The Priory of the Orange Tree
The Priory of the Orange Tree | Samantha Shannon
From the internationally bestselling author of The Bone Season, a trailblazing, epic high fantasy about a world on the brink of war with dragons--and the women who must lead the fight to save it. A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens. The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction--but assassins are getting closer to her door. Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic. Across the dark sea, Tan has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel. Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

I figured I'm not going to make my reading goal of 100 books this year anyway, so I might as well start this absolutely enormous fantasy tome that I've owned for 3 years and have heard such good things about.

I was in the mood for some fantasy, so this is my new #audiowalk book, but I‘m going to do it a little differently. I have the print version as well, so I‘ll read that at home sometimes. I went swimming today for the first time in over a year and was able to swim 1800 yds without a problem. Yay, me! 😊

850 ish pages, 4 corners of the world, many characters, complicated world building, magic dragons & forbidden same sex relationships; this is not a light fantasy read. I got a little bored and tangled up in the MANY subplots. The story is about secrets, discrimination, gods and fighting a common enemy ultimately breaking the barriers of "race" as they painfully break tradition to create a new world.

I've noticed this book tends to put people on the love it or hate it ends of the spectrum, and I fell firmly on the love it end of things. The characters and the bits of mystery surrounding each of their circumstances kept me reading with rapt attention. I can see how it might not be for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it!

I really tried, reached two thirds...but it is just extremely boring. I kept waiting in vain for something to happen to catch my attention, for some interesting feelings to be triggered...

It just felt like reading about a mix of elements from a lot of other novels and fairytales put together in a terribly long and distasteful porridge.

TheSpineView I tried reading this too. I only made it about 10% and I couldn't force myself to finish. 2y
IuliaC @TheSpineView I perfectly see why. Glad I'm not the only one 😊 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures I was able to finish this I think because I took it to a beach vacation and had nothing but time. But I agree, it felt like she threw all the elements together but didn't create something interesting or cohesive. 2y

After hearing wonderful things from my reading friends at work I‘ve been working on this chunkster mini all year. I‘m sad to say I just thought it was okay. I really enjoyed this!

What I loved: The incredible world building, the strong & diverse female characters, the challenging of beliefs, Nayimathun (dragon), & the bit of closure given for key characters at the end.

Didn't love: The slow start. That some conflicts were too easily resolved, and a few characters too conveniently showed up in the right place at the right time despite their prior circumstances. Some predictability.

steph_phanie The world building was so good and so extensive that when I fell asleep each night, my dreams were all set within the world of Priory. I miss that! 2y

After I finished the Moor's Account on Friday, I spent the rest of my weekend with this gorgeous book. Not wanting to review it quite yet. Still savoring. Also in a bit of denial that it has ended.

I estimated it would take between 18 and 20 hours to read, factoring in the number of times I would have to reference the character index or maps, but I finished at 17.5 hours!

Then I ordered the prequel.

TrishB You‘ll be fine- you have the prequel- I‘ve just finished that. 2y
steph_phanie @TrishB How was it? 2y
TrishB Loved it 👍🏻 a bit of a slower build than Priory- but because you already know the world it‘s fine. Great characters. 2y

This book is massive! It is a commitment to read it. The world building is phenomenal. The characters are engaging and I found myself rooting for all of them. I have to say I wasn't sure about this book. In the end, I loved it! The only thing I can complain about is,there were too many points of view. It was hard keeping up. I am looking forward to reading the prequel. Read this book!

I ADORED priory, so it gets an automatic 5 stars from me.

Much less gritty than the worlds of Robin Hobb & GRRM, we are nonetheless plunged into a fully formed, colourful fantasy world.

There's a fair bit of infodumping at the start & several political obstacles work themselves out a bit too conveniently, but I'm rating this one with my heart.

Fierce, feminist, bad-ass, diverse, vivid characters... this is a fantasy must-read 💕

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ruthiella Sounds great! There‘s also no rule, requiring fantasy novels to be gritty! In fact, it‘s a bit of relief. 😅 2y

RaeLovesToRead @batsy 100% 😁 I do love fantasy though... especially epic, character-driven fantasy! I took my time with this one, and it really was excellent. I loved all the characters and hooe to read more stories set in this world. My only complaint is that after almost 800 pages of build up, the major battle scene felt sort of anti-climactic. I can forgive that because everything else was pretty much perfection

Boy, do I have feelings about this book that can‘t be expressed in so few words... Suffice to say, it took me a round year to read it, and I both loved and hated it. (Mostly hated it, though.)

1k-pages-long behemoth that is ridiculously slow to start. One-third in—that‘s 350 pages!—and we‘re still at the inciting incident... Plus, every time you get comfortable in a setting, the POV switches, so you can forget all about it.

eol (My memory is not that fragile! Damn you, book, I could handle the Wheel of Time. Why can‘t I handle you?!)

Still, the worldbuilding is good, the plot interesting, and the characters grow on you.

(Eventually)

So.

Overhyped.

Standalone fantasy books are nice—I‘ll be the first one to scream that at the publishing heavens—except when they should‘ve been a trilogy.

3.0/5

If you can be patient for the first 200-ish pages, it really takes off once all the players are established and the threads start coming together. A modern take on traditional high fantasy with female characters that are written like someone's actually met one. I enjoyed the ride and appreciated this was a self-contained story with closure at the end.

This intimidating chunkster has languished on my Audible and Kindle shelves forever. Finally picked it up at the end of 2022 and spent about a month listening / reading the ebook.
