Mehso-so

A man is condemned to relive the same day over and over again in a succession of different bodies - if he hasn‘t managed to solve the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle by the end of his eighth host his memories are wiped and he must start the process again. I‘d heard really good things about this, and I thought I‘d like it a lot. Actually, I found it disappointing. I did want to find out what was going on, and that kept me reading, but not a great read.

This one was a little strange. An allegory of a slice of British history told through the story of various settlers in tents on a very large field ... I‘m not 100% sure what it was all about, but I did enjoy it.

The best book I‘ve read all year. Now that I‘ve finished it (on audio) I‘m very tempted to get a paper copy and read it all again. Ireland as you‘ve never seen it before ...

charl08 Irish dystopia? I'm in! 6y

Started to listen to this on audio, and nearly gave up after 10 minutes as the language was so difficult - Irish dialect combined with quite a few phrases that I suspect haven‘t been invented yet. But now I‘ve got my ear in I‘m loving it ...

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover

Back to work today, so this is my new Audible listen for the drive to work.

BkClubCare Oh, great cover. 6y
SandDune I'm alternating between wanting to scream at the parents in this book, (something along the lines of "Are you completely out of your tiny minds?") and thinking Tara Westover's family life is all just to awful to be true. It's certainly very gripping. 6y

The Betrayal | Helen Dunmore

Pickpick

Didn‘t enjoy The Betrayal as much as The Siege, but still a good read. It didn‘t handle being a sequel as well as it could have done, and rather too much explanation of what had happened in the previous book. I‘d have liked more focus on the story of The Betrayal, rather than constant looking back to the previous book.

I loved this story of Anna‘s attempts to keep her family alive during the siege of Leningrad. It‘s a beautifully written but sometimes harrowing account of the ravages of starvation, and the bitter cold of the Russian winter ...

‘Library books, have not, however, stuck in my mind. I think I - possibly unwittingly, nudged by Dad - must have used them as ‘filler‘. The ones he bought me, the ones I was able to keep and read and reread ( and reread and reread and reread and ...) were the ones I loved.‘

SandDune I‘ve been compiling a list of my childhood books as I‘m reading this book and that‘s exactly what I find. Books I owned (at least after a certain age) I can remember without too much difficulty. But library books are impossible... 6y

I've just discovered that the BBC adaptation of China Mieville's The City and the City is on this week. This is one of my favourite books of all time so I hope they have done a good job.

Our combined holiday reading shelf in our cottage in Pembrokeshire. Next up: Bookworm by Lucy Mangan.

charl08 Great shelf! Have a lovely break. 6y
SandDune @charl08 Mine are Testosterone Rex, Frankenstein in Baghdad, The Betrayal, and Lily and the Octopus. Oh, and Bookworm by Lily Mangan. 6y
arubabookwoman Lots of good books there. I started Frankenstein in Baghdad, but had to return it to the library, so I‘m interested to see what you think of it. Have a great holiday! 6y
Smrloomis @arubabookwoman @SandDune Yes to Frankenstein in Baghdad! 😄 It‘s one of my recent favorites. 6y

The Siege | Helen Dunmore
post image

“Anna pictured the seeds beginning to stir. Plump nubs of green feeling their way up through the earth, unfolding, fattening, changing hydrogen and oxygen and all the rest of it into solid, succulent food.”

SandDune The way that Helen Dunmore describes food in The Siege is almost sensual: from growing vegetables, to eating, to the long hours spent queuing while there is still food in the shops. Everything is leading up to the almost total lack of food in the second half of the book when Leningrad is besieged. 6y

Helen Dunmore‘s The Betrayal is my next RL book club choice, so being a completist I have to read The Siege first.
(I‘m new to Litsy so hope I‘m doing this right)!

arubabookwoman Hi Sanddune—I just read Dunmore‘s Exposure, which I heard about on LT. I liked it enough to want to read more by her, so I will be interested to see what you think of these two books. 6y
MayJasper Hello and welcome to Litsy 😊 6y
Tamra I‘m reading The Siege now. 😁 What did you think of the General Hunger & General Winter conversation? 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Welcome to Litsy 🖐🌞 6y
SandDune @Tamra I wondered if the General Hunger and General Winter was a Russian folktale or was it invented by Helen Dunmore? Either way, it‘s a pretty chilling story to be telling your young daughter... 6y
