off to extroverts! And I seem to have found my groove with Fleishman now. No chapter headings, different narrators and lots of middle-aged man talk about porn threw me! But I‘m enjoying it now 😂 1w
JennyM @Lizpixie @lapreader we‘re at Hope Island on the Goldie and there are kangaroos everywhere!! 1w
JennyM @erzascarletbookgasm thanks Jessie. I‘m snuggled up now fully peopled out! X (edited) 1w
JennyM @Tanisha_A @LeeRHarry thanks lovelies. This one is getting lots of hype - wasn‘t sure at first but I‘m into it now 😘 1w
JennyM @batsy I knew my Litsy peeps would understand! Peopling is hard! 😘 1w
JennyM @Buechersuechtling @Cathythoughts I‘m learning to stay for as long as I can and then excuse myself when I‘ve reached my peopling limit 😂. I‘m usually one of the first to leave but I think people do understand - they know I‘m quiet and there are always a few other introverts who will leave when you do. (edited) 1w
Cathythoughts @Buechersuechtling @JennyM I don‘t have any magic wand excuse ... but there was a time I would have been afraid of drawing attention to myself or of being rude by leaving early .... now I feel stronger in myself & simply say goodnight & thanks! & I don‘t care if I‘m the first to leave anymore. I‘ll only end up wrecked & really stressed if I stay too late 🤷🏼‍♀️hope that‘s helpful ❤️ 1w
Cathythoughts Re the book , I remember the middle aged men & the porn was annoying at the time. But the rest was so good , I kept on going. And I‘d forgotten all about that side of it till you mentioned it there 1w
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Cathythoughts Thanks for reminding me to stand up for my own well being. I think that counts as magic wand. ✨ 1w
Itchyfeetreader This made me laugh. I have just unashamedly run away from a weekend with colleagues in the midst of 2 weeks of peopling and dived into this book! 6d
JennyM @Itchyfeetreader hope you manage to sneak away as often as possible. I was only 3 days away and, man, I‘m so glad to be home!!! Peopling is hard!!😊 (edited) 6d

A marriage breakdown told mostly from Toby‘s POV (in close third person). Many cultural references & witty observations. Thought-provoking re what makes a marriage work (& the pressure points). A little cynical at times, & I found it presented a woman‘s point of view but flipped it to be a man‘s (making Toby the primary carer of the kids for example) - but that itself raises qs of stereotypes. Loved the energy of the prose. Compulsive reading.

Cathythoughts I really liked it ! Compulsive is the word 2w

I really enjoyed listening to this one! At first I was like, WTH, it‘s a ton of kinky sex talk from a middle aged dude. It‘s basically about a doctor in his mid-40‘s going through a divorce. There were quirks that bugged me though.
1. The book is told mostly by Toby, also by Rachel as well as Toby‘s friend from college, making things a bit confusing on audio.
2. The book is 384 pages BUT the AUDIO is 14+ hours! That seems really off to me.

I went from liking it, to being bored, but I ended up coming back around to like not love. I think this book suffered from the hype and high expectations. I didn‘t find much special about it, but it does have some interesting things say about the way perspective can completely change a story. Of course that isn‘t new, but it did make me see it in a different way.

Okay, so I was having trouble figuring out the narrator of the book. Turns out some/all of part one is written from the perspective of his female best friend from study abroad in college whom he hasn‘t seen in 10 years.

Me: 🤨 wut?

Please tell me this strange decision is explained in part 2!!

Bonus: No chapters! 😒

But I‘m actually still enjoying it and feeling better. 😁 I can read a book now. 👍🏻

Megabooks @Cinfhen I think the main reason I can is that my doctor increased my pain meds. That‘s helped. I‘m sleepier, but I‘m not constantly feeling terrible. I think I‘m going to have surgery right in time because I‘m progressing exactly the same way I did before the last two fusions that I needed. It‘s weird that I‘m excited that 🤞🏻 this time next week I‘ll be recovering in the hospital. I‘m just ready to rock n roll!! 3w
Cinfhen I think it‘s great that your attitude is so upbeat and positive!! Is there an address where I can send something while you‘re recovering?? 3w
Megabooks Thank you so much!! 😘🥰😘 I‘ll be back at my parents‘ house in Kentucky by November 9 🤞🏻, which is where you sent Care and Feeding, so that‘s probably the best place to send something. Let me know if you want me to email you the address or if you still have it. 3w

This book is an experience. Amaaaazing character development of nuanced characters and the narrator, once I figured it out, added a whole depth and purpose to the book. Okay, so there‘s not much “plot”, but you don‘t really miss it. A treatise on marriage and feminism and ambition and child rearing.

Yes. More. Need more.

Great book! This explores so many topics - money, ambition, marriage, divorce, gender norms, etc. But ultimately I think this is about women. Despite the title character being male, this book has a lot to say about feminism, the promise of “having it all”, and what marriage and having children does to/for women. The ending seemed to get a little preachy to me, but otherwise this would be a 5⭐️ book. With the ending, 4.5⭐️ #NBAfiction2019

I loved this ! The main characters - complicated , flawed , real. Set in the privileged big city modern life ... smart writing. An exploration of anxieties, of self doubt, of relationships... of divorce & the fallout for children.
That‘s a pic of the author above too. I listened to an interview with her & found her engaging & insightful & so likable. She says everyone deserves a defence for their behavior .. I agree. She explores the ‘why‘ 5🌟

I‘m almost halfway through and not getting all the love for this one. It‘s disjointed in a way that doesn‘t really work, it‘s written in way that comes across to me as self conscious and not as clever as it thinks it is. Many readers I respect loved it but I‘m close to making this a DNF.

Ruthiella Oh no! I‘ve not read it yet but I have been excited about getting to it. 😮 2mo
Lola @Ruthiella I‘m reading it for a book club that I likely won‘t be able to attend so I thought about skipping it, but decided to go in after it made the National Book Award longlist. It feels gimmicky to me. Even the fact that it‘s on the longlist feels gimmicky (no MW authors on the list but a book *about* a MW (and set in NYC, no less) feels like a staged attempt at irony that I‘m not buying. (edited) 2mo

Lola @Cathythoughts I love real, flawed characters. And I like the story. I just don‘t like the way it‘s being told (just started part two). It feels like the author is trying too hard to be clever and different and for me, at least at this point, she isn‘t pulling it off. 2mo

Cathythoughts Great review ! & I‘m ready for something new & different .... I‘m getting it 👍🏻 @Ruthiella just what you said , only my struggle was brief - I have now on kindle 😁 (edited) 2mo
batsy Well, you and @Lindy both giving good reviews to this so I'm sold! 2mo

Hoopiefoot I loved it too! I didn‘t make the connection between it and Normal People but that totally makes sense 2mo
AmyG I also enjoyed this. And YES.....very white & privileged- ha! But very “today” from the kids to the adults. (edited) 2mo
merelybookish @Ruthiella Go for it! 😄 Those other books will wait! 2mo
merelybookish @Cathythoughts Oh good! I am eager to hear what you think!! 2mo
merelybookish @batsy It definitely re-confirms the glories of spinsterhood! 😉 2mo
merelybookish @Hoopiefoot They are both great books about relationships but at very different stages of life! 2mo
merelybookish @AmyG Yeah they all inhabit a pretty rarified world! Nevertheless many of the issues still resonated! 2mo
cathipink I loved this book - glad it's on the NBA long list 🙂 lots of well-observed moments. 2mo
merelybookish @cathipink Yes, indeed! And the way it is structured is so smart and sky! 2mo
Suet624 The flip side of Normal People? Interesting! That was one of my favorite books this year as well. My daughter is sending me her copy of this one and I can‘t wait to start. 2mo
merelybookish @Suet624 Maybe Normal People: The Later Years would be more accurate. But very relationship focused! I think you'll like it! 2mo

While it took a while for me to sort out who exactly was voicing this novel & I was also slow catching on to the POV switches, I immediately engaged with the characters. I was reminded at first of Perotta‘s Mrs. Fletcher, then even more strongly of Groff‘s Fates & Furies. Society‘s constraints against being our true selves is made poignant in this novel about marriage & other relationships in middle age life. #Audiobook read by Allyson Ryan.

Blaire Great review. I‘ve been eyeing this one. 2mo

On to a new audiobook, still playing with natural dyes. #audiodyeing

kathedron Hope we get to see the "after" pic too! 2mo
Lindy @kathedron I will tag you. The new dye (made from motherwort leaves) isn‘t very impressive, so I‘m still experimenting. 2mo

Loved it. So many sharp, witty, yet empathetic thoughts about marriage. This is one I‘ll keep on my shelf to revisit down the road.

Mehso-so

Definitely a different kind of book. Not something I would've normally picked up for myself but it was the only o e of the Jimmy Fallon 2019 Summer Reads I hadn't yet read so I figured I would give it a go. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. Just left me feeling kind of, meh.

Someone doesn't understand personal space. He keeps sticking his butt in my face while I am trying to read. His tail was also wagging so there are times when I actually can't see. Definitely makes trying to finish my book hard.

Just finished this book earlier today before work and I just need to say...it's a freaking masterpiece. Seriously. A brilliant, insightful, and humorous take on relationships, how perspectives differ, marriage, divorce, ambition, parenthood, and gender. I felt seen during so many parts of this story. I will be thinking about it for a long, long time. Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Leftcoastzen Wow, I have been curious about it this one , your great review means I must check it out! 3mo
marleed I have this on hold at the lib. #20 on 7 copies w/ an estimated 6 week wait. But I usually get it sooner. It seems patrons are good at early e-lib check in‘s of popular books. 3mo
Branwen @Leftcoastzen Awwww, thank you! You just made my night! I really hope you like it as much as I did! 💕📚 @marleed That seems to be the case a lot of times at my library too! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it comes in fast! 🤞 3mo

Starting this one tonight and I feel it may take some getting used to. Are there actually any chapters? It is going to make finding a good place to stop for the night difficult.

Taffy Brodesser-Akner's Fleishman Is in Trouble (thanks, Sara, for the loan!) is a thought-provoking, challenging, slippery book. Just a warning: to discuss this book, I'm going to talk about its whole arc. Also, sorry to do this, but I wrote a looong review over on Instagram (@ Jen.loves.books), so—one time only—visit me there for my full discussion. Overall, I recommend this one!! 📚

This was an enjoyable story, it will tear at the heartstrings at times, make you laugh, and everything in between. Believe all they hype that you have heard on this one. Akner is such a good writer, and I can't wait to read what else she writes.

Maybe unpopular opinion but I thoroughly DISliked this book, like as much as I disliked Where‘d you go Bernadette. I can‘t say why without spoilers, but yeah, wow. Had to read it for an IRL book club, so perhaps some of the other gals in the club will shed light on why they liked it. 😤

LiteraryinLititz Bummer! 3mo
DivineDiana I do often find that after Book Club discussion, I tend to increase my enjoyment of a book, even one that did not thrill me! 😉 3mo
8little_paws Oohh oh no!!! I hated Bernadette. Maybe this book isn't for me. 3mo
BennettBookworm @DivineDiana you‘re totally right, it helped to talk about it- I think the difference is that I only like books where I can like or admire the characters, and my friends judge the books more on whether they think it‘s good writing or not. Different strokes! 3mo
DivineDiana I also want likable/admirable characters! 🙂 3mo
