The Priory of the Orange Tree
The Priory of the Orange Tree | Samantha Shannon
From the internationally bestselling author of The Bone Season, a trailblazing, epic high fantasy about a world on the brink of war with dragons--and the women who must lead the fight to save it. A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens. The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction--but assassins are getting closer to her door. Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic. Across the dark sea, Tan has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel. Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

I haven‘t been the best about keeping up with #bfcr4 updates, but I‘ve been good about cheering on my #runningonreading team!

Fitness/Health:
I‘ve kept up with my personal training 2x a week & I feel pretty good— I leg pressed 140lbs on Thursday! Got this sweet water bottle at the Sleater-Kinney show last Friday! Mom snail-mailed me an article about thyroids so I did some light reading, too.

Books:
I FINALLY FINISHED PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE!!

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 sounds like you had a good 6-weeks 5d
Caterina Amazing!!! Congrats on finishing that tome! And I love the water bottle 😍 5d
BarbaraJean Great job on all of this!! Especially Priory of the Orange Tree—that is no small feat!! Congratulations on a great challenge—so glad to have been on a team with you! 4d

So I‘m 200 pages in and thinking of bailing. The characters are a bit flat in my opinion. I cant really feel them and the dragon action is super lame. Her style of writing has no beauty or wit whatsoever. I am so disappointed. Is anybody feeling the same?

*Heavy sigh* I think I feel a little disappointed, a little ripped off.

There were some great characters here, but those great characters were pushed aside in favor of two relatively dull characters. Characters I‘ve read before over and over again. For a story that opens with such promise, I‘m disappointed with the delivery. I wish the story had focused more on Tané & Nayimathun & the land of Seiiki. Or even The Priory!

??

hermyknee The Priory is a great setting filled with intriguing characters. The book is called The Priory of the Orange Tree after all—but an over abundance of time is spent setting up and developing characters in Inys leaving the great characters and storylines in the south and the east underdeveloped. For its length, the book had a hard time focusing. By the time epilogues for each character/storyline rolled around, I skipped all but one. 😕 (edited) 1w
Soubhiville I agree. I was pretty disappointed in this book. 1w
hermyknee @Soubhiville I‘m glad I‘m not the only one - I feel like ours is a fairly #unpopularopinion 1w

“...one day, you will forgive yourself. You are in the spring of your life, child, and have much to learn about this world. Do not deny yourself the privilege of living.”

I freakin‘ love Tané and I‘m so annoyed that she is in so little of the novel! I hope I get to stay with her for the last 22% of this book because I‘ll tell you what I could give zero f***ks about Sabran and Ead ???

TANÉ AND NAYIMATHUN 4EVR!!!!

sudi I felt the same way, i tried to like Ead but i loved Tane's character more. 1w

Bklover Not enjoying this one? I was thinking of starting it next but it‘s a BIG one so maybe shelve it for a while????? 2w
hermyknee @Bklover for a book with dragons on the cover, there has been very little dragon action. And she spends most of the time on characters that hate dragons. And the prologue or whatever starts out so cool and promising with my favorite character and dragons and blood and plague, and then I get squat for the next 70% of the book. 😑 2w
Bklover Maybe I‘ll feat this one for a bit. Thanks!! 2w

Slow progress is still progress, right? I don‘t know why this book is taking me so long— oh wait! Yes I do! It‘s super effing long. Don‘t get me wrong, I‘m enjoying it, but I generally don‘t get too far each evening before my eyes droop and I find I‘ve fallen asleep on myself 😋

Maybe I‘ll be able to make a dent joining #LitsyPartyofOne this weekend?! I won‘t be able to jump in until Saturday evening, but I‘m looking forward to it anyway!

ChasingOm I bought this in hardback because it‘s beautiful, but I‘m thinking about checking out the electronic version from the library to actually read. 🤣 2w
Kimberlone I‘ve gotten stuck at 12% on this and j started during the summer 🤦🏻‍♀️ I am hoping I can get back into it and finish during my upcoming vacation. This might end up being a perfect airplane read! 2w
Bookzombie It is still progress! You will get it done. 🙂 2w
sudi The first half does tend to drag but there is more action during the second half. 2w
hermyknee @ChasingOm @Kimberlone @sudi I started it in August! Now that I‘m at 70%, I‘m determined not to read another book until I finish this one. But I‘ll read for a good 30 minutes and only make 1% progress - I guess that‘s the hardest part, I can‘t actually see the progress I‘m making because I don‘t have the physical book. There are pros and cons to reading on kindle, for sure. 2w

I never buy books based on their cover but this one just caught me off guard with such a gorgeous cover, I just HAD to buy it. But don't worry, it's more than just a pretty face, it has a solid story inside. This book is a staple for every fantasy lover, just don't believe the reviews that claim it's the successor to GoT because it's NOT. It's nowhere near as complex as ASOIAF but other than that it holds its own pretty well. My rating 4/5.

I am determined to finish this #chunkster before starting anything new. I‘m at the 70% mark, so it shouldn‘t be too long now! It‘s quite good... just long. And some bits are more interesting than others as is per usual with these great big books & multiple storylines.

This sadly did not live up to my high expectations. I was sure I was going to love it: monstrous, complex fantasy world, dragons, strong female characters. But, it was overly long. Lots of little subplots that seem unfinished, and when we finally get to the main plot line, it felt anti-climatic. With one or two exceptions, i didn‘t feel a connection with any of the characters. It was a slog to get through. Cool concepts, poor execution.

hermyknee I‘m reading this now and the only two characters I think are great and I‘m interested in are Tane and Niclays and she spends NO. TIME. WITH. THEM. I‘m determined to finish it because I‘m at 75%, but I feel much the way you did. 2w

I‘ve been a fan girl of Shannon since reading her debut novel (The Bone Season) and this book has cemented her as one of my favorite authors.

She has a talent for building rich, detailed worlds with characters I can relate to, cheer for, and fall in love with. By the end, I was completely enthralled and trying to savor every page. I‘m not sure how to describe it in 451 characters, but I loved it and it‘s well worth the daunting page count. ❤️🐉🍊

MeganAnn Also, ❤️ Dragons!!! 🐉 This artwork in the front is beautiful and holds much more meaning once you‘ve finished the book than it appears at first glance. 1mo

A nasty cold + busy schedules keep getting in the way of bookish things. But, I‘m off work this week and finally feeling better so I‘m taking time to reorganize my bookshelves to make it easier to find what I want. They were overflowing with stacks piled in front of other stacks and nothing in order.

We did Axton‘s room and the other side of this room Monday so this is what I have left. Somehow all these books have to fit on this shelf...🤞🏻😬📚

MeganAnn Also I‘ve been slowly making my way through the tagged tome in between all the other busyness. So good!! 2mo

This might be an #unpopularopinion but I DNF‘d The Priory of the Orange Tree. I got 40% of the way through the 900+ page book and still had no idea what the titular organization even was. Plus I really didn‘t have much connection to the main characters. Life is too short to stick with a book I don‘t enjoy, so I bailed.

This was wonderful! Fascinating world-building, strong female characters, palace intrigue, and DRAGONS. I did feel like the final battle wrapped things up a little too quickly, and I wish the author had been a bit braver in demanding a higher cost from her characters (though I guess a lot of that came earlier on in the book). But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this and want to read more—both from this author as well as in this world she‘s created.

saresmoore I‘m still in the beginning-ish and I am feeling the costs to her characters! I‘m really enjoying the book, though. I love how many typically male roles are filled by multi-faceted, powerful, and unexpected females. There are some really nuanced male characters, too. 2mo
BarbaraJean @saresmoore Yeah, there are some heart wrenching losses in the first half or so!! And I was so impressed by both the depth of her characters as well as the handling of gender roles—as in, for the most part, there weren‘t prescribed/expected gender-based roles. 2mo
saresmoore Yes! So many times, I expect to read “he” after a character intro and I‘m surprised by a “she”—it‘s refreshing. 2mo

I just finished and have all sorts of mixed feelings. I cannot believe I read an 800+ page book and literally felt nothing for any of the characters. Literally not a feel in sight, I used binoculars and found no. one.
The book was an easy read though and I appreciate that it is a stand alone, I wish more authors would do this for those of us who struggle with series.
The world building was impressive too.
Just literally no connection.
